Canada might be getting a 1,000 kph vacuum-tube train

Maureen O'Hare, CNN • Updated 1st September 2022

(CNN) — A Canadian company has unveiled plans for a fully electric train-style vehicle which could travel at 1,000 kilometers per hour and, it claims, would cost less than a plane ticket to travel on.

I was looking at real estate in Kitchener-Waterloo while Ion was being constructed. I should've pulled the trigger! This also suggests what Hamilton and London are missing out on by not building light rail.

Rail News: Passenger Rail
Canada issues RFP for High-Frequency Rail project

Canada's Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez last week announced the request for proposals (RFP) has been issued for the project to build a Quebec City-to-Toronto high-frequency passenger rail line.

The High-Frequency Rail (HFR) project will be the largest Canadian infrastructure project in generations, Transport Canada officials said in a press release. The HFR network primarily will feature new electrified and dedicated passenger-rail tracks extending over 600 miles.

Are those the same units as Brightline?

Similar. Both use the Siemens Venture passenger coaches. But Brightline trains have SCB-40 Charger locomotives at both ends of the train. VIA's have SC-42 Charger locomotives at only one end of each train and a cab/coaches at the other. The nose of the locomotives and the cab cars are of slightly different styles to what Brightline has, too.

VIA Rail to order over 300 passenger cars and locomotives for Canada-wide train fleet replacement

NEW: “We’re making the largest public transit investment in Canadian history. Our government’s new Canada Public Transit Fund will invest $30 billion to expand, improve & modernize public transit —& make sure housing development is linked to that funding.”

Kitchener-Waterloo used to be a podunk couple of towns. Now the region is thriving. Can you imagine Akron-Canton doing this? Or Dayton-Springfield? Not in this country/state.

I talked to a friend in Welland (between Toronto and Buffalo) and he says that since COVID and more remote working, people are fleeing the high cost of living in Toronto in a big way.  The Ontario government put a ton of funding (through local governments) into new housing, and it's going up everywhere.  In ten years he predicts an unbroken urban city from Buffalo all the way into Toronto.  And already the traffic into Toronto is a nightmare on Tuesday-Thursday -- the days most hybrid workers actually have to be in the office. Expanding rail under those conditions makes a ton of sense.  Inter-city TOD.  Good for Canada.

The Golden Horseshoe. It hasn't stopped the construction in Toronto which was gaining 100,000 new residents every year as of a couple years ago. Maybe now it's gaining less, but it's certainly not losing population....

As of April 2024, the Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) Crane Index reported that Toronto had 221 cranes on construction sites, which is more than four times the number of cranes in second place, Los Angeles.

Too bad the GO Transit train extension from Kitchener to London was discontinued. Slow track didn't help ridership. GO Transit from Toronto to Niagara Falls is still doing well.

Driving along that route last month, the amount of construction is shocking. And a ton of high rise construction. Even some of the smaller towns like Grimsby had 2 or 3 newer high rises.

Wait until America returns Trump to the White House. Canada is going to have a massive housing and transportation crisis.

BREAKING: #Canada's government is going ahead with high-speed—not just high-frequency—rail between #Quebec City and #Toronto

Trains to reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres (186 mph) per hour.  20 million people live in this corridor.

As recently as 15 years ago, Cleveland had at least 20 flights each way to/from Chicago.

The QC-TOR Corridor is becoming more and more like Europe. No wonder you think about moving there.

Hopefully this succeeds, and with fewer hitches, delays, and budget overruns than its Californian counterpart. If successful, I could see this being expanded into the US at a later date. Both Toronto to Chicago (through Detroit) and Toronto to New York (through Upstate) have been found to be potentially viable in gravity models and such. For that matter so has Montreal to New York.

Clearly crossing international boundaries adds another layer of complexity, and it's far from certain this project will even get off the ground, but still it's fun to hope for.

I counted 14 flights today. Maybe it was more than that. I thought it was 40 flights, meaning 20 each way. Perhaps it was 40 each way? Calling all UO aviation experts to refresh my memory!!

I see that two of the flights were Challenger 300 business jets, including one owned by the Bank of Utah Trustee and the other by Vista America.

I wish this was extended west to at least London. Then a further extension to Port Stanley or Erieua could make a cross-lake high-speed ferry competitive with driving between Cleveland and Toronto.
