Last Fall, one of the guys at work came in all excited about how he scored an appointment for his vasectomy on the first day of March Madness.

  • Went to the game Iowa vs. Tenn and half the game UNC vs. Wash. First time in Columbus and was really fun. Wow, if anyone watched that Iowa vs. Tenn game it was an incredible comeback by Iowa (Iowa fan

I think this is a bit of overreaction at this point and the wrong move. Without playing in front of fans you diminish the amount of people in the arenas. With all the people off work and staying home,

Thursday will be a helluva day what with St. Patty's day and the first full day of the Madness!

No...

Yes i know. I don't write about Cincinnati very often especially on my cell phone. :-) I guess I should make sure I use spell check before I offend anymore of my southen brethren.

Just wanna say.....

GO ZIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some Kentucky Krazyness on the tournament's first Thursday.

- Kentucky barely beats Princeton to avoid elimination.

- Louisville does not barely beat Morehead State to avoid elimination.

- And where is Morehead State from?  Morehead, Kentucky.

I watched Syracuse and Ohio State practice.

All I gotta say is Syracuse looks athletic!

Tomorrow is going to be fun for downtown Cleveland.  I wonder what all the out of towers were thinking as they arrived to Cleveland right into a party of 300,000 people?!

Hah.  Called Morehead in one of my brackets and Richmond in the other.  Sadly, didn't call both in either--and in the one where I didn't call Richmond, I had Vandy in the Elite Eight.

Bah.  Madness indeed.

Big Day for the Big Ten yesterday.

- No susprise for #1 Ohio State and #3 Purdue to easily advance.

- Susprising to see #9 Illinois easily advance over #8 UNLV.  Illinois faces #1 Kansas next.

- Very susprising to see #8 Michigan trounce #9 Tennessee by 30 points.  Michigan faces #1 Duke next.

Rest of the Big Ten: #4 seed Wisconsin meets #5 K-State tonight.  The two #10's, Michigan State and Penn State were eliminated in their first game.

Alot of out of town plates in little Italy today.  THank you NCAA tourney.  Was anyone downtown last night with the tourney going on?  How was the vibe?  Were the restaurants packed around the Q?

It was extremely packed.

I was downtown last night... Yes they were packed.  I saw 4-5 different school names on clothing at about every bar/restaurant I hopped.

Here's a good video:

I got downtown right after the Ohio State game finished. It was absolutely packed in every direction.

The curse of living in Cincy. . .

Wildcat Nation vs. Buckeye Nation

Our accident of geography leaves us shooting airballs Friday night. The Ohio State University is playing Big Blue in the Sweet 16. How are we supposed to act? When you’re squarely atop the Mason-Dixon Line, are you Mason or Dixon?

Rooting against both is entirely counter-productive, though likely to occur in bars all over town. The calculus of Who You Hate More comes into play, certainly, and I’m guessing that nod would go to the Buckeyes. They take lots of our local football lode. Plus, a place that refers to itself as “The’’ anything opens itself up for mass derision.

  • If you like slick coaches, the ‘Cats are your guys. If you like slick, homespun coaches, hey, O-H. . .

  • If you prefer a team dotted with seniors, that can play any style and win, the Buckeyes are for you. This is the best quasi-amateur team in America today . . .

And the best reader comment "The real competition between these 2 schools is which program will end(up) on probation first: UK hoops or OSU football(and/or basketball)."

So how did everyone's bracket fare?  Probably not too good.  Well, you ain't alone.

This is only the third time that zero #1 seeds failed to advance into the Final Four.  And its the first time that zero #1 and #2 seeds failed to reach the Final Four.

  • In the "underdog" bracket: #8 Butler vs. #11 VCU

  • In the "favorites" bracket: #3 UCONN vs. #4 Kentucky

A Final Four poll has been added at the top of this thread.  It will run until Saturday morning.

Congrats to Coach Shaka Smart and VCU! Shaka is a graduate of Ohio's Kenyon College.

Obama, UK prime minister to be in Dayton for NCAA game

obama-official-photo1*280.jpg?v=1

When the NCAA men's basketball tournament tips off at the University of Dayton Arena next week, President Barack Obama and United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron will be in attendance, the Dayton Daily News reports.

More details on the leaders' visit to western Ohio is expected soon, the newspaper reports. Dayton will host the first four games of the NCAA tournament and a First Four Festival that is expected to generate $4 million for local businesses, the newspaper reports.

The State of Ohio is well represented again in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.  Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier and Ohio University all qualified.  Dayton will again host the First Four play-in games on Tuesday and Wednesday.  And Columbus will host second and third round games at Nationwide Arena.

It's too bad Cleveland State fizzled out at the end (of course Brown's injury didn't help) because the start of the season was very promising, dealing Vanderbilt (who just beat #1 Kentucky today) their biggest loss of the season (13 pts).

Chalk Thursday (14 of 16 top seeded teams won) gave way to Upset Friday.  A #15 seed hadn't beaten a #2 seed since 2001.  It happened twice on Friday.  Missouri loses to Norfolk State.  Duke loses to Lehigh.

All four Ohio teams advance from the Round of 64 to the Round of 32.

Duke, Uconn, Missouri have screwed my brackets!  I didn't have any going to the final four but Duke and Missorie being outed in the first round???  :wtf:

Aaaand the state of Ohio breaks a record for most teams in the Sweet 16! w00t

Way to go, UC, XU, OU, OSU!

Better watch your back now OSU! I'm thinking UPSET in Beantown!

I wonder if 2 teams from 1 city is a record. Either way, it's awesome!

To cap off the season of the big brawl with a rematch of UC-XU in the championship game would be pretty epic.

Awesome weekend in the tournament. First I got to watch OU win on Friday night then immediately watch Duke lose to Leheigh. Sweet.

Stayed up late watching the end of the UC vs FSU game and was late to work today. Oh well. I'd love ringside, I mean courtside seats to a XU vs UC rematch. After watching the OU vs SFU and Lehigh vs XU games, switching to the FSU vs UC was like turning on an NBA game. Those guys are huge.

Hey Mayday can we get an Urban Ohio basketball logo for this week?

Aaaand the state of Ohio breaks a record for most teams in the Sweet 16! w00t

^That is really getting noticed in the tournament coverage.

The Big Ten stood out too with a 9-2 overall record and four teams in the Sweet 16.

In going from the Sweet 16 to the Elite 8 - the four Ohio teams and the four Big Ten teams got winnowed down to only one remaining team: The Ohio State University.

Go Bucs.  Ironically I'm in first place in 4 of my brackets!  Daddy needs a new pair of shoes.

The Final Four features a rivalry and rematch.  The rivalry is a biggie with Kentucky vs. Louisville.  The rematch is Kansas vs. Ohio State.  One thing the Final Four will not feature is a cinderella.  All four teams are pedigreed programs.

Kentucky: 15 Final Fours and 7 Championships

Kansas: 14 Final Fours and 3 Championships

Ohio State: 11 Final Fours and 1 Championship

Louisville: 9 Final Fours and 2 Championships

Kentucky or Kansas?

Not Kentucky.

My vote for Kansas is wishful thinking.  Lexington will burn either way.  Stay classy, Wildcayuts.

^That's nasty man...

speaking of March Madness.  Can it get here already?  THere is no better thing in sports, in my opinion.  My prediction is that this years bracket is going to be a trainwreck.  No teams can assert dominance.  I guess you can make a case for Indiana and MIami.  Everyone else loses or wins in very unimpressive fashion.  Im looking for multiple upsets.

^Louisville.

Agree that it will be a cluster this year.

  • 1 year later...

Well, the 2013 March Madness discussion got wiped out the Great UO Server Crash of 2013.  Spoiler alert: Louisville beat Michigan in the final.

So here's the 2014 Tournament rundown at http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/2014/story/_/id/10618717/2014-ncaa-tournament-florida-gators-earn-top-overall-seed

#1 SEEDS:  Florida, Arizona, Wichita State, Virginia

OHIO TEAMS:  #5 Cincinnati, #6 Ohio State, #11 Dayton, #12 Xavier

I think this bracket is going to have alot of carnage, a la the year Butler, VCU Kentucky and connecticut made it to the final four. Not 1 #1 or #2 seed.  Should be fun though.

I actually think Harvard has a legitimate shot at Cincinnati.  The Crimson are 26-4 and came within 5 of UConn.  (UConn and Cincy are in the same league and UConn was 2-1 against Cincinnati, including a 2-point win in the conference semis, so they're on a reasonably similar level.)  And the Ivies have surprised people in the tournament before.

Can #4 seeds Michigan State and Louisville be considered long-shots if almost everyone is picking them for the Final Four?

Even President Obama is picking them.  In this year's Barack-etology, the President has a final four of Michigan State, Louisville and then #1 seeds Florida and Arizona - with the Spartans beating the Cardinals in the championship game: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/2014/story/_/id/10630406/louisville-michigan-st-arizona-florida-president-barack-obama-final-four

Honestly, this is the kind of thing that makes me want to pick against MSU, even though I was originally inclined to give them the nod (they were ranked #1 at one point this year, after all).

I've filled out two brackets, one with my law school alumni and one with my work people.  I filled them out with significant differences, because one is my "Big Ten is for real" bracket (that's my law school one, since that was at UVA and a lot of people there will be picking UVA to the title, so my Big Ten loyalty there cuts against the grain) and one is my "Big Ten will fizzle" bracket (that's my work one, once again cutting against the grain since a lot of people here will be taking Michigan, MSU, and even Wisconsin deep).

In my "Big Ten is for real" bracket, I'm going with the trend and taking MSU to the Final Four.  In my other bracket, I've got them losing to UVA, and I only have them reaching UVA because I dared to pick Harvard over Cincinnati in the first round.

Im very interesed to see how WIchita State handles this.  They have the toughness and experience to win these games and i know they are not afraid, but its a gauntlet.  Last year they could have won it all, but each year is different than the last.  If they make it through their region, tough to not see them winning it all.

I dared to pick Harvard over Cincinnati in the first round.

That might be the #1 upset that "everyone" is picking.  Which makes me think it won't happen.

Hah!  CBSSports gives the stats; I hadn't bothered to check.  32% picking Harvard.  Pretty high for a 12-seed.

Hope UC wins. MSU is at full strength now, nobody injured. Adrian Payne is a great player.

Kinda hard to do when they didn't play in the championship game.

No.  They were both ranked in the top three preseason.  The fact the committee seeded them both ridiculously low shouldn't cloud the fact that they are both prime candidates.

welp i'm actually 0-4 on the first rounder games going into todays madness. no billion $$ for me lol!

as for tonight, for one thing i dont think picking against syracuse was such a good idea either.

^maybe.  They are an enigma right now.  25-0 and then, what?  Five losses in 7 games.

Oh my!!!

Flyers.

Go Cards!

Well, it turned out that "everyone" was right (Gramarye too).  And congrats to Dayton for being the final Ohio team remaining in the tourney.
