This will be about 2000 ft. tall.  With the roof top at about 1,500 ft. and the spire reaching the rest.  It will be one of the tallest bldgs. in the world......5th according to skyscraperpage.com if all the other proposed bldgs. are built across the world.

an anorexic Turning Torso.

(not to say i don't like it, because i do)

Dubai Midwest?

I think it could have done without the pointless pointy spire at the top, along with alot of other buildings too. Being the tallest is nothing more than a pointless penis competition

its amazing.

It's definantly different than anything else I've seen in the States... I like it.

congrads on the approval...

wow, most of the complaints towards this building sound exactly like the people talking in opposition to Museum Plaza in Louisville....strange

i found these on a website about fordham

This building is absolutely ugly! It looks like a big drill bit pointed at the sky, or like one great lightning rod. I love Chicago with all my heart, but this building will be a disgrace to the city if it is built.

Comparing this tower to Museum Plaza is not right necro. Although this tower is not liked by all, this tower has a much higher approval rating than Museum Plaza. This tower is a beautiful twisting glass structure as MP is controversial and can be compared to Ren. Cen. in Detroit.

the critisicm is the same as museum plazas.

Most of the comments are positive for this tower with an exeption of a few. Musuem tower was bashed from the jump.

any news on this thing?

150-story skyscraper could become tallest in U.S.

POSTED: 2:35 p.m. EDT, April 20, 2007

Story Highlights

• Chicago's planning board OKs nation's tallest building

• Chicago Spire would be 2,000 feet tall, 150 stories

• Lakefront office building has twisting design, would include 1,200 residences

• Chicago's Sears Tower is currently tallest, at 1,451 feet

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- The city's planning board has endorsed a proposal for a twisting lakefront tower that would become the nation's tallest building.  With Thursday's approval from the Chicago Plan Commission, the design and site plan for the 2,000-foot Chicago Spire goes to the city zoning committee next week.  The 150-story tower, which would feature 1,200 residences, would unseat Chicago's 1,451-foot Sears Tower as the tallest U.S. building.  The Chicago Spire was designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Spanish-born architect known for designing the Milwaukee Art Museum addition and the Athens Olympic sports complex.

hubris

Can't that be said for all skyscrapers though?

The Tip Drill...err...Drill Bit is being built, eh?

This makes me think of how tall is too tall? Imagine trying to get out of there in case of a fire  :-P Or having to catch 18 different elevators to get to your pent house suite. That said I will definitely be visiting the observation floor if there is one.

I really don't like it. Can't Calatrava design something that doesn't twist like that?

I wonder how big the head of the screw is on the other side of the Earth?  nixweiss.gif

Not sure if I'm in love with the look yet but there's something very compelling about any tall building.

it's no 'The Illinois'

not liking that thing- seems like it would be a nice fit for Hong Kong though. Now the Illinois...if that were sized down to 2,000ft that would work in Chicagos skyline- kinda would look like the Sears tower on roids.

FLW was too awesome. That building looks just as modern today as it did then.

What? You're saying a mile is too tall?

This makes me think of how tall is too tall? Imagine trying to get out of there in case of a fire  :-P

That's why it twists! In case of fire, you can just pop out a window, take a hose from a sink to wet the way and you can ride the 2000+ft. slip and side all the way down to safety! I'm sure that would work  :-)

Is there a physical reason for the counterclockwise twist? If it were a drill bit or a screw, the twist would run in the opposite direction. That thing is left-handed. :?

Ehhh....

And I usually like Calatrava, too.

I love that Chicago (developers) want to show the world that the U.S is not out when building bigger. I just do not like this design in the Chicago context. I agree with LittleItalyCleveland, it would look great in one of the Pacific Rim cities - it just does not fit here.

I really don't like it. Can't Calatrava design something that doesn't twist like that?

yeah for real. all i got is this apt tower in the ny seaport he designed. its only 800+ft. i'm not sure it will be built as last i heard the owner has few or no buyers for the mega $$$ apts.

i think you can make a case for them being necessary in places like manhattan and hong kong, but they're trully just pure hubris in the chicagos and dubais.

Chicago already has a huge, dense and dynamic downtown. I don't think it matters how crazy their designs are anymore. I love the building. Chicago already has a skyscraper modeled after a vagina, who cares if they have on that looks extremely phallic? I think this would give Chicago more world-wide recognition. Lets hope this thing has an observation deck :-D

i always felt that the areas around Chicago's high rise residential buildings (especially to the immediate south and west of Millenium Park) were pretty dead all things considered. I much prefer the northern neighborhoods to the north of Lincoln Park. There is something to be said for neighborhoods where you have to park on the street and walk to your flat (if you drive at all).

I love the north side of chicago!!!! It's definitely the nicest part but I'd probably live in one of the up and coming neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Belmont, Pilsen, etc.

Pilsen, the home of Cristo Rey Academy!! The most innovative inner city school model to come around since who knows when.

Inner city schools... innovation? In Cincinnati, innovation is achieved by adding "university" at the end of the name of the highschool.

Wicker Park is amazing, as is Bucktown. Probably my favorite areas.

I think skyscrapers will one day be so large that the footprint will take up half of the Earth, and you will literally be able to travel into outer space just by hopping on a jet-propelled elevator. It will be a thing of amazement.

All I know is I wouldn't want to live in it.  The creative side of me would love to live in a penthouse in the tallest building, but in my rational side knows I'm not comfortable living higher than the 25 floor - 30 floor max.

Seriously?? I might never wanna go to Chicago again.

I actually think it's a really nice design. Phallic, yes. But it's definitely unique.

I really wish it was smaller. I think it's going to stick out so much against their skyline. I'm not sure if that's good or not.

I just showed that image to a female acquaintance of mine.

Her comment:

"Hmmm, reminds me of a boy I used to date."

He was grossly tall and spirally?

In Florida Guy's image, what's the deal with the cable stay bridge in the foreground? Is that in the works as well or did someone just think it would just look nice in the rendering?

I think the design just changed again.  I think its got a point on it now.

Does anyone know how long this will take to build?

hey look -- they are starting to build it (6/30/7):
