Posted August 22, 20159 yr Which neighborhood would you rather live and why? Stuck deciding between the two and would like other people's opinions on the areas.
August 23, 20159 yr between the two I'd go with North Collinwood. Pros for N. Collinwood: Relatively stable cool commercial districts (waterloo and E 185th) Lake Erie access (Euclid Beach, beach club streets) Great interstate access Cons for N. Collinwood: Farther from downtown than Slavic Village spotty public transportation
August 23, 20159 yr ^ E 185th is far from a "cool" commercial district, but between it and Waterloo, it is indeed better than anything in Slavic Village
August 23, 20159 yr I'm a west sider. Can only draw from a couple experiences in Waterloo and driving through Slavic. Based on that, Waterloo. I like waterloos potential a lot actually
August 23, 20159 yr Both have upside. But Waterloo gives N. Collinwood the edge; it's on a faster trajectory. Now the x factor for Slavic is the Towpath Trail. I believe the spinoff from trail connection is going to exceed expectations.
August 23, 20159 yr I agree with North Collinwood because of Waterloo, but also because of the quality of restaurants in the area. Grovewood Tavern is a great place, and there are a number of good places to go on 185th, from casual (Muldoon's, Chili Peppers) to trendy (The Standard) to upscale (Bistro 185). Also, I've heard that Scotty's has very good Italian food although I have never been there.
August 23, 20159 yr Grovewood Tavern just closed, unfortunately. I heard great things about it, though. \ North Collinwood seems to be in better shape overall, and Waterloo is becoming the hippest little commercial district in the city. East 185th is an old-school walkable neighborhood retail strip, one of the most intact in the city. I do love East 65th, Fleet and the little Downtown around E 55th and Broadway, though, and the Towpath Trail connection could be a great asset. I guess it's hard to pick one neighborhood over the other, as they are both pretty hit or miss. I would suggest that you should compare the specific block you would be on rather than the neighborhoods as a whole. Both neighborhoods vary within themselves more than they vary from one to the other.
August 24, 20159 yr Another factor in favor of N Collinwood is the potential merger of EC into Cleveland. That will help a struggling nearby area and connect Collinwood better with the rest of the City proper
August 24, 20159 yr Because I view it as being on the upswing while SV seems like it is still in a downward spiral. Both have potential for sure. SV really got hit hard by the housing crisis. Any reason why you're picking between the two?
August 24, 20159 yr I have historic family ties to SV, my brother lives in NC. Unequivocally the latter. North of Lakeshore is strongly preferred.
August 24, 20159 yr Grovewood Tavern just closed, unfortunately. That sucks. I hadn't heard about them closing.
August 24, 20159 yr ^Me either. Did they just completely shut down or are they taking their operations elsewhere? I have historic family ties to SV, my brother lives in NC. Unequivocally the latter. North of Lakeshore is strongly preferred. Some people limit the definition of N Collinwood to the street north of Lakeshore. I myself consider it to be anything north of the Shoreway. Of course north of Lakeshore is preferred, but it is also a lot more expensive and I would think rentals are hard to come by, if that is what the poster is looking for. My recommendation would be to stay east of 152nd, maybe even 156th, although there are some good street between 152nd and 156th the closer you get to Lakeshore.
August 24, 20159 yr Yes, grovewood shut down, they won't be re-opening. It's too bad. I never got over to that neighborhood very much but when I did, I tried to always stop there. I am a view/not reply person as I really don't know enough about either area.

August 24, 20159 yr IKR? I have very little free time and money for any concerts or clubbing type activities. I think I went to one concert all of last year and haven't been to any this year. It's also really a far drive for me and not some place I'd want to go by myself, so that limits it further.
August 24, 20159 yr An alternative to Slavic Village is Newburgh Heights. It's just west of Slavic Village, west of I-77. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

But I totally agree with you. Ever since I moved to the west side places like Waterloo and Coventry seem 1,000 miles away sometimes. Slavic Village is centrally located, so it certainly has that going for it.

My brother lives on E. 156th just north of Lakeshore. It's a dead end, quiet, and reasonably nice. The houses are small. The Euclid Beach Apartments can be annoying but not too much so. Villa Angela Park is right there. The Wildwood area doesn't seem bad either.

August 24, 20159 yr Cuyahoga Heights would be a better choice if you have kids, but Newburgh's not bad. I like the looks of Cuyahoga Heights (especially along East 71st), but I worry about being downwind of the water filtration plant west of I-77. It's a strong smell passing by there on the highway. The biggest difference between Newburgh and Cuyahoga Heights is the schools. The latter has their own district which also includes Valley View. That's why it's often tough to get a place there.
