The prison was closed in 1990 but have become a tourist destination. Numerous movies, music videos, and TV shows have been filmed here. Most famously is the Shawshank Redemption, although the movie did not actually use the cell blocks for filming, just the exterior and some of the offices. For a while Mansfield was getting ranked like 279/300 on those "Best Places to Live" listings....was dragged down by lack of entertainment, lack of cultural amenities, bad weather and bad economy. But these photos really show a diamond in the rough. Plus, it's home to Snow Trails Ski Resort. I've just been reading that ski resorts are successfully becoming year round attractions. Seems something to build on.
