Hmmm, you'd have a chance for a view of downtown from the third floor city facing apartments (at least until Metro is wrapped up). I wonder if they were waiting for revenue to climb at their event center before moving on apartments (as of now, it seems like there's something in there maybe 4-6x a month?), they've got a light on on the third floor, but other than that it seems stripped to the studs.

Here's the YMCA site

Glad to see that project going vertical.  It sat for so long I was starting to fear it may be dead.

My wife took this photo yesterday as I drove north on Pearl/West 25th. This is the new Emerald Alliance XI housing at the site of the old Brooklyn YMCA, being built by CHN Housing and Eden Cleveland....

This is an exciting under-reported project. Eden is such a great organization and providing a service for which there is an unfortunate growing need for... and they have some of the nicest people working for them!

Looks like Dollar General is DOA. As an Old Brooklynite I'm okay with this.

^ Yay! At first I was indifferent about the DG proposal since what is being replaced isn't anything spectacular; however, I just drove through here this past weekend and changed my mind. It may not be the prettiest collection of buildings, but is has a kind of rambling industrial complex vibe that may prove more marketable as OB continues to evolve.  I think we will be thanking ourselves we didn't allow a tear-down here in the near future.

I wonder if they can change their proposal up to try and force it in. DG doesn't seem like the type of business that's going to give up without a fight....or just move to like Brooklyn Centre or something.

I would not be surprised to see them take over the nearby Family Dollar or Walgreen's instead (This is pure speculation; I have no evidence that either will close).... I'm still surprised that the Family Dollar on Broadview and Pearl has managed to stay open despite there being one opening in the former Aldi's on Pearl, just north of the bridge... (I know the stores serve two separate neighborhoods but I'm still surprised sales are high enough to justify keeping both open).  (The More you know: the Family Dollar on Broadview and Pearl was previously a movie theater that was demolished in the late 80s/early 90s with community support because it showed 'adult' films; then was a Discount Drug Mart for about 15 years until Family Dollar moved in there in the late 00s...

Also there was a proposal in the mid 70 (before the library was built) for State Road to meet a less sharper angle to Pearl (the road would have been where the library is ; I'll try to dig up the map...)

You tear an entire structure down based off what they showed?! You could've petitioned for them to be more family friendly or simply, idk, CHANGED THE USE OF THE BUILDING.

Sorry for the bit of blur, everyone was stopped for a passing ambulance. Tried to get a quick one before traffic picked back up. The Housing First building is going up pretty quick on the old YMCA site thanks to a mild winter!

I keep meaning to snag one in the other direction. It's cool seeing this as well as the crane/elevator shafts going up at metro. Next time anyone is on the Pearl road bridge by the zoo you'll see what I mean.

Heck, as I type this I can see the crane lights blinking at metro. Such a cool time to be a Clevelander!

Yes, two cranes on the westside/not downtown! If Brooklyn Center can get a few more of these sized projects on Pearl or Denison home prices are going skyrocket.

Lol I only give that reaction because I'm trying to buy soon and ob is the only place where prices still seem fair by cle standards.

Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick reopens

Posted May 19, 2020

By Anne Nickoloff, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland’s Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick reopened for business on Tuesday, May 19 with social distancing guidelines and coronavirus restrictions in place.

The museum, located at 2155 Broadview Road, currently only allows six visitors inside at a time, and requires all visitors to wear face masks while inside the building, according to museum director Steven Intermill.

That is pretty underwhelming.

Although near Pearl/Broadview, it is not the most pedestrian friendly location, so I think anything going there is going to end up with a fair bit of parking.  That said, it would be nice if they could make the buildings wider so that they covered more street frontage.

I think Pearl/Broadview is quite pedestrian friendly.  It has a small town downtown vibe that I have always liked.  It's a shame that they aren't going with something a little more dense for this increasingly desirable location that looks out over the valley.

I agree it is pedestrian friendly overall, but that location is only really accessible by walking from one direction and there are other parking lots that need to be crossed before getting to it.  But I agree, something that has more street frontage would be better.

It is a bummer, but better than a junk yard and ice cream shop that an investor is squatting on. I'm in total agreement with y'all. It's a weird spot but it deserves better than this.

A permit was uploaded today for converting 4835 Broadview Rd, an empty former nursing home, into 12 apartment units. Nothing huge, but it's great to see work like this happening in Old Brooklyn.Screenshot_20200618-102941.thumb.png.b2e4a41ded1045559d007c34e3b1ab42.png

Cleveland Metroparks approves plan to turn Old Brooklyn landfill into 26-acre park with Towpath link

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Metroparks will soon plug a major gap in access to the regional Towpath Trail from the city’s West Side by creating a new park atop a landfill south of Big Creek in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood.

Metroparks Commissioners voted Thursday to spend $696,000 to build a trailhead at the landfill with a 16-space parking lot off Pearl Road at Henninger Road, plus a half-mile trail that will create a stronger connection between the Towpath and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The new park will be called Brighton Park in honor of a historic name for the section of Old Brooklyn in which it’s located.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

This Old Brooklynite approves! It's an interesting spot to walk around, going to be strange seeing it turned into park land BUT it'll be awesome.

There are some homeless folks in there so I hope they're able to find them alternative housing....maybe across the bridge at the new housing?

Edit: thanks @Boomerang_Brian for reading the article for me, I jumped the gun! Lol

The article does actually address that towards the end - basically says the homeless who live there will be relocated with the help of charitable organizations “in a process that the planners said would be dignified and compassionate.”

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

This area has been reclaimed by nature in such contrast to City View - looks as lush as Dike 14/Lakefront nature preserve. Another great effort by Cleveland Metroparks. Nice to see the addition of 1000 tree plantings, too.

Also, glad you could get the full-size image on that map, @Boomerang_Brian - it's functionally useless at the size they embed it into the article!

Edit: I also just love the amount of trail connections that are coming into play all at once. Really makes the regional trail network, along with the Emerald necklace, that much more robust as a community asset.

All I did was click on the picture in the hopes of getting a direct link to just embed the picture. That didn’t work, but I’m glad you found the link useful.

Sorry, I meant that Cleveland.com provides the image in their article at such a small size with no intentional way of letting users on their site get the full-sized, readable version. The direct link you provided was perfect! I assumed you used the bookmarklet I wrote to get the full-sized version, and wanted to give props to you for making sure everyone on the forum could see the full size.

I'm sure some people like the convenience of the embedded version you just added to your post. Just having the full-sized version for our community when it is otherwise inaccessible is what matters - link or embed ?

Pretty neat idea/news, even something as simple as putting some decorative screen on that parking garage would be great.

That's a pretty nice looking building, for permanent supportive housing at least.

Ugh, doesn't look like Dollar General wants to go quietly. This is an email I got just now from head of our CDC regarding it:

Quote

Good afternoon,

As a previous attendee of a community meeting on the proposed Dollar General at West 56th & Memphis, we invite you to a virtual community meeting to solicit feedback on an updated proposal.

In June we shared information about the moratorium passed by Cleveland City Council on small box retail stores that we believe prevented the proposed Dollar General at West 56th and Memphis from proceeding. The development group with Dollar General is pushing forward and is requesting a review by the Cleveland Planning Commission based off the timing of their plan submission. Updated renderings show new materials to the outside of the building and a verbal commitment to including produce in the store.

Please see the attached flyer, and register at the link below if you’d like to provide feedback. OBCDC and Cleveland City Council will provide information on the project status and collect resident input for sharing with the Planning Commission. Myself and Lucas Reeve ([email protected]) are happy to answer any questions in advance. Thank you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
You are invited to a Zoom meeting.
When: Sep 17, 2020 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Register in advance for this meeting:
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
Not ideal - but I have to say, that is the nicest looking Dollar General I have ever seen.
^And it's currently an empty grass lot right?
FWIW this area of Memphis is pretty ugly and beyond redeeming.
I only half read the email and DG must've shifted to this neck of the woods after intense pushback for their desired location (junkyard between State/Pearl). Either way, despite if it looks nice or not, I really don't think the hood needs another dollar store.
Whoa! Beyond redemption? I mean, it could use some TLC, but it’s not that bad. There is a lot of nice residential in that area, inclusive of W56. Ridge north of Memphis is a different story, though...
I had a conversation this weekend with someone I trust who told me that property value in and around Old Brookyn (he stated within a mile of Broadview and Pearl) will be up 40-60% by 2025. He and a couple partners have bought up land in the area through shell LLCs and have two particularly ambitious projects planned.
He and his associates are particularly focused on Old Brooklyn because he says:
1. It has great bones for a walkable CBD, and
2. It has the lot size, yardage, etc. to convince a lot of middle to upper middle class families to stay in the city who would've otherwise planned on moving to the suburbs.
I found #2 particularly interesting because my wife and I had discussed that very point back in Many. I don't know much more than that - but I thought it was worthy of a share.
^Good to hear. What kind of "ambitious projects" are planned, if you able to share?
SHHH DON'T TELL MY LANDLORD. SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. lol
But I've thought this for a long while in the fourish years I've lived here. It's got a lot of untapped potential and some great bones.
Edit: wth was I saying "untapped potential and a lot of potential" lol
Also worth noting, the Emerald Alliance XI building (former YMCA location) looks to have some folks moved in. Was at the crappy (but cheap) gas station across the way the other night and lights were on and looked like folks were in there.
I can't say much right now - as I probably shouldn't have even posted it on here lol. But what I know right now is that there's a group that's been buying housing and retail in the neighborhood in chunks via shell companies over the last 4 years, with a plan to bring a lot of higher-end housing to market simultaneously (higher end meaning $225k - $300k) and align walkable restaurants, shops, bars, etc. to open within a similar timeframe.
FWIW a couple years ago I was hanging at OB Cheese and speaking with Michael and he had hinted at some big transformative plans/restaurants, like big (he was really excited hah). Either way, he was tight lipped about it and I doubt he was talking about Irie (no offense to them). I'll see if I can do some sleuthing haha.
I haven’t heard anything as concrete but someone I close with who is a career house flipper among other things believes that Old Brooklyn is next and that they have a great Neighborhood Development Board (or whatever you call it, the term is alluding me).
