December 15, 20159 yr Author Typhoon Tower Swirling Into Coney Island Amusement Park in 2016 The largest water park addition in the park's history will debut in 2016 at Ohio's Coney Island Amusement Park, it has been announced. The addition will be named Typhoon Tower and will be a 16,000 square foot water play structure located in a currently open area near the amusement park's main gate. Above is a drawing of the addition that Coney Island has released, showing some of the fun that visitors will find on Typhoon Tower. Like all water play structures, the addition will have over 70 different interactive features that can be found while guests explore. December 15, 20159 yr So, did Coney contract with a local elementary school to prepare the rendering of this new 'Typhoon Tower'.....?
December 16, 20159 yr Surprisingly that's actually a fairly common art style for water park renderings. I have no idea why but it has been used by much larger companies as well including Six Flags and Cedar Fair.
March 21, 20187 yr Author A giant SkyWheel is coming to Cincinnati, but it’s not here to stay The largest mobile Ferris wheel in North America is coming to Greater Cincinnati. Coney Island will host the 155-foot SkyWheel for six weeks starting May 26. The ride features 36 six-person gondolas that will offer passengers a 360-degree view of Coney Island, the Ohio River and beyond during a 10-minute rotation. At night it will be illuminated with more than 500,000 LED lights. March 5, 20196 yr Author Coney Island adds new attraction Coney Island is opening a new water feature for the 2019 season. The park’s Cannonball Cove dive pool will bring two 1-meter diving boards and one 3-meter diving board to a new dive 12.9-foot pool area at the entrance of the Sunlite Water Adventure. Construction of the new pool will begin in early spring and will replace the Pipeline Plunge. September 10, 20195 yr Author Here’s why Coney Island’s rides are going away and what’s next for the historic park R.I.P. Python A Cincinnati summer staple is planning a major change this offseason. Coney Island will remove all of its rides in order to focus on its Sunlite Pool along with its surrounding water features in the coming months. The change is the beginning of a plan to focus on the water side of the park while adding to its Sunlite Adventure area ahead of Sunlite Pool’s 100th anniversary in 2025. Coney Island president and CEO Rob Schutter Jr. said the park began research a few years ago on how its guests spent their time and what they most enjoyed. “We began looking at the business aspect of it and attendance on both sides and how we did relative to gross,” Schutter told me. That feedback, which was also tied to several special events hosted on each side of the park, showed that the water side of the park was more successful and more of a draw for visitors while also spanning demographics from families to singles and young adults to seniors. September 11, 20195 yr It took 47 years longer than expected, but Kings Island finally killed [the amusement park aspect of] Coney Island!
September 11, 20195 yr I think it's the right move tbh. Even as a kid, I would spend more time in the pool area than the rides. I truly think the sunlight pool area is a really special niche and is a bit more unique than your typical water park like KI or the Beach Water park. I think add the growing cost of maintence for these aging rides + labor costs to operate the rides + growing hesitation and concern over carnival style rides thanks to the Ohio State Fair disaster has caused the recipe for this result.
October 18, 20195 yr Coney Island released their season pass prices for 2020: The base Splash Pass is $80, and the "Adventure Pass", which lets you bring a cooler into the park (whoop de doo) is $130. Meanwhile, a Kings Island Gold Pass is $110, a Cedar Point Gold Pass is a steal at $99, and a Kentucky Kingdom pass is $60. All three of those include both rides and a full waterpark, plus free parking. I don't see the Coney pool lasting much longer. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”
February 5, 20205 yr Author Trash... Coney Island to debut new attraction for 2020 season Poolgoers at Coney Island Amusement Park this year will be welcomed back for the season with a massive inflatable obstacle course installation in Sunlite Pool. The "Challenge Zone" is coming to Coney Island in May. With more than 150 feet of climbing obstacles, slides, monkey bars and balance beams, it will be the largest Aquaglide-branded pool obstacle course in the U.S., according to a release. December 14, 20231 yr It will be interesting to see what they do with this, if anything, that they couldn't have done with a remade Riverbend. I wonder if it will eventually just be phased out. Seems like the area is really going to be oversaturated with music venues.

Whoa, missed that entirely. I could understand having an indoor and outdoor on the same "Music Campus"campus but an indoor, an old outdoor and an ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE outdoor venue seems a bit odd, unless the days or warped tour, a traveling Lollapalooza and Bunbury are coming back. I guess if they ever do they will never be downtown again with this around.
December 14, 20231 yr Author Ugh. Coney Island closing permanently to make way for new music venue Coney Island is set to permanently close at the end of the year, putting to an end a much-beloved Greater Cincinnati attraction that's been around for generations, with plans to replace it with a brand new entertainment venue. Officials announced the 137-year-old amusement park's closure Thursday afternoon, saying operations will cease Dec. 31 following the conclusion of its Nights of Lights event. Coney Island is being sold to a subsidiary of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. "We thank the millions of patrons and employees from Cincinnati and surrounding neighborhoods," Coney Island officials said in a press release. "You made this a special place for all of us. But the time has come for this historic destination to offer new and different options for entertainment-seekers looking for fun and unique experiences." December 14, 20231 yr Sweet Jesus weeps.I guess If they incorporate Sunlite pool into this development ok but if not start the petition drive immediately....
December 14, 20231 yr I too hope it doesn't include Sunlite pool. There is plenty of room on the property if you remove all the structures, Moonlight Gardens would be a sad loss though.
December 18, 20231 yr This Coney Island news is so interesting. It seems like we went from “this region is in desperate need of a new music venue” to a glutton of projects in such a short time: On top of this (and the recent additions of ICON + Megacorp), there’s proposals for not only a new arena, but a music venue in FCC’s development and a plan to host concerts at a renovated Lindnder Tennis Center. I do hope this addition to Coney is successful, but I am so tired of hearing “we are always passed up by X” when no one can ever say what band/artist X is and how that relates to venue availability (as opposed to geography/schedule, etc). Hopefully this new venue is a MAJOR improvement over Riverbend. I got a notification that one of my favorite bands is coming to town this summer and I was truly disappointed to see it’s at Riverbend. What a fucking abysmal venue. In terms of the park: Coney as an amusement park was dead in 1972, when everything moved up North to Kings Island. TAFT Broadcasting kept the pool going for years and new owners brought in small rides in 1991, but new Coney was never anything on the scale of old Coney. Once the last few small rides left after 2019, the idea of an amusement park there was dead. Surprised to see Sunlite Pool also go, but figured it was always on borrowed time. (Anecdote: when I worked in the amusement industry years ago, there was talk of Coney installing a small, but exciting wooden coaster from a reputable manufacturer. The idea being it’d be the basis for a new vision/push to be a classic/small park and not just a company picnic destination. Sadly, it fell through). In terms of history, if they do keep anything—I really hope it’s Moonlite Gardens as centerpiece of their proposed “campus.” Something still available for receptions, etc., or even open to the public during shows. Maybe keep the parking lot entrance too as a historical nod. Maybe relevant for another thread: I hope this doesn’t incentivize MEMI to hold festivals out there, though. It sucks getting out to Riverbend for shows and I liked when Bunburry brought people to the city’s front door as opposed to Anderson Township’s parking lots. Maybe METRO will finally get some decent transit out there, though, with this new venue. Was always surprised that the Cove food truck park never took off out that way (/s). I'm calling it now, MEMI definitely intends to use this "entertainment campus" as the location for multi-artist, multi-day music festivals. I always assumed that meant Brady indoor + outdoor stages, but maybe they were waiting for this all along. That would be quite the fall from grace for MPMF.

December 20, 20231 yr There is nothing stopping them from having music festivals there...now. People could camp in the coney island parking lot. They could swim in the pool. I mean, does Bonnaroo have a huge pool? What about Burning Man?
December 20, 20231 yr I mean, they could fly in "DJ's" from Europe and have them set up on that island out in the pool and press play on their laptops. Everyone could take photos of themselves.

January 1, 20241 yr Flashback: it was the fall of 1992. It was Bush vs. Clinton, and each candidate commonly recruited multiple school bands to play at their campaign events. One band would play a song, then the other, for the hour leading up to Bush or Clinton appearing. We play Bush's rally on Fountain Square in September or October. Then we're told that we've been "hired" to play a Clinton rally at...Coney Island. On the appointed day, we board 3-4 school buses and arrive at Coney Island around 10am. We mill around the buses for about 45 minutes before we are told that we won't be playing because we're a Catholic School. Public Schools are union which means Democrats LOVE them. We get back on the buses and go back to our (catholic) school.

January 4, 20241 yr I've got another Coney Island story...from around 2015. We get an email from HR announcing that our company has upgraded from Sharon Woods and will be having our annual picnic at Coney Island. Included in this email is a stern warning from HR that ALL EMPLOYEES MUST CHANGE OUT OF SWIMMING ATTIRE AT SUNLITE POOL AND NOT AT THE COMPANY SHELTER NEXT TO MOONLITE GARDENS. The appointed day arrives, and SURE ENOUGH, two sisters who both work in customer service, and who are known to feud with one-another regularly at and outside the workplace, both come back from the pool in their bikinis just as the owners are handed microphones and start making announcements. Each takes 5+ minutes slowly putting regular clothes on over their bikinis (kept shuffling around items in their bags), in full view of the rest of the company.
January 8, 20241 yr Author Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra finalizes multimillion-dollar purchase of Coney Island for new concert venue Coney Island’s new owner finalized its purchase of the bygone amusement park for a little over $8 million Dec. 29, according to Hamilton County Auditor’s records. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and its wholly owned subsidiary, Music and Event Management (MEMI), purchased the consolidated parcels totaling 109.2 acres on either side of Sutton Road for $8.03 million. The purchase included 13 consolidated parcels totaling 71 acres on the east side of Sutton Road, located in the city of Cincinnati, and two consolidated parcels totaling 38.2 acres on the west side of Sutton Road, located in Anderson Township. March 9, 20241 yr Author Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra unveils new details on planned Coney Island music venue The new music venue the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and its subsidiary, Music and Event Management Inc., will build at the former Coney Island amusement park will be designed to replace Riverbend Music Center with a modern, amenity-rich amphitheater. The outdoor venue will be located inside the city of Cincinnati – northwest of Sutton Road, which divides the property between the city and Anderson Township – and deliver double the revenue to the symphony and at least $1.5 million in new admissions tax annually to the city, according to CSO/MEMI estimates. There has been public confusion about the music organizations’ plans, and its leaders, CSO President and CEO Jonathan Martin and MEMI CEO Mike Smith, outlined details for the first time to the Business Courier this week. Riverbend is 40 years old and needs to be modernized so MEMI can attract high-quality acts and drive more revenue to the CSO and the community, Smith and Martin said. From the Business Courier article posted above: CSO/MEMI will not demolish Riverbend or PNC Pavilion. The 4,100-seat PNC Pavilion will continue to operate as it has, featuring artists with smaller audiences. Riverbend itself will be retained to be used for festivals, but the types of summertime shows that go there now will be booked in the new, unnamed amphitheater.
March 15, 20241 yr Author SOUND CHECK Music, regional leaders say new venue at site of Coney Island is needed for the CSO and the community In Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Cincinnati is one of only three cities with an outdoor amphitheater seating 20,000 people or more, the others being in Greater Cleveland and Indianapolis. Only a venue that large will attract the high-profile tours that crisscross the country every summer. The city’s business and civic leaders view having Riverbend Music Center as an economic driver, but one that needs to be updated after 40 years. They have asked state lawmakers to grant the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra $20 million to help it build a new $118 million center at the now-closed Coney Island. “I see this as both an economic development and tourism play,” Cincinnati Regional Chamber CEO Brendon Cull said. “People travel to see their favorite bands. Musicians and artists want to play at great, iconic venues. We have this great music tradition in this city. A project like this ensures we have a great music future, too.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2024/03/14/coney-island-cso-riverbend-sunlite-pool-reaction.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
March 15, 20241 yr I'm glad that they are not going to demolish Moonlight Gardens, at least not yet, and I'm glad its located in the Cincinnati half of the property to give a bit more incentive to save it. At music festivals there's always a little tent or stage that has local artists or more acoustic style music and I think in their obvious desire to make this into a festival campus that a venue the size of moonlight gardens will still play an important role. Also, I've been to a wedding in Moonlight gardens and its a great venue for that kind of thing too, the rest of the year having a wedding / event venue would help to bring in some consistent revenue when the concert tours ebb and flow. It seems like they should be able to make that building work is all I'm saying.
