August 20, 20186 yr This video is 3 years old but my God do they make great points re: stadiums and arenas.
August 20, 20186 yr Browns Stadium is situated in a place to provide ground-level retail/restaurant spaces for the Lakefront of the development ever takes off. Probably wouldn't be too tough to reverse-engineer on the outside of the venue, just like the Q is doing now.

Probably wouldn't be too tough to reverse-engineer on the outside of the venue, just like the Q is doing now. I had a meeting once with the browns at the stadium. And we step outside and this lady walked up and she’s like “is there a restaurant here?” The people working there say there’s nothing open at the stadium now. This was out of season, no preseason, nothing. And she said “oh ok. At [whatever city she’s from, I don’t remember at the moment] they have a restaurant at our stadium that’s open all the time, even when the team isn’t playing.” I’m like wow why don’t we have that? We don’t have to move mountains, we could do more even with what we have

It would make sense to make that entire south side of the stadium retail/restaurant year round so the Rock Hall and Science Center don't seem like they are completely on an island by themselves.
August 21, 20186 yr Renovating the Q is a simple case of having to keep up with the Joneses, I'm afraid. A 25-year old arena doesn't *seem* old, but Buffalo, Columbus, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Detroit have all built brand new NBA/NHL-sized arenas since the Q opened in 1994. Those cities are our direct competitors for the big name concerts and other events mentioned above. Fun fact: after this season, the Cavaliers will have played more seasons in the Q (1994-2019) than the Cleveland Arena and Richfield Coliseum (1970-1994) combined. It still somehow feels like Gateway opened yesterday, though. I wouldn't say we have brand new arenas in Columbus. Nationwide Arena opened in 2000 and Value City Arena opened in 1998. They aren't much younger than the Q. Nationwide will probably be due for some upgrades in the near future. They just upgraded the video screen a couple seasons back. Value City Arena will probably be able to last longer without upgrades because it is a college arena. Also, Buffalo's arena opened in 1996 and Indy's arena opened in 1999. The only cities from that list with truly new arenas are Pittsburgh (2010) and Detroit (2017).
September 18, 20186 yr Gilbert to add an additional 45 million towards renovations. https://www.wkyc.com/article/sports/nba/cavaliers/cleveland-cavaliers-owner-dan-gilbert-provides-additional-45-million-for-q-transformation/95-595825426
September 18, 20186 yr Cleveland Cavaliers to spend $45 million more on Q upgrades The Cleveland Cavaliers will spend an extra $45 million for additional upgrades at Quicken Loans Arena, bringing the total price of the Q transformation project to $185 million. The Cavs announced the injection of money and the additional improvements it will fund on Tuesday. The Cavs total contribution will be $115 million by the time the transformation is expected to be complete in October 2019. Public funding will remain at $70 million, which will come from taxes on tickets for arena events and rooms at Cuyahoga County hotels. The Cavs previously committed to covering any cost overruns from the project. MORE: https://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/09/cleveland_cavaliers_to_spend_4.html

September 19, 20186 yr Just revisited some pics. Pretty slick looking renders. Will be interesting to see how it turns out in real life.

September 19, 20186 yr Foxboro Stadium (Patriot Place) is a great example of that. Because it, like the Buffalo Bills stadium, is in the middle of nowhere. It's pathetic how disconnected FES is from everything, despite being on a downtown waterfront. That Mike White. Such a visionary. September 20, 20186 yr Is Cleveland Scene even aware of how obtuse they sound? https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2018/09/18/dan-gilbert-claims-to-be-spending-an-additional-45-million-in-q-arena-upgrades Honestly, I get that Dan Gilbert is not a sympathetic protagonist here... but the dude could donate $50 million to a pediatric surgery center and the Scene would write about how a nurse stubbed her toe on an improperly installed DaVinci machine.
September 20, 20186 yr Could not agree more. You can say what you want about Gilbert but one thing he is not is cheap. • The renovated Ritz Carleton is extremely well. • He immediately ripped out those ugly powder blue seats and upgraded the score board and sound system at the Q as soon as he took over the team. • While he did not follow through on phase 2 casino, I'm convinced Higbee and May Company would be sill be waiting on local investors to somehow obtain financial funding to renovate. • I believe the renovation of the Higbee Building as a casino is well done for what it is. • The guy created a downtown Quicken Loans call center which is beautifully done andnow employs about 600 people downtown. • I have not even mentioned his investment to build a team to win a championship. • With the exception of casino phase 2, what has he not delivered on at a high level? • Why all the hate for Gilbert in Cleveland?
September 20, 20186 yr ^ agreed, but now subtract the $200Mish+ per year, or $1.5B total, he has grossed from the casino since it opened. i dk how much he takes away out of that, but it looks like whatever it is it all goes right to rebuilding downtown detroit. maybe the low rung call center jobs make it a wash? i dk.
September 20, 20186 yr It is interesting that people that are rich are not suppose to make more money. Remember, Gilbert is the one taking the risk. He is doing things in Cleveland that locals cant's afford to get financed. My sense is that Columbus would love to have Dan Gilbert investing there. How may tries to renovate May Company before Gilbert or look at Stark and NuCLEus. Do you actually think NuCLEus will ever be built? Gilbert knows how to get things done as most big city developers with money.

We should be happy to have him and sending ideas his way. You never know--he just may latch onto one.

Gilbert knows how to get things done as most big city developers with money. i dont think anyone is arguing that gilbert isn't doing anything in cleveland or not taking risks, the only issue is to what benefit for cleveland. if he pays local call center employees, then takes $1.5B local people's money away in the casino over the years, the city may or may not be benefiting overall. that seems to be close enough with the give and take there to be a wash. however, the excitement and crowds downtown of the lebron years probably put it way up in the positive side, and he did take a bath twice now when lebron left re the value of the cavs dropping, so those are big factors. so i am going to side with gilbert doing well for cleveland overall. its just a shame he is a carpetbagger because we see he is doing so much investment back home in downtown detroit --- maybe if phase II of the casino isnt going to happen at least throw cle a new apt or office building bone, danny buddy!

I didn’t know that Dan Gilbert’s people were standing outside with guns making people go to the casino. “Taking local people’s money away?” Please. You have a choice to go or not go to the casino. And then if you do choose to go, you have a choice of how much you spend or not spend while you’re there. The casino is an entertainment option just like anything else. Nobody is “taking” your money if you choose to go there voluntarily. Stop it

Not keeping it here and investing it in Cleveland??
September 20, 20186 yr There definitely is a lot of construction happening in Detroit. I was up there this past weekend for a few days and I was surprised by the amount of building / renovation that is happening. And a lot of the projects did have Gilberts Bedrock signs on them. Knowing about the construction in Cleveland (and thinking that we have a decent amount in process here) I was really surprised by what was happening in Detroit.
September 20, 20186 yr We are drifting from the topic of this thread. There is a Dan Gilbert thread if we want to continue this conversation
September 20, 20186 yr How do you pull the Dan Gilbert thread to the front then? If there is good conversation on a topic, let's keep it going. That's what makes this forum interesting.

September 21, 20186 yr It seems to me that a big goal if this was to grow the space for pre and post function event space. How many larger conventions or group meetings have used the Q in the past only to have breakout meetings and other smaller functions back at the convention center?

How many larger conventions or group meetings have used the Q in the past only to have breakout meetings and other smaller functions back at the convention center? I'd say just one: The RNC. The goal of this is to get more fans spending money in the arena restaurants rather than in the restaurants out on E 4th, etc.
September 21, 20186 yr My biggest gripe is I wish that they would have updated Gateway Plaza. It still looks outdated and a revamp could've really livened that space.
September 21, 20186 yr My biggest gripe was the price tag but if it saves Cleveland from building a new arena which I feel it does is a good thing and and saves money in long run. Keep the house and do a paint job why not?

December 5, 20186 yr I saw some big crates out next to the Q a couple of days ago and thought it might be some of the new glass ... And I was right. This morning I saw them installing the first pieces of the glass!!! It's looking good!!!

January 11, 20196 yr The curved steel on the corner of Ontario and Huron is pretty cool too, I'll try and get a pic of that next time I walk that way. It's impressive how fast they've been moving installing the glass!
January 11, 20196 yr Aren't they're going to shut the Q down again this summer with the plan to have things finished up by the start of next NBA season??
