March 30, 20169 yr Seemed about time to have a thread devoted to this topic, instead of peppering the development and restaurant threads with brewery news. Palace of Fermentation joins Sam McNulty's burgeoning Ohio City 'brewing campus' (photos) The Market Garden Brewery owners welcomed family, friends, dignitaries and assorted hangers-on to its Ohio City estate Tuesday for happy hour. Distribution in kegs begins the first week in April, with bottles to follow in early May, said Sam McNulty, one of the owners. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/03/palace_of_fermentation_launch.html#incart_gallery
April 1, 20169 yr ^That thing is mammoth. More brewing news: Forest City Brewery's opening coincides with Iron Brewer competition (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio – Forest City Brewery, in the works for well more than a year, is getting ready to open its doors and will do so by inviting the home-brewing community to participate in Iron Brewer for National Homebrew Day on Saturday, May 7. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/04/forest_city_brewerys_opening_c.html#incart_river_home X[/member], how are things going with the meadery?
April 3, 20169 yr Good, licensing is moving along. If you look at that article, the space with the wine racks is our tasting room. Build out should be finished pretty soon.
April 22, 20169 yr Cross posting here, to consolidate beer stuff: Thought there was a 9/12 District thread? If there is I can't find it. Meanwhile... Something called Masthead Brewing Co. is in the works for the old Superior Title building at 1261 Superior. Storefront renovation, outdoor patio and landscaping. Recently Incorporated, don't know who is behind it.
May 10, 20169 yr New brewery coming to E.12th-E.13th and Superior, as mentioned above! https://www.facebook.com/MastheadBrewingCo/
May 29, 20169 yr Paletriotic ale to be out in time for RNC By Marc Bona, cleveland.com Email the author | Follow on Twitter on May 27, 2016 at 8:01 AM, updated May 27, 2016 at 8:07 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Platform Beer Co. and Heinen's have decided on a name for a beer to be brewed in June and out prior to the Republican National Convention: Paletriotic, an American Pale Ale. The beer originally had been called UnconventionalAle, but it turned out Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. in Akron already was brewing a beer with the same name. Paletriotic will be part of a one-day fest of 50 craft canned beers, representing the 50 states, at the downtown Cleveland Heinen's. It will be held Saturday, July 9, a little more than a week before Cleveland hosts the four-day RNC. The red-, white- and blue-labeled Paletriotic is billed as having 100 percent American products and is composed of Cascade, Chinook, Pekko and Jarrylo hops. It's 5 percent alcohol and will be brewed and packaged at the Platform-owned Gypsy Brewery in Cleveland. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/05/paletriotic_ale_to_be_out_in_t.html

August 8, 20168 yr Was in Northern Kentucky a couple of weeks ago and bought a six pack of their Pilsner. I've a general aversion to the US micro-brewers obsession with hops, so figured I'd try a pils as that's typically not a hoppy beer. My cunning plan was thwarted though, as even their Pilsner was ruined by over hopping. I shudder to think what their IPAs taste like. My hovercraft is full of eels
August 8, 20168 yr ^Are these guys one of the bigger Cincy brewers? I'll have to give them a try this week if I'm out!

Czech Style Pils should be fairly hoppy, with a bit of crisp bitterness. German/Bavarian style should have a bit more malty sweetness and lighter hops.
August 8, 20168 yr ^Are these guys one of the bigger Cincy brewers? I'll have to give them a try this week if I'm out! It looks like they're the second largest in the state.
August 8, 20168 yr Czech Style Pils should be fairly hoppy, with a bit of crisp bitterness. German/Bavarian style should have a bit more malty sweetness and lighter hops. German Pils is nearly as hoppy as Czech Pils, just made with a different kind of hops usually and a little drier. Both are hoppy compared to an American Pilsner, which is what a lot of people probably think of when they hear Pilsner. On their website it says the Puma (I'm assuming that's what it was) is 40 IBU, which is on the upper end of the normal range for a German Pilsner (I've seen them anywhere from 25 to 45 or so IBU).
August 8, 20168 yr Most of Rhinegeist's beers are on the moderately to very hoppy side. Cougar, Gramps and Uncle are all much "tamer". I'm not a big fan of hops so I usually stick to their Cougar. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

August 16, 20168 yr i was surprised to find great lakes edmund fitzgerald porter on draft in asbury park, nj this weekend. either they expanded their range a bit or they have more east coast craft beer bar fans that made some effort to get it: http://www.asburyalehouse.com/beer/
August 16, 20168 yr I think GL distributes pretty widely in NJ now. Still hasn't crossed the river though!
August 16, 20168 yr ^ Great Lakes has been in the New Jersey market for at least 3 years, maybe more. I have a friend there who became obsessed with it and made a "pilgrimage" to the brewery a couple years ago.

September 18, 20168 yr Hansa Brewery in Ohio City Now Open Update: If you've been checking in on this project over the years, the news last month that Hansa was nearing the finish line was glorious news. Better news this week: Hansa's now open. There's an official grand opening on Saturday, but Boris Music says they're open now if you want to stop by. Six beers are on tap with Hansa's Oktoberfest coming as soon as this weekend. Word on the street is that Thirsty Dog 12 Dogs of Xmas is crazy good this year. Also, there's a nano brewer in San Diego, Kilowatt Brewing, that makes Cleveland Style Christmas Ale. I've got to get over there asap. Turns out the owner is originally from Westlake.
November 15, 20168 yr I thought 12 Dogs was very nutmegy this year. To the point it had almost a bit of bitterness.
November 15, 20168 yr ^it seems like these breweries ruin their holiday beers every year. I can't even drink them anymore.
December 5, 20168 yr Wow this sounds fantastic. And pretty funny after the recent Scene article about the lack of qualified service people in which Bruel said he was done opening new places for now (iirc). Just a few blocks from the proposed Thirsty Dog facility at FEB...which means the flats is starting to rival Ohio City as brewery central. Zack Bruell, Great Lakes Brewing's Luke Purcell team up on new Flats brewery CLEVELAND, Ohio - Zack Bruell will launch one of his most ambitious projects yet, a brewery and brewpub in the East Bank of the Flats, and he will do it with one of the area's most consistent and well-known brewers: Luke Purcell, a veteran of Great Lakes Brewing Co. The as-yet-unnamed brewery and brewpub will be located in the space formerly occupied by the Watermark, at 1250 Old River Road. The building - more than 100 years old by Bruell's estimate - sits about 100 yards south of Alley Cat, one of Bruell's restaurants. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/12/zack_bruell_great_lakes_brewin.html#incart_m-rpt-1

Bruell has a habit of saying that... Yet he seems to keep opening places.. At least in this case his son is returning from New York to help. Plus he seems confident that the location and concept will be a draw.
December 10, 20168 yr I haven't been giving as many updates as I had hoped, but I wanted to announce to UO that Western Reserve Meadery is now open! We're the latest piece of the redevelopment of the old industrial property at the corner of Columbus and Freeman Road in Duck Island. The mid-19th century tavern house (in red) is the entrance to Forest City Brewery, which is located behind the meadery. The tavern was home to what was likely the earliest beer garden in Ohio- The Atlantic Beer Garden. It is slated to host a "Brew and Breakfast" sometime in the not-too-distant future. In the background is an unrelated conversion of an old factory, last used for making tortillas, into apartments. Townhouses will likely inhabit the current fenced in parking lot eventually. The early 20th century carriage house was built over the original beer garden and now hosts our tasting room and production, Forest City Brewery, Duck Rabbit Coffee Roasters, and Cleveland Cycle Tours. It's much larger than it appears from the street, as it goes back quite a ways on the lot and has high ceilings: Our Tasting Room, we did all the woodwork ourselves. Open Fri 4-10, Sat Noon-10: Our Wine Racks, handmade by us: We have three varieties of mead for sale by the bottle to start, with more to come soon. We will also be distributing to local wine/beer shops, restaurants, and bars coming soon. We are excited to be a part of Cleveland's craft beverage scene and a part of the Duck Island neighborhood!
December 10, 20168 yr Nice station-area development. ;) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

January 31, 20178 yr Birdtown Brewery Takes Delivery of Brewing Equipment, Eyes Fall Opening Posted By Douglas Trattner on Thu, Jan 26, 2017 at 1:57 pm It’s been two years since we last reported on the Birdtown Brewery (2035 Quail St.) project taking form in the old St. Gregory Catholic Church in Lakewood's Birdtown neighborhood. Well, there’s good reason finally to post an update. “The brewing equipment is getting delivered,” says Sean Fairbairn, who along with Barrio Restaurant Group partner Tom Leneghan is behind the project. “It’s exciting because we’ve had this project on hold for several years.” Conservative estimates peg opening day in Fall of 2017. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2017/01/26/birdtown-brewery-takes-delivery-of-brewing-equipment-eyes-fall-opening
