Posted March 23, 201510 yr Saturday (March 21) I took a tour of the new Scranton Road Towpath Trail with a guide from the Metroparks. It was very interesting despite being 20 degrees colder than forecast with fog and wind... cant wait to return in the summer. I don't go into the flats very often so seeing all the old abandon buildings was fascinating. There is SO much potential. I hope between the Towpath, the Lake Link trail, and the Canal Basin park, along with Rivergate and the new development on the East Bank that some of those old structures (many of which I never knew existed) will be saved. Would love to know who/how this was done on the underside of the Loraine Carnegie Bridge Can anyone tell me what this building is?? So neat Also the brick structures in the background... so much potential One building that IS in use is one I never knew existed. This firehouse is home to the fireboat. The bridge by the firehouse is no longer in use but it is too expensive/difficult to remove it. A little scary to stand under the huge counterweights.
March 23, 201510 yr So awesome. Between the weather and the scenery, this thread is about as Clevelandy as it gets in my mind (and I mean that in a good way). I love love love this project. Can't believe how close we are to a completely off-street pedestrian/bike connection between Tremont and Downtown now. As you hint in your intro, preventing demo in this area is super important. So much of the built environment of the Flats has been lost even in the last 20 years. In terms of preserving sense of place, holding on to these remaining industrial buildings is near the top of my preservation wish list.
March 23, 201510 yr That explains why the bridge is now lit up! Impressive - I need to see this next time.
March 23, 201510 yr Fantastic pictures. I'm excited to see what the Flats look like in 10, 20 years. It could became an amazing and unique area.
March 23, 201510 yr Thanks for the winter shots. But you will have to go back in the summer when all the wildflowers are in bloom. It is absolutely beautiful. The wildflowers stretch from just where the new Inner Belt Bridge is being constructed, to the firehouse on the river.I've been on this stretch many times already.
March 24, 201510 yr Strap said it better than I could. Preserve the history! The new I90 bridge looks better in real life than in the initial renders imho. PSU? Portland State University???
March 24, 201510 yr Great thread! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
