On somewhat unrelated note, anyone who thinks construction has slowed down in the Columbus area needs to check out all of the construction photos posted over the last few days. We don't have 30-story towers under construction (yet), but the amount of infill going on is impressive. Agree on the first part. Been agreeing with/saying the second for years. There is as much if not more going on in Columbus development-wise as in other cities that we most commonly compare ourselves to, ie Nashville, Austin, etc.
July 9, 20195 yr Construction update: Appears 3 of the 4 cores have reached full height. Seems like this project will have a much larger impression on the surrounding area than I had originally thought. Here is a view from North Market parking lot this afternoon (which we can only hope won't be a parking lot much longer).

At least until Hilton 2.0 and North Market Tower are built. Being next to two 30-story towers will probably diminish its impression just a bit lol. All of these 6-12 story buildings have recently been built or are in the process of being built are really doing wonders for our city. The tall towers are fun but these types of infill are just as important.

They've removed the top of the building, down to the top of the windows. You can see it in this picture as well. I went back to the approved renderings and it does show a different cornice than what's on the Google Streetview. I'm surprised they were allowed to change it.
August 19, 20195 yr They've begun the steel structure , whats interesting is that it kind of cantilevers over some of the older structures they are saving. Anyway, here is todays photo update!
August 19, 20195 yr Low quality pic, but here's a different angle of the cores from a bit of a distance.
October 9, 20195 yr Morning photo updated for you all, looks like framing is going up pretty quickly.
October 9, 20195 yr ^^ So glad they at least kept the facades on this. Having it stepped back about 30 feet or so is much better than just a facadectomy where it would be right up to the street with the wall of the hotel. This kind of treatment(rather than outright demolition of existing pre-war structures)should be encouraged more often whenever possible or feasible-like on some of the older lower buildings still left along High. There still is a future office component behind this, right? Edited October 9, 20195 yr by Toddguy
October 30, 20195 yr Photo update below, looks like they have framed out the fourth floor and are headed up.

This has been so interesting to watch — I can honestly say I have not seen another recent commercial build completed this way. Curtain wall and the classic steel structures have really been all that I have noticed. Am I correct in this thought? Or have we seen something similar with mostly metal framing studs? Loving the progress

January 31, 20205 yr Obligatory: CU's pictures are outdated.....it looks much bigger than that now (see post above for more up-to-date photo) I was going to post in this thread this morning but I didn't have a picture. I got a good look at it from *High Street* looking down an alley and wow.....it looks so much bigger than I could have imagined. I'm quite surprised. Edited January 31, 20205 yr by Zyrokai
January 31, 20205 yr This is by far one of my favorite projects in the city right now. I need to remember to grab a pic next time I'm there but there was a comment regarding the way is cantilevers over the northern most building and it is quite fascinating they seem to keep large sections of the interior of that building. I was never in it so I don't know if it was to preserve something unique. Edited January 31, 20205 yr by DTCL11
February 6, 20205 yr A little update during my drive home for lunch today. Looks like they are framing out in steel the top floor. Loving the presence this project is having for this area/street.

I think they will, it'll come after this phase. They may wait for the Chipotle office building down the road to get completed as that access road is quite congested with construction equipment already! That whole area will be built out in the coming years.
February 7, 20205 yr Oh, I finally see what people have been commenting on -- what seems to be the cantilevered portion of the building over the back half of the old Park Street Patio. The amount of huffing and puffing some developers do about even keeping a facade of a building, and this development is really maintaining the integrity of the streetscape facade and doing interesting things. I'm still nervous about the actual materials that will be used on the new build, but this is at the very least a very responsive and interesting massing design. More of this, especially for future downtown infill around what little remains of our historic building stock

It's to remain parking lots for North Market until North Market Tower is complete. No plans for it yet, but the Chipotle lot was also owned by the same company, Hamilton Parker; so I wouldn't be surprised to see it sold to NRI.

I know that when the article came out announcing the start of the Chipotle project, it mentioned that it was part of a bigger expansion of the Arena District including other lots in the area and along Spring St, so I wasn't sure if that meant the lot by Kilbourne. It'll be interesting to see if anything pops up over on those Spring St lots soon.
February 7, 20205 yr One lot that has always been of interest to me is the old sports bar (name is escaping me) at the corner of vine and convention center. Back when the building was removed, that lot was floated as another parking replacement for Market tower while under construction. While it currently sits as a gravel lot, I often picture a tall mixed use filling that void. The lot dimensions and location beg for density.
February 8, 20205 yr Why not have one more pic? Here's from High & Swan. It looks much larger from High Street here in person than the picture portrays, imo.

It’s going to happen, just a matter of time.

I also think about the corner of Front and Vine, catty cornered to North Market. That small little parking lot that's left would be another great spot for a high rise...

May 6, 20205 yr I keep forgetting to grab a pic but the restoration of the north building is fascinating. I am excited to see the outcome and why they went through such effort to preserve it.
May 7, 20205 yr I have to admit, this just might turn out better than i thought it would. It looks pretty cool thus far and brings some much needed height variety to that particular area.

I am so glad they decided to do it this way and save that old frontage along the street. Hopefully it will look very nice when completed.

I agree, and hopefully we will continue to see more of this kind of thing around downtown. One spot that could be interesting for another development like this would be the old building on High Street that houses Char Bar and the small two story building next to it. If you look at the aerial view you can see that the buildings don't extend back very far, so their could be the potential to add on to the back and then build up. It would be an interesting spot for a tall skinny tower with an interesting classical look at the street level.
May 7, 20205 yr Finally got a good picture of the north end where you can see they cantilevered the new over the old leaving the roof in tact as well. The did not do the same with the other buildings as far as I can tell.
May 26, 20205 yr The Downtown AC Hotel, not a ton has progressed on the exterior but the project did present its signage package for approval to the Downtown Commission today. Enjoy.
May 26, 20205 yr I'm really looking forward to seeing this when its all said and done. Low key turned into my favorite current construction project in Cbus.

July 8, 20204 yr It looks like they are starting to install the exterior materials on the AC Marriott in the arena district. I wonder if they plan on having a rooftop bar similar to Vaso at bridge park in Dublin. No articles on the project mentioned it.

July 9, 20204 yr I usually don't head down 670 through downtown before turning north on 315(usually going north)but today I needed to go through all the way on 670 to Gahanna and there was so much to gawk at! lol I had to be careful to watch the road. Rise! Columbus Rise!!!! Edited July 9, 20204 yr by Toddguy
