Agreed with both. That's what drives me crazy about him - he is a gifted writer and gets some incredible intel for his stories. However, his arguments get lost in clearly personal feuds he maintains with some of the people he writes about. I think if he approached writing in a more objective way, he could still body slam folks from time to time, but would do so in a way that was less clouded by vitriol and thereby be of greater service to Scene's readers. He's a good enough writer to do it.

I think he tries too hard to be edgy and controversial (and maybe funny), which would all be taken care of by just trying to be more objective.

His writing style is not bad per se, but the way in which he utilizes it runs old quick. I rarely read anything he writes anymore unless by accident.

August 19, 20195 yr They have been installing the led lighting in the north atrium and testing it at night. The glass is very reflective and it is difficult to see the curtain wall panels.

I could be wrong, but I assumed that the interior panels are lit in some way to make them pop- at least that's what I got from the renderings.

August 21, 20195 yr What are those room on the right side that are so exposed? How exposed they are look awful at night and nothing like the renderings.

I still have hope, the photo on the right wasn't a 1-1 comparison, I'll try and walk by one of these days and see how that's been coming along. I know they've still been working on the interior bigtime, so hopefully it isn't a 'done deal' granted, the grand opening is like Sept. 30?

August 24, 20195 yr I think they should keep the cleveland skyline silhouette on the floor. They had it on the court a few years back and it was just really cool to see. Probably one of the most original courts.
August 29, 20195 yr Good! Now that this is finished, we can now take new accruing sin tax and upgrade the club sections at Jacob's Field which I'm never able to afford and will probably never use...
August 29, 20195 yr I saw huge video boards being moved on lifts outside of the arena this morning. Anyone know if these would be headed inside or if they're being affixed to the exterior walls?
August 30, 20195 yr I'm sure it's been mentioned a million times already, but the "Discount Drug Mart" signage right over a doorway is extremely weird and really does make it look like there's a drug store built into this thing (which would be great, tbh). Is this just sponsorship of a specific entry?
August 30, 20195 yr ^oh man. I was just looking at the photos and was happy to see the street-level retail (Discount Drug Mart)--only to learn its not real. That's very disappointing and misleading. Imagine if you saw that from a distance, needed a store, and walk over to it in the freezing cold, or hot sun, or rain---only to find its the name of the doorway or whatever. Pretty strange/bad design.

August 31, 20195 yr That must be a recent change. I could swear last I heard that the Canal Road plant was closed and going to be demolished. I'm actually happy to hear it is still in operation, and was hoping that even if it closed they would find some way to preserve the smokestack.
August 31, 20195 yr What's interesting is they only offer tours of the Hamilton plant so maybe there is something to the reports that the Canal Road site has closed. Of course none of this has anything to do with the topic! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I was trying to remember this same thing a few weeks ago and dug up this 2015 Cleveland.com article. When Cleveland Thermal was about to change hands, the new owners said they planned to shut down the Canal road plant: https://www.cleveland.com/business/2015/08/canadians_buy_cleveland_therma.html

So we’re gonna just sit here and pretend that GSW doesn’t play in the 8th largest media market and the Cavs play in the 19th? We’re gonna sit here and pretend like the economics are the same in both markets? Oh and let’s pretend that the Cavaliers own their arena just like GSW does. I guess it’s just easier to talk about DG “extorting” the city by only putting up half of the money to fix an arena that he doesn’t even own, while GSW pays the full cost for an arena that they fully own, in a market that’s the 8th largest while we’re in market 19. But that context would hurt that false narrative, so sure let’s continue with the “extortion” talk Edited September 3, 20195 yr by inlovewithCLE

Yowza The Oracle Arena looked great but the location in Oakland within a sea of surface lots was terrible, especially for a championship caliber team. Reminds me of the old Coliseum in Richfield. Back then people lived in the burbs so it was no big deal. Now It really enhances the downtown living experience, and thus the real estate values, when you can just walk to the arena rather than drive in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour. Does anyone now how many cities besides Cleveland has three major league venues within walking distance of each other?
