So we’re gonna just sit here and pretend that GSW doesn’t play in the 8th largest media market and the Cavs play in the 19th? We’re gonna sit here and pretend like the economics are the same in both m

I will say this....im not a fan of government helping out private enterprise in construction of stadiums, etc.  Private Enterprise in a capitalistic environment should be investing on their own and sinking and swimming on their own. However separating the two topics, the new arena really is impressive.  I went to Elton John the other night, the entire glass facade was illuminating in stunning rainbow colors, with a giant screen inside the facade indicating tonights event.  It was really sharp looking for the street.  The interior looks good as well.  I will be spending many nights at the new look facility in the coming years...it does do Cleveland very proud.

We went to Elton John the other night as well, and my impressions on the renovation were mixed. We tried to enter from the Tower City tunnel, and there was a massive backup of people waiting to get in (or even to the screening area / metal detectors). Didn't matter whether you went up the escalator or the stairs, there was a long wait. Someone at the bottom of the escalators was losing their cool and began yelling about the length of the line.

One guard suggested quietly to us that we could go outside in the rain and walk "20 seconds down" and back in the next entrance for a shorter line. We did so, not a big deal — and once there, another security person said, "if you walk another 20 seconds around the corner, and there's an even shorter line." Again, we did so, and there, we waited maybe 2 minutes to get in. Not a big deal. But I thought the whole concept of the renovation was a better entrance experience. This was hardly that!

Once inside, the ebbing and flowing metal panels looked cool and I was impressed. Less so with the funky splotchy paint job on the up escalators (the orange/black/teal on yellow) ... I think that will age very poorly ... if it hasn't already. And the upper level concourses didn't appear any different to me, other than maybe a fresh coat of paint. (Although I don't know that anything could have really been done to them from a structural standpoint.)

Anyway, my overall reaction was a bit meh. It's nice, but I don't think it's $193 million nice. More like $25 million nice, lol.

^ I agree regarding interior. You kind of have to look hard for the changes. Maybe more space in concourses and public art is neat but you have to look for it.  I felt the biggest improvement was the street presence

I'll echo Paul in Cleveland. I also went to the Elton John concert and the entry from the RTA walkway from Tower City was completely backed up with hundreds of people just standing there. We waited almost 30 minutes to get to the top of the stairs. They were letting small groups in at a time through a single security gate and when we finally got up to the top of the stairs...a security guard said we could go outside and walk the 20 seconds to the other entrance where the entry was a breeze. Why were they not forcing people to do this to get people moving? Literally hundreds of people were just standing in the tunnel blocked and with no clue what was going on because there was no communication until you got to the top of the stairs. I was very disappointed to see that the renovation did not have better access from our public transit hub downtown. I hope they somehow can fix this...because it was a mess. Another black eye for public transit in Cleveland.

Other than that, the renovation itself was quite beautiful! ?‍♂️

If you haven't noticed they have removed the RMFH signage on the West and South side of the building. When that first went up I had never seen letters attached in the way they did it. It looked really bad. Alot of extra framing that was left exposed. So I saw a building permit for that about a month ago (can't find it now) that describes replacing the framing. I hope that's what it is because it did not look good. Here is how it looked

Maybe they're changing the name again.

Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse Offers a Fresh Take on the Fan Experience

Gensler with Office for Visual Interaction

https://www.architecturalrecord.com/articles/14761-clevelands-rocket-mortgage-fieldhouse-offers-a-fresh-take-on-the-fan-experience

Home to the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team, the former Quicken Loans Arena opened its 2019–20 season last autumn with a name change and new front door. After an extensive renovation by Gensler—which included bringing the 26-year-old venue to state-of-the-art standards as well as adding a glazed lobby—the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse today welcomes guests and passersby with a fresh take on the fan experience. Rather than assaulting them with the bold, digital graphics and signage typical of sports facilities, the arena engages the public with nuanced displays of color and light, visible from the street. Behind the glass face of the new steel structure, an 80-foot-high by 840-foot-long internal wall snakes around the lobby’s expanse, hovering above its floor. Erected in part to veil back-of-house and hospitality spaces, the wall doubles as a backdrop onto which light scenes can be projected.

For as terrible as the new arena name is, that abbreviation is top notch and I hope it catches on.

Cleveland Cavaliers team shop to get facelift

With the National Basketball Association's All-Star Game coming to Cleveland Feb. 20, 2022, work is about to get underway on giving a fresh new look to the Cleveland Cavaliers team shop at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in downtown Cleveland.

Permit applications were submitted to the city last week by Van Auken Akins Architects, LLC of Cleveland on behalf of the Cavaliers Operating Company LLC. Initially, this round of work will be for removing all furnishings, lighting and decorative features to create a white box space in which to put an updated retail operation. Estimated cost of the interior demolition work is $40,000, according to the permit.

Aren't they supposed to put sponsorship logos on their jerseys sometime soon ( like in the next few years )

Many of you are probably aware already- but I just received my March 28 hard copy issue of Crain’s today - great article on the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse having its busiest month since 2019 in March.

They had 35 ticketed games and events in 31 days - compared to 16 events there last year. That included 10 Cavs games, 7 MAC Men’s basketball tournament games, 7 Monsters games, 3 major concert events (New Edition, Eagles & Tool), The Cleveland bridal show, WWE Monday Night Raw and the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.

The MAC tournament alone generated around 14.5 million dollars in economic impact with many attendees from outside northeast Ohio.

Seems like literally yesterday there was  the debate about whether The Q needed a renovation - and soon after, we were seeing images of it frequently here on UO.

I’m very gratified to see that the venue is doing so well and drawing so many people to downtown for a wide variety of great events.  Frankly, it’s a little scary to think what that part of town would feel like without the big league presence of the Cavs and the various exciting events that are being held there regularly.

RMFH is one investment that Clevelanders can really be proud of, in my humble opinion.

As someone who works in arenas all around the world, I can attest that we are lucky to have such a great facility right here in Cleveland.

Anthony Bonavita and his team should be commended for the job they do there.

Since I’ve been heavily critical of any new, or doming of, Browns stadium, I’ll point out that I DO think the RoMoFiHo is and was a good project. It hosts 150+ (maybe 200+?) events per year and gets people into the city. That, in turn, supports the restaurants and other amenities that have brought residents to downtown. Quite frankly, having this good arena is far more likely to bolster our convention business than a dome.

Cleveland Cavaliers receive OK for $24 million in publicly funded work at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

by Nick Castele

Quote

The nonprofit that oversees Cleveland’s baseball stadium and basketball arena approved more than $24 million in taxpayer-funded repairs at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Wednesday.

But left unanswered was how exactly the public will foot the bill.

Typically, the Gateway Economic Development Corp. draws on a Cuyahoga County tax on alcohol and cigarettes –known as a “sin tax”– to pay for repairs. The Cavaliers have largely exhausted their allocation from those proceeds, however – meaning the city and county will have to scrounge for the money elsewhere.

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse to add special coating to glass facade to prevent bird strikes

Gateway Economic Development Corporation, the nonprofit that oversees the Cavaliers arena, approved paying for a coating highly visible to birds. But one board member cautioned that there is little money to spare with other arena repairs looming.

Gateway, the nonprofit that spends taxpayer money on the arena and ballpark, ultimately signed off on the $845,975 expense

I don't understand how this wasn't thought of prior to the original glass installation.

Antony Bonavita, the Cavaliers’ executive vice president for venue operations, reminded Gateway’s board that the NBA franchise is fronting that $24.4 million in the hopes of reimbursement. Asked if the team could split the $845,975 with Gateway, he replied in the negative.

“We’re laying out $25 million right now in hope that we’re going to get it back at some point,” Bonavita said. “We are maxed out.”

Cavalanche "snow machines" were part of new lighting rig just installed in Rocket Arena, largest in an NBA arena

Bret McCormick - SportsBusinessJournal - Apr. 28, 2025

Cavs installed new lighting rigs right before the playoffs. Here's a view from Game 2

The new lighting was also joined by the new "snow" machines for the Cavalanche celebrations. I'm not sure how much these improvements changed the gameday experience, but the Cavs sure do put on a good show. Fans loved the fake snow/bubbles.
