despite the fact that interstate highway construction really wrecked the flow of this city even more than most, providence is one of my favorites.  i'll start w/ around downtown on this thread & add another thread later for the gorgeous housing and etc.

talk about your early american, providence was founded in 1636!  wiki tells me the 2004 census estimate put the city's population at 178,126. its metropolitan population is 1,188,613. more interesting is how dense the city is, it really feels and looks urban everywhere you go. it is only 20.5 square miles in size and the pop density blows away the ohio three c's  (prov 9,401.7/mi²; clev 6,166.5/mi²;  cinci 4,249.0/mi² &  cols 3,383.6/mi²).

wiki also reminds that providence is the home of many colleges: most notably the prestigous Brown University, an Ivy League university, and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), one of the world's top art colleges. Several other institutions of higher learning include Johnson and Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, the Community College of Rhode Island (Providence campus), and the Providence campus of the University of Rhode Island.

***more providence to come***

Neat tour! The angling streets make for some interesting views.

Thanks for the tour!  Providence doesn't get the attention it probably deserves because it's overshadowed by Boston, I suppose, but it's certainly an interesting city.

Thanks for the pics.  Looking out from the choo choo, I couldn't remember if there was really a city behind that giant new mall.

Too bad the screwed up the Biltmore w/ that elevator.

Thanks for the tour, I enjoyed.

Nice pics.  I definitely would like to check out Providence sometime.

I wonder how large the Biltmore Hotel chain was.  Wikipedia has a short list of cities, but I can't find anything more indepth.

I just LOVE Providence - thanks for the pics!

thx guys!

here's a preview: i got one more thread from this weekend trip of the gorgeous homes and colleges on the east side (federal hill is westside). its coming up when i can get around to getting them hosted. also a newport thread. stay tuned!

You know, when I went to Providence a couple years ago, I really enjoyed the downtown yet there was this feeling that "something was missing."  I don't know if it was because the mall/capital/canal area was a bit apart from the actual core and something in the core was missing, I have no clue how to pinpoint it down.  But it was a beauitful, small downtown.

And Federal Hill (in your other thread) was very impressive as well, as it was actually authentic.

i agree, it's kind of like buenos aires in way, i like it, but something is missing. personality? it's all nice, but nothing really stands out? i dk what. i do know that the highways really destroyed the flow and the new waterplace mega-mall does downtown no favors either. maybe thats it.

they do have an up and coming warehouse district right next to downtown called the jewelry district. a buddy of my providence friend bought a building there. it's nice. here are a few leftover shots of that area:
