A 16-passenger pod every 30 seconds? I think we're going to have some capacity issues (this is the existing CTA station at O'Hare).... June 14, 20187 yr ^Privatization, of course. Plus, the capacity of this thing is amazingly low, just 2,000 passengers per hour. The only innovation here is that they would run very small trains through very small tunnels on battery power instead of using a third rail. Then they're going to write off a huge loss on the thing but call it a victory.
June 14, 20187 yr I hope companies that have constant losses become at least slightly less appealing now that you can't carry them back anymore.
June 14, 20187 yr What's amazing is that Musk's cost estimate for his system comes in basically the exact same as the CTA proposal from 10 years ago that would have built new surface express tracks for the blue line from the superstation to O'Hare. https://www.nbcchicago.com/investigations/How-Chicago-Spent-400M-On-a-Subway-Superstation-to-Nowhere-293754431.html The only improvement Musk's plan makes is an estimated 2x faster speed and the fact that he CLAIMS he won't want any public money. How does Musk's sewer pipe attract any more riders than the CTA plan? It might get a few more because it'll be faster, but the CTA project was never expected to make money. Keep in mind that vehicles traveling at 2x the speed does not halve the speed of the trip. In fact the faster speed might be completely inconsequential in what will still be a trip that takes 1 hour from the time you leave your office to the time you get to the gate. Unless you actually work within 5 blocks of Block 37 (and many do), a trip to the superstation will require a trip...on the blue line. So why not just stay on the damn blue line?!!!

Lacking amenities? I'm sure this has been thought out, or will be by the time it's functional. It's going to cost what the market will bear, which will be more than the blue line of course. How does it compete with cabs or Uber? We'll see.
June 15, 20187 yr High speed train so you can get to the airport sooner, then spend 30 minutes waiting in line for the TSA and dealing with flight delays. It might actually be worthwhile if you could go through security and drop your bags in Downtown Chicago and then the train drops you off inside the secure area at O’Hare.
June 15, 20187 yr Chicago makes risky bet on O'Hare access that ignores regional needs https://www.midwesthsr.org/chicago-makes-risky-bet-ohare-access-ignores-regional-needs "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 15, 20187 yr It might actually be worthwhile if you could go through security and drop your bags in Downtown Chicago and then the train drops you off inside the secure area at O’Hare. In Taiwan you can check your baggage, check in for your flight, and print your boarding pass at the train station in downtown Taipei, and then take the train out to the airport. The express train stops twice on the way to the airport though, so they can't try to pull of security. That seems like it would have a lot more liability issues. Here's a description of how it works: https://www.tymetro.com.tw/tymetro-new/en/_pages/checkin/index.html
June 15, 20187 yr Seoul has a similar system where you can drop your bags and get your boarding pass in the city, then get on a bus that takes you to the airport. I believe Hong Kong allows you to go through security downtown and then get on a train that takes you to the airport’s secure area.
Also, there is a Metra line that serves O'Hare, but it drops off passengers in the long-term parking area. You have to take a shuttle bus or the rail shuttle into the airport. Meanwhile the blue line stop is a subway station right in the center of the main terminal cluster. So you are many minutes closer to the security line if you take the blue line as opposed to Metra commuter rail. To be competitive with the existing Blue Line, Musk's tunnel needs to have a station more or less adjacent to the existing underground blue line tunnel. The rendering provided by his paper company was somewhere out in the parking lot. So yeah his "skates" might get to airport property faster than the existing blue line trains, but its passengers might barely beat it. Let's hope that Musk's tiny tunnels can be converted to some sort of narrow gauge light rail after he defaults and the City of Chicago buys the tunnels off of him for $1. The CTA has had plans to extend the blue line past O'Hare out into the suburbs. If the airport express were built, it would make a ton of sense as an express bypass for those suburbs.
June 15, 20186 yr Seoul has a similar system where you can drop your bags and get your boarding pass in the city, then get on a bus that takes you to the airport. NYC used to have exactly that. The Eastside and Westside Airline Terminals let you check in, drop your bags, ride a bus to the airport, and proceed directly to your gate. On the subject of hyperloop, a Financial Times article today on the Chicago project hinted in passing that hyperloop has been moved to the back burner. https://www.ft.com/content/24487aa2-6fa4-11e8-92d3-6c13e5c92914 Remember: It's the Year of the Snake
June 15, 20186 yr Hopefully the attachment works. It has been pointed out that this bored tunnel will irrationally follow the street grid instead of simply traveling in a straight line between DT Chicago and O'Hare. So not only is length being added to the run...there will have to be multiple curves. So this has raised the supicion that they're nervous about boring directly beneath homes and then getting sued when basements crack. Well what happens the same thing happens under a public street? Musk will find a way to saddle Chicago with the costs.
June 20, 20186 yr Firms with local smart-city offices picked for Hyperloop One feasibility study on Chicago-Columbus-Pittsburgh route International engineering firms with Columbus satellites will lead feasibility and environmental impact studies for a proposed Virgin Hyperloop One route that would traverse Ohio, turning at the capital city on the way from Chicago to Pittsburgh. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission said AECOM and WSP Global Inc. would be the lead consultants. The amount of the contract was not immediately announced, but MORPC earlier said the studies of the ultra-high-speed transportation mode would make up half of a $2.5 million Rapid-Speed Transportation Initiative, which will also look at high-speed passenger rail. June 21, 20186 yr Why does Columbus have to put up with this crap instead of building real economic-development-improving, city-fixing rail? There's always some damn distraction such as the '80s monorail plan or car sharing (didn't make it because it's private and has to maximize the wealth of the shareholders) being used as an excuse to not do the REAL thing.

June 21, 20186 yr I know it happens lots of places and has happened many times over the past 100+ years ("canals mean we don't need trains!") But Columbus might as well have three heads by this point in lacking rail.
June 22, 20186 yr Why hyperloop will be more like Lyft than Amtrak – and why that's exciting for cities like Whitehall along the route Hyperloop technology doesn't stop at mechanisms of propulsion – the idea is to revolutionize trip-planning and ticketing to create thousands of on-demand, nonstop trips for any point on the route. June 26, 20186 yr Here are a few reasons why betting Chicago's transportation future on an airport express, using hypothetical technology, at a wildly unrealistic projected cost, by a guy who hates transit, *might* be a bad idea. https://chi.streetsblog.org/2018/06/18/a-few-reasons-why-letting-elon-musk-build-the-ohare-express-is-still-a-bad-idea/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 26, 20186 yr It's amazing how zero supporters appear in the comments on these sorts of articles, but Musk's bullies are ubiquitous everywhere else. I think I saw a headline by someone about six months ago complaining about getting attacked by the Musk swarm for merely questioning the almighty Elon Musk. Here's something pretty scary mentioned by someone in the comments: "The owner of the system will have veto rights over "competing" projects. Connecting the Brown Line to the Blue Line could be blocked. Ashland BRT could be blocked. Improvements to the Antioch Metra line (which stops at O'Hare) could be blocked." This is a deal-breaker for me. Let him spend his own money and take all the risks but stay out of everything else.
June 27, 20186 yr Yep. Scary and stupid. Wealthy bullies everywhere. Welcome to America, 2018. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 27, 20186 yr Crossrail will soon serve London's Heathrow Airport (which is poised to become the biggest in the world -- about 30% busier than O'Hare) and 10 giant trains per hour will link it with Paddington Station, in addition to local tube service. Not sure how Musk's followers can possibly argue with the speed, frequency, and flexibility of traditional urban rail service to London's main airport.
June 27, 20186 yr No, the Chicago project is not a vacuum tube. It's just the "...Loop". From O'Hare to the Loop via the Loop. It needs to be a vacuum tube to be a HYPERloop. It's still an "in".

FFWD and nothing has happened. Some German college students came over and shot a little test craft in a steel sewer pipe at 200mph. Musk tweeted about it. July 12, 20195 yr The building measures 120x50. That's 6,000 feet. So the size of the auto parts section in a Wal-Mart. The California High Speed Rail tracks to Anaheim are planned to run directly behind the building. Like, stick your arm out the window and the train takes off your fingers. The hyperloop is never, ever going to exist. This is all a money laundering/Theranos type scam. A wolf in Tech's clothing.

July 30, 20195 yr Hyperloop One bringing test pod to Columbus during U.S. roadshow Virgin Hyperloop One is going on an American road trip. The Los Angeles hyperloop company is taking its XP-1 test pod to three U.S. cities that are eyeing routes for the high-speed tubular transportation system: Columbus; Arlington, Texas; and Kansas City. VHO hopes the tour will enable local communities to see the hyperloop test pod up close and learn about their states’ progress in bringing the technology to fruition. “When government and investor delegations come to our test site, seeing the technology makes it real for them,” said CEO Jay Walder in a statement. “Not everyone can come to the Nevada desert, so we’re bringing our technology to the people — the American people who will be riding this new form of transportation within a decade.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2019/07/30/hyperloop-one-bringing-test-pod-to-columbus-during.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
