March 27, 201510 yr The development happening there is incredible, but it would be disingenuous if me to attribute it all to the streetcar. Amazon is building a new corporate HQ complete with glass domes http://www.gizmag.com/amazon-hq-update/28750/pictures#5 at the southern downtown portion of this streetcar route and many of the more normal new buildings pictured here will also be occupied by Amazon and connected to HQ by the streetcar. So obviously Amazon is a huge factor driving growth. They are even paying for and sponsoring an extra streetcar for this route to increase the service frequency. www.cincinnatiideas.com
March 27, 201510 yr I like how the Troy Block uses their Walk Score in their advertisement. Pretty neat right? That pic also gives you a feel for how the whole neighborhood is laid out. The picture is looking south. The streetcar comes from the northern edge of downtown on parallel streets on the right hand side of the picture towards the foreground. Then it travels alongside the park edge to the left side of the picture and ends just past the marina. www.cincinnatiideas.com
March 27, 201510 yr South Lake Union is completely unrecognizable from when I lived in Seattle 12-15 years ago. And I knew that area fairly well, I did two separate month long stints staying just south of the Space Needle and used to take walks through what was then a mix of low rise industrial buildings and parking lots.
March 27, 201510 yr They are even paying for and sponsoring an extra streetcar for this route to increase the service frequency. Well, imagine that. Wish that happened in other places that start and end with the letter "O." "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

March 29, 201510 yr this area is a-boomin and has changed a lot over recent years. for the better. goid to show it as a model for cleveland and ohio for sure.
March 29, 201510 yr I went looking for the location of Jake's photo on google street view (no definitive conclusions) and I realized this Amazon building is also brand new (still had fencing up last summer) next to a streetcar stop. It's the one with the green dots in the courtyard from the pictures above. www.cincinnatiideas.com
March 29, 201510 yr They are even paying for and sponsoring an extra streetcar for this route to increase the service frequency. Well, imagine that. Wish that happened in other places that start and end with the letter "O." Ya, but since everyone hates Amazon right now because the SLU area is basically gridlock during the week, they were fairly obligated to chip in where possible. Also, the trolley is not a heavily utilized form of transportation. It does get you from a point in downtown to the eastlake area, but overall it's a very small and kind of gimmicky addition to public transportation (e.g. I have walked from Amazon to the trolley's endpoint in downtown before the next trolley arrived more than a few times... with luggage). The light rail, on the other hand, is great - but it's still very limited. Seattle is going to need to start getting creative with transportation as the huge boom in density is driving a lot of people up the wall.
March 29, 201510 yr Well, that's incredibly shortsighted of the haters if they're more concerned about traffic than the jobs and economic development Amazon is generating. They must never have spent time in a dying rust belt town. I imagine Amazons huge presence is causing spin off tech development in the neighborhood as well. The whole area does admittedly have an Amazon-land theme park vibe to it. I suspect the streetcar will be more heavily utilized once people are going to and from these buildings pictured to the glass dome HQ a few blocks south. Here's a recent Seattle transit success story involving light rail: http://www.capitolhilltimes.com/2015/03/capitol-hill-light-rail-station-may-save-sound-transit/ www.cincinnatiideas.com
March 29, 201510 yr Yeah that is just about the location of my 2009 photo. I believe I was on the east side of that street and pointed northwest.
