New co-op brewpub seeking charter members

DAYTON — Founding members of the planned Fifth Street Brewpub at 1600 E. Fifth St. in the St. Anne’s Hill neighborhood are seeking charter members who would pay $100 to be part-owner of a cooperatively run brewpub.

....for those of you familiar with Dayton or who have been following my neighborhood history posts from years back, this is the old American Saloon AND an adjacent building that used to be a shoe repair shop back in ye olde days.

...and, for those of you who know me as Mr. Negative when it comes to Dayton, I put in my $$$ and am a charter member in the co-op!  I figure I'd do a little bit to try to save one of the empty buildings I took pix of...

Toxic Brewing to build production brewery along Great Miami River

Toxic Brew Company in Dayton’s Oregon District revealed today it has purchased riverfront land north of downtown to build a brewery and tap room that will boost production tenfold and pave the way for canning and bottling for retail sales.

The project includes plans for a tap room that will offer visitors a view of the Great Miami River to accompany their brew, founder Shane Juhl told us. The brewery also could host occasional festivals, Juhl said.

The project cost will likely exceed $1 million, Juhl said. That represents a significant investment in Old North Dayton, which has struggled in recent years with vacant industrial and commercial sites.

Dayton brewery makes 1850s-style sour beer as public watches

DAYTON — For a taste of the 1850s, there’s no place on earth like Carillon Historical Park. ... The park and museum just outside downtown Dayton might be the only place in the country where visitors can watch ale being brewed using historically accurate, mid-19th-century methods and then, most importantly, buy a glass or growler and try the product.

But it's Carillon Brewing Co., on the edge of the park grounds, that makes the venue unique.  The craft brewery offers food and drink prepared in the style of the 1850s.  The star of the show is the beer, brewed over wood fires with historically accurate equipment.

The two-story production area is set up as a kind of stage, with each step visible from the brewery's restaurant.  Patrons can watch as employees and volunteers feed the fires, ladle the brew and fill the huge barrels where the product ferments and ages.

Now, with Devil Wind and Yellow Springs Brewery, there will be a couple breweries connected by about an hour of trail-riding on a bike. If someone opened another brewery around the midway point, it would be about a perfect mix of riding and drinking for a spring/fall outing. 8)
