Posted April 4, 201510 yr I was pondering the impressive growth of the brewery business in/around Cleveland and after some light Googling, it seems the rest of the state is seeing similar successes. From what I could...surmise...here is where Cleveland currently stands: Cleveland city limits: 1. Buckeye Brewing Company https://www.facebook.com/buckeyebrewing (man, that "Tapstack" looks straight outta Portland, OR) 2. Brick and Barrel Brewery 3. Cleveland Brewery (E.185th?! Who knew? But digging the Danny Greene beer) 4. Cleveland Brewing Company (Butcher and the Brewer) 5. Forest City Brewery (Duck Island) 6. Goldhorn Brewery (E.55th) 7. Great Lakes Brewing Company 8. Hansa Haus Lasko Brewery 9. Indigo Imp Brewery 10. Market Garden Brewery 11. Nano Brew Cleveland 12. Platform Beer Company 13. Portside Distillery and Brewery 14. Waterloo Brew (North Collinwood) Surrounding Cleveland Suburbs: 15. Black Box Brewing Company - Westlake, Ohio 16. BottleHouse Brewery And Meadery - Cleveland Heights, Ohio 17. The Brew Kettle - Strongsville, Ohio 18. Chardon BrewWorks - Chardon, Ohio 19. Cornerstone Brewing Company - Berea, Ohio 20. Fat Head's Brewery - Middleburg Heights, Ohio 21. Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon - North Olmsted, Ohio 22. Franklin Brewing Company - Elyria, Ohio 23. Little Mountain Brewing Company - Mentor, Ohio 24. Rocky River Brewing Company - Rocky River, Ohio 25. Willoughby Brewing Company - Willoughby, Ohio How's it going in Akron, Cincy (looks quite impressive!), Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, Youngstown, etc?!? Thrillest recently ranked Ohio 12th in the country for beer, but I'm starting to think we may already be or may end up a little higher in the ranks very soon: http://www.thrillist.com/drink/nation/every-state-in-the-usa-ranked-by-its-beer
April 5, 201510 yr Here's a good write-up on craft brewing in Ohio from the Dayton Business Journal: http://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/blog/2015/03/dayton-ranks-no-1-in-ohio-for-number-of-breweries.html (and btw that title is purely because of the # of breweries per capita, don't take it as Dayton has better breweries necessarily haha)/. But they are really nice across the board. Thee can be considered "groundbreaking" IMO: Fifth St. Brewpub is the nation's first brewery co-op (you can be a "brewpub owner" for about $100). NPR did a cool story about it a while back, and it has helped reviatlize the St. Anne's Hill neighborhood a lot. Carrillon Brewing Co. is the first production brewery in a museum (the brew is done with processes authentic to those utilized by the breweries of the 1850's. Food and dress is of the period too. If you're here it is definitely worth a stop!!) And Pinups and Pints is the first brewery/strip club. Yes you read that correctly. Not in city limits though, it is right by Medway, OH.

June 10, 201510 yr http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2015/06/10/brewdog-confirms-central-ohio-brewery-restaurant.html BrewDog is coming. After the teases and speculation, the Scottish-based craft brewery Wednesday confirmed that it will build its U.S. production brewery here in Central Ohio. “Columbus has got a fantastic beer scene already, so it’s going to be fun to brew our beer in this vibrant Midwestern metro,” the company wrote. “We considered so many potential locations in the U.S. but eventually it was how much we loved the people of Columbus and how welcome they made us feel on our visits that put Columbus firmly at the top of our list.” See Also: https://www.brewdog.com/lowdown/blog/dog-bless-america

But you missed Wiedemann, which is planning on relocating its brewing (back) to Newport, KY.
June 11, 201510 yr Interesting that BrewDog chose Ohio. They have a lot of higher ABV beers, including Tokio (18.2%) which I purchased yesterday in Kentucky. Guess those will still be shipped from Scotland. I remember when BrewDog arrived in 2009 and they brought their beers to Nicholson's in downtown Cincinnati. I was able to sample a Tactical Nuclear Penguin smuggled in as it was well over 30% ABV. Potent! "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
June 11, 201510 yr I ordered 2 bottles of Sink the Bismarck a few years back...40% abv. Surprisingly, the hop character really popped out, but far too boozy. Good news for Columbus.

June 12, 201510 yr ^ So many missing as to be laughable. No Mt. Carmel, Blank Slate, Listermann, Moerlein, 50 West, Rivertown - and that's just a few of the Cincinnati-area breweries that should be on this list.
June 12, 201510 yr Yea, that list is very odd. Not sure why they would exclude so many especially since the numbers for Cincinnati area breweries was printed earlier this year: Bad Tom Brewing: 2013: 80 barrels; 2014: 220 barrels; 2015: 350 barrels Blank Slate Brewing: 2013: 394 barrels; 2014: 635 barrels; 2015: 1,000 barrels Braxton Brewing (Covington, KY): 2015 (opened March 27): 2,000 barrels Cellar Dweller Craft Beers: 2013: 271.15 barrels; 2014: 386.75 barrels; 2015: 600 barrels Christian Moerlein Brewing Co.: Production numbers not released. Taft's Ale House: 2015 (opened April 6): 3,000-6,000 barrels Tap & Screw Brewery: 2014 (opened Dec. 19): 56 barrels; 2015: 1,000 barrels *2015 numbers are projected production "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
June 12, 201510 yr So Great Lakes produces more than the rest of the list combined. As their product is now available from Chicago to the East Coast, I submit they've become a borderline national brewer. They're pretty close to growing themselves off this list. June 12, 201510 yr So Great Lakes produces more than the rest of the list combined. As their product is now available from Chicago to the East Coast, I submit they've become a borderline national brewer. They're pretty close to growing themselves off this list. I wouldn't get too comfortable with that. Rhinegeist is set to pretty much double production every year for the foreseeable future. They are growing exponentially. I'm curious if they will hit a wall in the next few years or continue to grow. Also, I would be shocked if they don't brew more than they are predicting. I wouldn't be surprised if they pass 35,000-40,000 barrels this year.

They've barely made a dent in the overall beer market dominated by Anheuser–Busch and MillerCoors. Rhinegeist may grow themselves off the craft brew list someday soon too. June 13, 201510 yr That list is missing Fatheads, Thirsty Dog and Hoppin Frog, which I would guess are all in the top 5 in production

Thirsty Dog of Akron puts 2015 at 16,000 barrels. Fat Heads of Cleveland puts 2015 at 20,000 barrels. Those two would easily be #2 and #3 on the Ohio list and yet the columbus article completely omits any mention of those two.
June 19, 20159 yr Ohio Beer Bill Finally Gets Debate Ohio lawmakers are finally debating whether the state should boost the legal limit of alcohol allowed in beer. State Rep. Dan Ramos, D-Lorain, says he provided testimony last week before the House Committee on Government Accountability & Oversight on his House Bill 68, which would increase the limit from 12 percent to 21 percent. Now, Ramos is trying to rally others to provide testimony. He’s calling on businesses and organizations in the craft beer industry to show up at a committee hearing at 1:30 p.m. June 23 in Statehouse room 114.
June 19, 20159 yr One would have thought that passage of this bill would have happened before BrewDog committed to building their U.S. brewery near Columbus... "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
June 19, 20159 yr Perhaps they had insider knowledge it was going to pass. But I agree. It seems like they should have waited to make sure.
June 23, 20159 yr Beer Legislation Brewing in the General Assembly By Jesse Bethea, Columbus Underground June 18, 2015 - 8:30 am The Ohio General Assembly has spent a lot of time thinking about alcohol in the last year, from the creation of open container entertainment districts to the sale of wine at farmers’ markets. Now let’s take a look at three pieces of legislation currently sitting in the Statehouse: 1) HB 68 would raise the allotted alcohol by volume for beer manufactured in Ohio from 12 percent to 21 percent. 2) HB 37 would allow a person to possess beer or liquor in a market if the beer or liquor was purchased from a licensed vendor in that market. 3) Language added to the Senate’s operating budget would allow a qualified permit holder serving beer or liquor to move last call from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. during a “major event.” According to the Plain Dealer, the new provision was added specifically for the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland. MORE: http://www.columbusunderground.com/lots-of-legislation-brewing-in-the-general-assembly-jb1
June 23, 20159 yr ^That third item is kinda lame. Only Cleveland and Columbus would be eligible (despite Cincinnati being a larger metro area). Why not just let them stay open later whenever? If it's ok when there are a lot of people, why wouldn't it be ok when there isn't a convention in town? Stupid rules are stupid.
July 21, 20159 yr Nielsen (who apparently rates alot more than TV and radio) looked at craft beer sales within three categories across the country. All 3 C's are well represented in those categories: http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/news/2015/tapped-in-craft-and-local-are-powerful-trends-in-the-beer-aisle.html
November 12, 20159 yr Platform's Beer Co.'s new Gypsy Brewing to open soon By Marc Bona, cleveland.com on November 12, 2015 at 8:00 AM, updated November 12, 2015 at 9:08 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Platform Beer Co. will enter the holidays by giving and getting. It's giving by being a part of the Skylight Foundation's holiday toy drive to benefit the Cleveland Police Foundation. And it's getting more space when Gypsy Brewing opens. Platform's plans for Gypsy are moving ahead, said Justin Carson, one of Platform's owners. The brewhouse was scheduled to be delivered Wednesday, Nov. 11, with fermenters coming within the next two weeks, he said. The operation will be in the old Leisy Brewing Co. at 3506 Vega Avenue, near Fulton Road and Interstate 90. Gypsy and Platform are less than a mile apart. The 120,000-square-foot space will serve a dual purpose: Platform will use 90 percent, with New Albion Brewing there as well. New Albion is a revitalization of what is known as the first microbrewery, established by Jack McAuliffe in 1976 in northern California. But the remaining space is for brewers who need more room but who cannot afford or don't want to commit to their own, permanent location. This way, they can lease space at Gypsy. http://www.cleveland.com/drinks/index.ssf/2015/11/platforms_gypsy_brewing_to_ope.html
May 11, 20169 yr Ohio moving to eliminate alcohol limit on craft beer COLUMBUS - Could the West End's Samuel Adams Brewery start brewing Utopias - which contains 28 percent alcohol? Will Columbus-area's BrewDog USA craft some higher alcohol content brews? Yes, if Senate President Keith Faber, R-Celina, has his way. Faber wants to eliminate the limit on alcohol content in craft beer, currently 12 percent alcohol by volume. The plan passed the Senate, 32-0, Wednesday and heads to the House. The last time Ohio lawmakers increased the limit was in 2002, when it rose from 6 percent to 12 percent. That means Ohio breweries can't manufacture beers, like Utopias, that cater to craft beer enthusiasts. Eliminating the cap would be good news for the 157 craft breweries operating in Ohio – one of the state's booming industries. Just a year and a half ago, Ohio reached 100 craft breweries, and that number could surpass 200 by the end of the year, said Mary MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association. Beers with higher alcohol content would be labelled. Rep. Dan Ramos, D-Lorain, has tried to ditch the limit for several years to no avail. But now, Faber wants to eliminate the cap, adding the change Tuesday to a bipartisan House bill to allow open containers in Findlay Market and Columbus' North Market. Faber's support means the proposal is sure to pass the GOP-controlled Senate. This is from the Cincinnati Enquirer. Strangely, it says "COLUMBUS" and then immediately talks about a Cincinnati neighborhood, which I found confusing.
May 19, 20169 yr Statehouse kills alcohol limit on beer in victory for Ohio brewers High ABV beers could be legal in Ohio by this fall. John Kasich has 30 days to sign the bill, which would then go into effect in 90 days. July 1, 20168 yr Ohio craft cider makers hoping for rules change Ohio’s liquor laws are easing, allowing brewers to make more potent beers and craft distillers to operate like breweries. But there is another group of craft alcoholic beverage makers that has found itself facing the kind of barriers its beer- and liquor-producing brethren once grappled with before winning regulatory change. August 30, 20168 yr At midnight tonight, Ohio will officially have no ABV limit on beer. Nice to see that local brewers will be able to stay competitive nationally. http://www.dogfish.com/blog/120-minute-heads-ohio Ohio!!! We've heard your cries, and after years of waiting and wishing, we can now legally distribute our 120 Minute IPA in the Buckeye State! Thanks to House Bill 37, Ohio was able to say goodbye to ABV limits and hello to a whole new side of our portfolio. At midnight on August 31, 2016, Ohio's 12% ABV limit will officially be lifted! This is cause for celebration ... right?! To kick things off the off-centered way, accounts from across Ohio are tapping kegs of 120 Minute at midnight on, you guessed it, August 31, 2016!
August 31, 20168 yr Ohio is just now developing a brewing industry. A bunch of craft breweries, no matter how good, don't mean it's an industry. When you get the whole supply chain -- from growing and pelletizing the hops and growing and malting the grains -- then you've got an industry. We're right on track: https://614columbus.com/2016/08/hoppin/
October 26, 20168 yr Not specifically related to the brewing industry, but this story deals with an interest regulation on the other side of the three-tier system: Cincinnati's stock market bar is ready to ring the opening bell Cincinnati's first bar that plans to price beer dynamically like stocks – with prices rising and falling based on demand – will open this weekend. [...] There was some consternation over whether that pricing scheme jibed with Ohio law, which dictates that alcohol prices must remain fixed for a calendar month and cannot change within that period. Well, happy hour is a notable exception to that statute. Bars are allowed to lower prices during happy hour, and technically happy hour extends until 9 p.m. in Ohio. (Most bars end their happy hour at 7 p.m.) Queen City Exchange co-owner Nick Broerman told me that the bar will be pricing its beers dynamically during the entire duration of happy hour, 4-9 p.m. After that, he said beers will be priced competitively with other bars in the city.
January 5, 20178 yr Ohio places fairly well... Columbus #9 Cincinnati #13 Cleveland #19 Beer and cities: A toast to 2017 By Joe Cortright 2.1.2017 Celebrating the new year, city-style, with a local brew Champagne may be the traditional beverage for ringing in the new year, but we suspect that a locally brewed ale may be the drink of choice for many urbanists today. Much has changed about American beer in the past two decades. Most of the post-prohibition era was characterized by the industrialization of beer-making and the consolidation of the brewing industry; the number of breweries in the US fell from roughly 500 at the close of World War II to only about 100 in 1980. But since then, consumers have turned away from the big national brands and increasingly patronize local, even neighborhood micro-brewers, who offer a wide array of ales, stouts, porters and other distinctive brews, often featuring local ingredients. http://cityobservatory.org/beer-and-cities-a-toast-to-2017/
January 5, 20178 yr I haven't seen much written about this, however, the big problem in the past with small distilleries was that Ohio law did not allow tasting rooms. That changed in 2016: Ohio’s craft distilleries closer to being on par with brewpubs, wineries with food, bars allowed on site http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2016/05/26/ohio-s-craft-distilleries-closer-to-being-on-par.html The Ohio ... passed House Bill 351 ... allowing the state’s microdistilleries to continue to operate on site retail shops and giving those facilities access to the A1A liquor permit, which would allow mixed drinks and food, essentially putting the distillery experience on par with visiting a brewpub or winery.
February 9, 20178 yr Ohio added 40 more craft breweries last year, and has room for many more No matter how big craft beer may feel, it’s still small in the grand scheme of beer. Ohio closed 2016 with 194 craft breweries in the state, up by 40 from the year before. Counting federal permit applications for breweries yet to open, Ohio rises to 236 as of today with more surely to come. Meanwhile, the national count is well over 5,000 with breweries opening at a 2.1 per day clip. Ridiculous? Unsustainable? Not so, said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, the craft beer industry’s national trade group. “Those numbers don’t tell the whole story,” he said. “Four hundred breweries (in Ohio) isn’t crazy.” He put the national figure at between 8,000 and 10,000 breweries. Watson was the keynote speaker Wednesday at the third annual Ohio Craft Brewers Conference being held this week in Cincinnati. One reason to believe the market isn’t near over-saturation is that not all craft beer is created equal. “The vast majority are really, really, really small,” Watson said. March 29, 20178 yr Big acquisitions taking bite out of craft beer's growth ...The increasing competition and how to stand out is a message Watson shared in February as the keynote at the Ohio Craft Brewers Conference. A reminder on the Brewers Association definition of craft brewer: Less than 6 million barrels of annual production, no more than 25 percent of the brewery can be owned by a non-craft alcohol company, beer must be made with traditional or innovative brewing ingredients or fermentation. That last rule eliminates the world of flavored malt beverages ( think Four Loko) from being considered craft. June 7, 20178 yr Between OTR in Cincy and OC and D-S in Cleveland, does anyone have an official head count of how many breweries have opened in the state in the last year?
August 16, 20177 yr New Ohio rule unshackles Cincinnati craft distilleries Since Prohibition, Ohio has operated an archaic system for the storage and distribution of spirits, which kneecapped Cincinnati craft distilleries. No more. Until June 14, all distilleries in Ohio were unable to sell their spirits directly to bars and restaurants. Unlike craft breweries, which are able to self-distribute in Ohio, distilleries first had to send their liquor to a state warehouse. The state determines the wholesale cost of the liquor, then turns around and distributes it to liquor stores, bars and restaurants for a markup that it also sets. August 23, 20177 yr Ohio wants more liquor stores and is looking for operators It isn’t just consumers thirsty for spirits, beer and wine. The state of Ohio is seeing rising sales of alcohol and plans to meet the demand with the largest expansion of state liquor agencies in years with upwards of 20 potential openings in the next 18 months. September 19, 20177 yr Ohio changes the way you get Pappy Van Winkle bourbon Pappy Van Winkle is something of a Holy Grail for bourbon enthusiasts, one of the rarest and most expensive bottles to secure. The state of Ohio is making it at least more equitable, if not easier. The state launched a bottle lottery this year to give Ohioans a chance to buy four difficult-to-find bottles of the Buffalo Trace Distillery's most sought-after bourbons: Pappy Van Winkle 15-year, Pappy Van Winkle 23-year, Old Rip Van Winkle 10-year and Old Rip Van Winkle 12-year. September 27, 20177 yr What does craft beer mean to the Ohio economy? Craft beer contributed $2.67 billion to Ohio’s economy in 2016. That put the state seventh nationwide for economic impact, according to the Brewers Association’s 2016 Craft Brewing Economic Impact report. That was a 23.6 percent increase from the $2.16 billion impact reported in the 2014 study. May 20, 20205 yr Carryout, delivery orders of alcoholic drinks would be permanently allowed under new Ohio legislation Quote Want wine and cocktails available for delivery permanently? Looking to enjoy an alcoholic beverage outside of a bar, restaurant, or winery? Some Ohio lawmakers are working to take your order. Under the devilishly numbered House Bill 666, bars, restaurants, small breweries, micro-distilleries and wineries could sell drinks in covered cups, or alcoholic beverages (such as wine) in their original sealed containers, for customers to drink away from the premises. Food delivery services such as DoorDash or Grubhub would be allowed to deliver such drinks as long as they first register with state liquor authorities. ...Separately, the bill would permit establishments to allow on-site drinking in parking lots, as well as outdoor areas “immediately adjacent” to their premises, so long as the property owner gives written consent.
May 20, 20205 yr Okay what are the chances two-thirds of the Ohio House and Senate will pass this? My prediction is that churchy mom-type groups will be all over this....the literal nanny state folks. Prove me wrong Ohio!!! p.s. I just inadvertently broke my boycott of cleveland.com lol.
May 20, 20205 yr 2 hours ago, surfohio said: p.s. I just inadvertently broke my boycott of cleveland.com lol. Thanks for the warning - I almost clicked on it myself! Links should come with a disclaimer if they go there now. I hope all of this helps move people along with the existing open container districts which are already allowed. I know Van Aken District in Shaker is moving along with expanding theirs to include the Market Hall, but the Flats East Bank has been talked about and stalled forever it seems. W25th with all the breweries would be perfect for it I feel. Wonder why it has never been pursued there. If not all of W25th, having little Market Ave (if they city can ever get their sh*t under control with closing that street) would be great too.
May 20, 20205 yr totally forgot about the Plain Dealer union busting. Sorry for linking to them! I don't live in Cleveland, so it isn't at the top of mind, but I won't make the same mistake again

March 2, 20214 yr I remember when Platform Beer was the underdog in Cleveland - and when it was local and not corporate owned. What a shame that it's come to this: Platform Beer Co. Taproom Closed as All Employees Walk Out On Saturday, February 27, posts and images started circulating on social media indicating that staff of Platform Beer Co.’s Columbus taproom had walked out. A sign posted to the taproom door read, “The entire Platform Columbus crew has quit. The taproom is closed until further notice. Thank you!” [...] Cleveland-based Platform opened its Downtown distribution facility and taproom at 408 N. Sixth St. in December 2016 and has since grown to six locations across the state.
April 14, 20214 yr Ohio moves up craft beer rankings after adding 47 breweries in 2020 Dan Eaton - Columbus Business Firsyt - Apr. 14, 2021 "The Brewers Association this week released its state-level figures for the industry and, despite an 11% decline in production volume for 2020, Ohio still moved up one spot in the annual ranking to 5th overall. Texas is now 6th. ... Ohio added 47 new breweries last year while more than a dozen closed. The net gain took the state to 366 breweries, according to the Ohio association's count. ... The Ohio association said at least 73 more breweries are in planning and are expected to open in the next few years."
