A presidential bar and more: Cleveland for conventioneers

By BETH J. HARPAZ

CLEVELAND (AP) — Conventioneers, political geeks and others heading to the GOP convention in Cleveland, take note: With seven presidents born in Ohio, there's a lot of history here.

But what might be the most intriguing presidential-themed site in Cleveland isn't a museum or historic home. Nope. It's a dive bar named for an obscure president who was actually born in New York. It's called the Millard Fillmore Presidential Library, but the only political memorabilia on display is of the goofball variety — like a photo of Mount Rushmore with Fillmore's face plastered in. The drink menu includes a Fillmore Manhattan and beers named Fireside Chat, 21st Amendment and Jackie O's Firefly Amber.

Elsewhere, the Cleveland area has plenty of bonafide political sites — like the James A. Garfield Memorial, honoring the Ohio-born 20th president, and the First Ladies National Historic Site 60 miles away in Canton. But for GOP delegates and anybody else needing a place to kick back when the Republicans come to town to pick their presidential nominee July 18-21, the Millard Fillmore Presidential Library might just be the place.

In short, avoid downtown during the RNC!

Had to do a double-take here...you're promoting CLE pointers to RNC visitors-delegates?

Is their money not green & legal? Spend it here, then GTFO.

After what just happened in Dallas tonight, I wouldn't go near downtown Cleveland for the RNC.

Definitely not good. I can't imagine being in downtown Dallas right now with an active shooting attack situation basically totally un-contained...

That's the whole point, having CLE make money and being showcased, yet you advocated that assassinating Trump would be ''altruistic violence''.  Does your ''altruistic violence'' apply to delegates, visitors to the Convention, and other innocent bystanders that may get caught up in it?

After the Dallas domestic terror attack, Cleveland may see all kinds of your ''altruistic violence''.  Careful what you wish for.

I never advocated for Trump's assassination. I once thought I would welcome it if it happened, but not anymore.

I responded to the rest of your post here:

EDIT: by the way, Trump isn't a Republican. Not sure why he or his supporters are coming to Cleveland in a couple of weeks, but I'll take their money while here, just as I would take the money of any other convention of people I don't agree with. Yes, GOP, kindly transfer your money to this city, long a Democratic stronghold!

I'm pretty sure that the City of Cleveland along with the federal government (FBI, Secret Service, TSA, NSA) have been doing a lot of planning to make sure that this doesn't happen, here. Unfortunately, I can't think of any terrorist attack that was actually PREVENTED by these government agencies before they actually happen. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the government has prevented a lot of terrorist attacks and they just don't give it any sort of publicity and there's numerous unsung heroes out there, but I personally doubt it.

To me, living in Cleveland during the RNC is just going to be one big headache. The classrooms at my school downtown were rented out as office space to journalists and we just found out where our classes are going to be held for the week (clear across town, which is going to be a headache for a lot of my classmates.) I'd imagine there's going to be a lot of transit police and/or TSA agents at bus stops and train stations, looking for anything suspicious and looking for any reason to search people without probable cause which is ultimately going to hold up people or even hold up trains and buses, making those who rely on public transit late for work/appointments, etc.

I'm really not excited about the RNC being in Cleveland. I really understand the economic impact it will have on the city and why some might think it's important, but at what cost? Is it actually beneficial to the city when you're paying so much to beef up your police force or whatever else the city is going to have to spend money on to accommodate the RNC? That's aside from the fact that people aren't even going to feel safe here (especially since we're having the RNC in probably one of the most liberal/democratic cities in America where we already a fairly high crime rate and trigger-happy police. It just seems like a recipe for disaster. I would have much preferred the RNC being in a different city. If it were up to me, political parties would have to pay for all the extra security. Our two-party system is ridiculous anyway. I really don't see why anyone else should have to, though I'm sure if Cleveland wasn't accommodating, some other city would have no problem hosting it and dealing with the headache.

Also, if you live in NE Ohio right now, I would be very careful about what you say on the internet or on your phone regarding assasinations, even if it's said in jest. Since a terrorist attack is likely in Cleveland during the RNC, the NSA is probably zooming in on what all is being said, locally. I may sound like a conspiracy nut but after Snowden blew the whistle, I don't think it's too far fetched and I don't see any reason to take a chance on that.

Could everyone stop with the doom and gloom predictions for the convention. It's really getting to be annoying. We get it already. You all sound like those cities  kc/dallas/cbus that were not chosen and are basically wishing bad things will happen.

No, I don't think I will and how dare you accuse people of wishing bad things would happen to Cleveland simply because we're expressing our concerns of what could play out? This is coming from someone with the username "freethink"?

After what's happened in Dallas, Orlando and hell...every other tragic event that has popped up on my news feed and will probably continue to pop up in my news feed on d@mn near a daily basis, I think I have every right to express my feelings and concerns for the safety of myself and other Clevelanders. I didn't vote for a high-profile political convention in my city with its main attraction being one of the most controversial political candidates in the history of the United States.

You're a bit hysterical, don't you think? It's like when I lived in NYC during the attacks of 9/11 and afterward a lot of people I knew asked if I was going to move out of NY. My answer was, "Why would I move? NYC is the safest place in the world at this moment with all of the increased security."  Same with Cleveland. It will be the most secure place in the world for a few days. You conspiracy theorists and paranoids need to step back and take a breath.

BTW, the point of this thread when I created it is to provide some insights for Cleveland RNC visitors on things to do, see and even avoid while here. Let's leave the politics and terrorism discussions for other threads. Urban Ohio forumers have knowledge about Cleveland things to see, do and avoid that many others do not. Let's show what we know and be helpful to visitors.

I live near the Filmore and my brother has been there from time to time.  It seems like a nice enough place but I wouldn't call it a must see for the delegates.  W. 25th moreso.
