Great Lakes Brewing Company Workers Take Steps to Unionize with United Steelworkers

"Production workers for Great Lakes Brewing Company, the oldest and largest craft brewery in Ohio, signed union cards at the United Steelworkers union hall Sunday in a declaration of their intent to unionize. An internal organizing committee had been working through the ebbs and flows of the pandemic to build support for a union. And after talking with a number of local chapters, the committee voted to affiliate with USW for its rich history in Northeast Ohio, its democratic processes and its abundance of resources for local workers."

On the beer front--THIS Saturday, the 17th:

"The Brewsology Beer Festival will take place at the Great Lakes Science Center for a one of a kind experience -- a night at the museum! The event will feature dozens of local and domestic breweries, sampling their summer seasonal beers."

Not sure whether to put this in the general Ohio beer thread or the Cincinnati or Dayton ones (considering AFAIK MillerCoors' biggest Ohio brewery is in Trenton, about halfway between Cincy and Dayton), but since it's a national operation, I'll put it in the general thread:

https://fox8.com/news/molson-coors-retiring-11-economy-beer-brands/

Molson Coors retiring 11 ‘economy’ beer brands

Molson Coors will be discontinuing a number of its economy brands including Keystone Ice, Icehouse Edge and Miller High Life Light as part of a company-wide effort to “premiumize” its higher-end offerings. ...

At least 11 national and regional brands would be among those being retired, representatives for the company have indicated to both the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Food & Wine: Hamm’s Special Light, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve, Icehouse Edge, Keylightful, Keystone Ice, Magnum, Mickey’s Ice, Miller High Life Light, Milwaukee’s Best Premium, Olde English HG 800, and Steele Reserve 211.

========================

I honestly didn't even know about most of these brands, but Milwaukee's Best ("Beast") and Keystone Ice were regular kegs (kegulars?) at OSU house parties back in the day, where I learned very early in freshman year that I was going to be a beer snob (and booze snob generally) and therefore stopped going to house parties--or if I did go, I would literally make spillproof pitchers of mixed drinks before I went and show up with those.

It looks like they are keeping Milwaukee's Best Ice and Light, just dropping the Premium. Also Hamm's is still alive, just dropping Hamm's Special Light. There is still an opportunity to get Hamm-boned, which is what my Chicago uncles call getting drunk on Hamm's.

And yes, when I was in college kegs were all Keystone Ice or Beast Ice or Natty Ice. I think many college kids drink seltzers now since they are easy to drink and they are 5%.

How can there be a premium version of Milwaukee's Best? Isn't already Milwaukee's best beer?

😉

You guys had kegs of Keystone Ice? That stuff has as much alcohol as an IPA. I would imagine a lot of people ended up with alcohol poisoning. Our kegs had Keystone Light, which is the cheap beer that is more well-known as a college student favorite.

I was in NYC a few weeks ago and was talking to the owner of this place (https://goo.gl/maps/8XpqDrfxSAQZsUDE8) in the UES and were started talking about Cincy, IPA's and Rhinegeist and Madtree and he told me he's had at least 4 people come in and request Truth. Pretty cool to hear that!

sometime next year, Cleveland's Brick & Barrel Brewing, along with Fairport Harbor's The Pompadour tapas bar, will open The Beach and Barrel in Fairport. I kept thinking, why does this place look so familiar? It was my dentist's office as a child🪥. I could have used a beer after a visit 😒

Toledo's HEAVY Beer Company will open a new tap room, game room, brewery and 1st floor site for a not-for-profit diner where new restaurant concepts can be developed. In a three-story former auto showroom on Adams Street, in one of the few remaining unrenovated buildings. Planned to also have Toledo's largest rooftop bar. Same owners as Toledo Spirits on Summit and Black Kite Coffee in the Old West End. Very excited for this development, planned completion in 2023.

Ohio's first Latin-owned brewery in Willoughby. Interesting that the three women who started this, who I assume are related, have the last name of Stuyvesant--Dutch-Latinos??

Just a nibble here for those who like... um, nibbles:

A certain Cleveland based brewery (not Great Lakes) with production occurring in the city core is looking to expand significantly and has three locations in mind. Euclid is one of them and the space they are looking at is in a former 100+ year old steel factory.

That's all I have for now. You'll hear it from me if it happens.

You little tease.

^Rhinegeist in Cincinnati is 28th largest craft brewer. On a related note it bugs me that Boston Beer Company doesn't list Cincinnati as one of it's locations since from what I can tell all of it's beer is made in either Boston, Cincinnati or Breinigsville PA, but for some reason they show Milton DE which is where Dogfish Head is located (which merged with Sam Adams) but why are they listed and we aren't?

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

^ Is the Cleveland International Film office still there? I always wondered why they chose that high profile location because they never seem to do any sort of visible promotion or events there.

Yes, but the CIFF office is moving to Playhouse Square. Which makes sense now that the festival is there.

If they have a storefront here's hoping they'll run CIFF films 24/7.

What exactly is GLBC overall plan in terms of customer facing experiences? According to NeoTrans ( @KJP) most recent article on GLBC Scranton plans, they plan on having a "brewpub/tasting room" on the Peninsula. I'm just curious how GLBC plans to sufficiently differentiate these two nearby drinking/dining experiences from each other so as not to cannibalize their own market.

The article mentions something about food trucks which would be cool, I'm just interested to see where they end up going with it. I'll definitely check it out regardless!

I'm working on an article.

My best guess from a few years ago was that the GLBC brain trust visited Stone Brewing in San Diego and wanted their main campus: think wooded walking trails, natural areas, secluded picnic space, bar + restaurant, hotel and still ample room for brewing and distribution.

nice pics added

^I would also suggest checking out Southern Tier's main campus as an example of what Great Lakes wants to do.
