UFC targeting Cleveland for Stipe Miocic's first title defense

The UFC is targeting a September card in Cleveland, Ohio, for heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic to make his first title defense.

The UFC has never been in Cleveland before, but the city has long thirsted for a show on their home turf — especially since several high profile stars coming from the city and surrounding areas, including Miocic, Jessica Eye and Cody Garbrandt.

^ That's not only a big gift for Miocic, but good business sense too.

What’s it worth to Stipe Miocic as UFC heavyweight champ? Millions

Stipe Miocic now owns the title of "Baddest Man on the Planet."

Miocic is a hot ticket in UFC, and the organization is taking advantage. On May 25, UFC president Dana White made the quick decision to host Miocic's first title defense in his heavyweight champ's hometown at Quicken Loans Arena for UFC 203.

"Everything the UFC does is strategic," said Kalikas. "They know coming to Cleveland will be a gold mine for them."

"Stipe's marketability is at an all-time high," said a source with UFC. "His success has helped with bringing an event to Cleveland."

Check it out, Cody Garbrandt from Uhrichsville, Ohio won his big UFC fight tonight and told the reporter he wants to fight in Cleveland on Sept 10 before Stipe Miocic.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – According to figures released by the Ohio Athletic Commission, Stipe Miocic could pocket over a million dollars when it's all said and done for his victory at UFC 203.

The Ohio native and UFC Heavyweight Champion knocked out Alistair Overeem during their main event fight at The Q on Saturday. The Commission says Miocic was paid $600,000 for the fight from the UFC.

That gets added to $90,000 in bonuses Miocic has already earned for his performance. He should get a couple more bonuses, including knockout of the night, when UFC reveals its full numbers soon.

Stipe Miocic's win at UFC 220 cements him as the GOAT

BOSTON, Mass. - There's no doubting it anymore. Stipe Miocic is the greatest heavyweight in UFC history.

On Saturday night, the UFC Heavyweight Champ from Cleveland successfully defended his title for a record third consecutive time. Miocic defeated Francis Ngannou in the main event at UFC 220 in Boston.

Heading into the fight, all the talk was about Ngannou's power, which had laid waste to the likes of Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski in devastating fashion. Ngannou showed that power during the first round of Saturday's fight. But Miocic weathered the storm.

Interesting read.  Stipe Miocic is the first person to successfully defend the world Heavyweight title three consecutive times, yet UFC hardly gives him any promotion.  Other fighters continue to get way more hype and media attention on the national scene.

How one of the best feuds in the UFC can make Stipe Miocic more marketable

BOSTON - Stipe Miocic is known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet."

He's certainly not the first heavyweight champion to lay claim to that nickname. If you type the phrase into Google, you'll get the Wikipedia bio of Mike Tyson as well as suggestions for Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather and Evander Holyfield.

Miocic is obviously not as well known as the other men who have held that nickname, but he certainly backed it up and cemented his place in UFC history when he dominated No. 1 contender Francis Ngannou, who was the favorite in Vegas, through five rounds at UFC 220. In the process, Miocic became the first heavyweight champion in UFC history to successfully defend the title three consecutive times.

The problem for Miocic and the UFC is few outside the world of mixed martial arts know who Miocic is.

That probably had a lot to do with the perception that the UFC and Dana White, in particular, wanted Ngannou to beat Miocic. This wasn't simply the perception from outsiders but from Miocic himself, as he heard White say that Ngannou "looks like the heavyweight champion of the world" and "a rock star globally" in the lead-up to the fight.

Probably due to rampant anti-Croatian discrimination

I guess that for a lot of people, it just doesn't make any sense that there could be a White heavy-weight champion of the world. That' is what this sounds like. Has nothing to do with being Croatian.

He's not the sexy guy to write about.  Ngannou is a monster and definitely sparks global interest.  Stipe looks like he will get his butt whooped each time, being a pale, puddly Cleveland-er...but he is so strategically and technically strong.  He really is one of a kind.  Media doesnt like to glorify Cleveland talent.Nothing new here...writers spend the entire sports seasons talking about Clevelands weaknesses...If Stipe was from the Bronx, i promise he would be all over the tabloids

That was sort of tongue-in-cheek, being half-Croatian myself

I can confirm that I had no idea who this guy was til like three days ago when a friend of mine started talking about some UFC guy from Cleveland.

I didn't know of him, either lol.

Are you from Cleveland/NEO? There's a lot of Eastern European ancestry up there.

Is there anywhere on the internet to see a replay of this fight? Tried youtube with no luck, just highlights. Nevermind found one!

Wow... that other guy is a lot bigger, too. He has to have at least 15 pounds on Miocic. Possibly 30 lbs. In no-holds-barred fighting, that seems to be absolutely no indication of who is going to win. Strategy is much more relevant.

UFC is the most entertaining blood sport due to it's lack of limitations/rules. Boxing is incredibly boring yet people will pay $100 for PPV to watch McGregor and Mayweather strictly punch each other either in the face or kidney. I never understood that.

Whoa.

Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier set for champion vs. champion superfight at UFC 226; will also coach TUF 27

For the first time in the history of The Ultimate Fighter, two current champions, in two different weight classes, will serve as head coaches and also fight at season’s end.

The UFC has tapped heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier as the next head coaches of the reality show, the UFC announced Friday. Filming is scheduled to commence next week.

Following the conclusion of the show, the duo are scheduled to fight at UFC 226 on July 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for Miocic’s heavyweight title. Should he win, Cormier would become just the second fighter in UFC history to be a champion in two different weight classes at the same time, and the fifth fighter in total to be a two-division UFC champion.
