Posted July 6, 20159 yr Wheeling is the seat of Ohio County. In 2010 it had a population of 28,486. In 1930 its population peaked at 61,659. Despite losing so many people it has held on to many of its historic structures. July 6, 20159 yr Excellent tour. I have only followed Wheeling closely the last five years or so, but in that time I have watched the city demolish dozens of historic properties, including almost an entire block of downtown. They now have a city of incredible architecture surrounded by parking lots and vacant lots.
February 9, 20169 yr ^Supporting my above comment, the Wheeling Intelligencer is reporting that five more buildings are set for demolition. This includes the former Bank of the Ohio Valley, most recently the Peking Garden. From Google Streetview:
February 10, 20169 yr With a population below 30K, thats an awful lot of historic stock to keep and maintain. Is there enough money in Wheeling to sustain it much longer?
February 10, 20169 yr Also gone. This was originally the Greyhound Bus Station in Wheeling, when the currenty WVNCC was the B & O Railroad Station. Thank you for sharing the pictures of what Wheeling has left. Brief history of my connection to several of the buildings above, I attended kindergarten and first grade at Cathedral and was baptized at St. Al's in Center Wheeling. I grew up in Wheeling(The Island, South & Warwood) 1988-2000 when my family relocated to Cleveland and I have now settled in Columbus. Seeing the revamped neighborhoods in Columbus makes me think always of the potential that Wheeling has with a lot of it's existing and former infrastructure. However politics and a virtually non-existent economy because of leaders in the 90's not being able to see the future like those in Pittsburgh did has left my hometown as I knew it in virtual ruins.
