Northeast Ohio becomes 1st place in U.S. to drink famed Airborne beer

Updated 4:43 AM; Posted 4:43 AM

By Marc Bona, cleveland.com mbonaCleveland[/member].com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland-based Sixth City Distribution has struck a deal with a Belgian importer to bring in nine beers - including one with a special back story dating to an American serviceman's actions in World War II.

With the deal, Northeast Ohio becomes the first market in the United States for De Pinte Imports, said Jeff Draeger of Sixth City Distribution. Limited distribution will begin Monday, April 23. Sixth City's distribution extends to downtown Cleveland and as far east as Chagrin Falls-Mentor, south to Akron and west to Sandusky.

And while the initial distribution will be very limited, Draeger said it's a coup for Cleveland.

Airborne beer pays tribute to an American serviceman's actions in World War II.

"It's easy to say 'This distributor is bringing in a Belgian tripel'," he said. "That might not resonate with people too much. But the Airborne beer, that's captivating."

Why do several Cleveland companies call themselves "Sixth City?" Why not go with the actual high water mark of "Fifth City?" This never makes sense to me.

It was the sixth city for a longer period of time IIRC, and it was used in the city's marketing materials.

'Star Wars' Day: Cleveland Brewery to transform into Mos Eisley cantina for weekend

CLEVELAND, Ohio - When you walk into The Cleveland Brewery this weekend, expect to be transported to a galaxy far, far away. In honor of May 4th - "May the Fourth be with You" - the bar at 777 East 185th St. is going galactic.

This May 4-6, you'll find characters, props and more inspired by the "Star Wars" franchise as Cleveland Brewery transforms into an all-ages Mos Eisley cantina. The movies will even screen on a projector on the back patio.

5th City was used as well for marketing. Seems silly to go with a less prestigious ranking

There's a euphony to Sixth City, but Fifth City is awkward on the tongue.  At any rate, the moniker leaves me sad, as it's really a reminder of how far it's fallen in population rankings.  What would we be now, the "Thirty-fifth City" or something?

CWRU Students Helped Matt Vann transform the Jolly Scholar from a Campus Bar to a Fully Functioning Brewery

June 13, 2018

by  Douglas Trattner

"We're hidden pretty good," says Matt Vann, owner of the Jolly Scholar. "I always say that we're the hardest brewery in Cleveland to find."

Jolly Scholar's location, tucked into a building on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, is just one of the challenges Vann faces that his competition does not. Despite being a captive audience, many students don't even reach legal drinking age until halfway through their undergraduate studies. Those who are old enough to drink disappear for nearly three months each summer. And then there's the staff, which experiences significant turnover with each new scholastic calendar.

None of that is news to Vann, of course, who replaced a generic food service provider in this space 13 years ago to open Jolly Scholar. He started out in 2005 with four beer taps, two of which were devoted to macro suds. Responding to the rise of craft beer, the owner later upped the number of tap handles to 24. Hard alcohol also found a home on campus at Jolly Scholar, which seems to fly in the face of the whole helicopter parent era.

"The agreement is that we want to be the responsible enabler," says Vann, asserting a better-here-than-there mentality. "Nobody is going to care about these students the way we are going to care about them."

"Our concept is built largely around our students," he explains. "We have masters of accounting students keeping the books and running distribution, we've got Weatherhead [school of Management] students helping to facilitate marketing strategies, we've got CIA students that help us with packaging ideas, and we've got chem students helping to propagate yeast."

The Jolly Scholar signs first distribution deal

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Jolly Scholar has gone from campus bar to brewery and now to a distributed brewing company.

The longtime Case Western Reserve University bar, which began brewing in 2017, has inked a deal with Sixth City Distribution. It's the Scholar's first agreement with a distribution company, owner Matt Vann said.

The Jolly Scholar to give away brewery ownership (video)

By Marc Bona, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hold on to your pint glasses: The Jolly Scholar has a giveaway planned to end all giveaways.

A classic 1970s film, a generous brewery owner and a creative idea will result in five fortunate people becoming owners of the bar-brewery on Case Western Reserve University's campus. Owner Matt Vann announced the details of the program today.

Probably the biggest part of the program is that the five will be chosen randomly and will not have to pay anything for the part ownership.

People come in to the bar and order beers all the time. But when Vann receives final approval to launch the ownership project, people will spend a lot of time watching bartenders pour their pints. That's because a golden capsule - five, actually - will be specially inserted into kegs at various times on assorted dates. The capsule will contain a compressed deed granting a percentage of the business to the beer holder. Vann said engineers on campus developed the capsule technology.

^ Good for the founders. They’ve worked their asses off (as far as I can tell) and are getting paid. So that’s great and I hope this leads to more Cleveland jobs.

On the other hand, I hate AB with a passion and can’t help but think they’ll F the whole thing up somehow.

It's all hearsay but a lot of folks on reddit have commented how Platform never really treated their staff well, and not to mention the falling out/lawsuit with Shaun (sp.?) now of Noble Beast. I'll admit they made some knockout brews on occasion, but there's a bunch of other places I enjoyed going to before this deal happened, and now, I'm definitely only going if friends insist on it. When I'm home, I'll see if I can dig up the Scene article where area brewers kind of seemed offput by Platform's style and ideologies.

I believe that Platform had some deep pocketed investors to get them expanded so fast.  I’m sure those investors got paid today.

I don’t see Platform continuing on in the same fashion of coming out with 3-5 new beers a week. AB is not going to have that.

Heck i can envision AB turning platform into a brand of taphouses across the nation that mainly carry all the beer of breweries that AB has snapped up.  That would include Goose Island, Elysian, 10 barrel, Breckenridge, wicked weed, devils backbone, and golden road.

Agree, but wanted to add a shout out to Goldhorn too. Sometimes overlooked, largely due to the location, but for me (and I’m an ex-beer industry guy) far and away the best beers in Cleveland.

Jolly Scholar not coming to Richfield; plans barrel-aging site at Case Western

The Jolly Scholar Brewing Co. isn’t coming to Richfield, after all.

But owner Matt Vann said Monday that the community won’t grant a zoning variance to allow the brewery. He said he withdrew his application for a state brewing permit about a month ago.

Meanwhile, the Jolly Scholar is taking over The Rough Riders Room in Carlton Commons on the Case Western campus and will turn it into a barrel-aging facility. The small restaurant will open soon, but it will be awhile for the permitting to be approved related to beer-making, he said.

A first in Lakewood, Immigrant Son Brewery planning spring opening

“We’re opening a 10-barrel system brewery that’s going to have 20 taps and a full-service kitchen,” said Revy, a 1990 Lakewood High School graduate. “We’re focusing both on the craft beer experience, as well as the culinary experience.”

In addition to offering its initial four Immigrant Son Brewery flagship beers – an IPA, a saison, an English pub style ale and an American pilsner -- the bar will have lagers and pilsners on tap along with seasonal beers.

“Our head brewer is Cara Baker, who is of award-winning fame,” Revy said. “Many people in Northeast Ohio are very familiar with her and her work. I’m very excited to give her the opportunity to make some great beers for Immigrant Son Brewery.”

Jeffrey Stern had Tom Lix on The Lay of the Land podcast last year. It’s a great story! That said, my bartender wife does not give high marks to their flagship whiskey. But they do make some good products - they did a branded bourbon with Youngstown boxing legend Boom Boom Mancini that is quite good ( Boom Boom Bourbon). I’m sure they also have some other good stuff. And I find their process fascinating.

Unfortunately have to concur. Their product has improved since first debuting, and I LOVE the bottle design, but at the end of the day there’s much better whiskey/bourbon on the market at the price points that Cleveland competes in. To me, the youth of the product always seems to come through. I’m sure they will keep on refining their very innovative process, however.

The irony is, 10 years on or so from their debut now, and Cleveland could have some very compelling traditionally aged whiskies.

I'm not a huge whiskey drinker but their whiskeys seem awfully harsh to me. Purists will say there's no shortcuts for proper aging. They seem to be right.

Yep. Someone gifted me a bottle a year or two back. It was dreadful. Says a lot that most of their own posts on their website are concerned with how to cook with it. I’m sure it will continue to improve though.

After trying Cleveland Whiskey's flagship whiskey, I unfortunately have to agree with the above comments. It's not quite dreadful, but there are plenty of better bourbons at the price point. That said I also tried one of their Cleveland Underground varieties (the apple wood one) and I thought that was significantly better, so they seem to be moving in the right direction!

I'm really happy about their success though, and I think they'll be a great anchor to the Flats South development! Can't wait to see what they build there, and I'll definitely visit when it opens!
