Do you know if there are any more buildings set to rise for this dev, or are those the last ones?

I drove as far back as I could get today.  There's multiple buildings toward the back still under construction, but if I had to guess, I would assume those are the last ones.

Glass Axis Gearing Up for Move to South Side

“Glass Axis has been an anchor in the Franklinton Arts District since 2014, when a move to 610 W. Town St., provided an expansion into a larger space, allowing for the growth of the comprehensive glass-making facility to include molten glass, casting, fusing, neon, stained glass, cold working, and torch working.

The potential redevelopment of the one-story building at 610 W. Town St. led to the Glass Axis board and staff to decide that remaining in the space was not the best decision.

“Preliminary plans showed Glass Axis being a part of this new building  space, taking up the street level space, but with overall decreased square footage,” said Reed. A studio as specialized as Glass Axis needs special accommodations, and once those were presented to the building’s development team, “it quickly became apparent that Glass Axis could not afford to stay in a lease scenario in this new building space, even considering downsizing and working with less square footage,” said Reed.

In the summer of 2023, pending board approval and final paperwork, Glass Axis will move into 2117 S. High St., sharing a building with custom manufacturing company Regalia Metal Products. Regalia’s president, Ken Gray owns the building and will be leasing a little over 13,000 square feet of space to Glass Axis.“

We live in Merion Village.  You can definitely feel the momentum building in multiple different areas of the south side now, even compared to just a year or two ago!

Other side of Parsons for us. There’s so much construction/rehabs/etc. I love it.

This is basically how most arts districts work. Artist move into undesirable areas, make it great, developers and money come in and make it a hip place. The art studios can’t afford it anymore, so move to the next place, and the cycle continues.

it is sad and hopefully Franklinton keeps their arts more than the short north, but this is how areas become popular and how nodes pop up around town.

Not sure about the land purchase, but the article does mention an easement and that the intersection improvement is currently in the plan phase. The intersection definitely needs work, I think.

“Davis said plans include a 30-foot easement, as Columbus is exploring improvements at the intersection of South High Street and Thurman Avenue to make that intersection safer. Those plans are still at the traffic study phase.”

Found a little information on the upcoming South High at Greenlawn/Thurman project...

INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS-

DESCRIPTION AND BENEFITS:

This project consists of geometric and mobility improvements to the intersections of Greenlawn Avenue at S. Front Street and S. High Street at Greenlawn Avenue/Thurman Avenue. The road alignment will be improved so the intersection isn’t offset and motorists will be able to turn left onto High Street from Thurman Ave or Greenlawn Ave. This project will include traffic signal improvements, addition of a shared use path, sidewalk, and signal interconnect. This project will also include incidental improvements such as drainage, traffic control, sediment and erosion control, waterline relocation, and maintenance of traffic.

ESTIMATED SCHEDULE:

PHASE:   START   /FINISH

Design: Spring 2023 /Spring 2024

Right-of-Way: Late 2023 /Late 2024

Utility Relocations: Summer 2024  /Early 2025

This seems to be progressing rather quickly now. Hope they find good tenants for the buildings!

Crews started tearing down the former church at the corner of Markison and Washington today.

More housing will be built in its place:

The development would require the demolition of the former Washington Avenue United Methodist Church, although its bell tower would be preserved. A parking lot on the south is also part of the development site."

I accidentally drove by this today, and I was not expecting the amount of activity that was there. I also always forget how huge the site is. Hoping it can land some good tenants who will pay decent wages. I’m excited about all of the activity on the South Side.

Also, an update on the Freebis Ave townhomes: the parking lot is mostly gone, and digging has begun!

I like to play the disc golf course Area 51 down in Obetz a lot this time of year and I usually drive down Parsons to get there. I swear from one weekend to the next this site went from smoothed over dirt to having giant walls erected. Was an involuntary "holy sh*t" type moment haha. They are moving incredibly quick!

Have you seen it from 104 lately?

(if you're headed west on 104, on your right, just before you exit at S High St)

I have not! I stopped using that route to leave the area once I learned I can go Parsons to 71 to go home (or more accurately Parsons to German Village to get lunch after my round). I'll make a point of going back home that way next time I'm out there, which will probably be tomorrow or Saturday.

As I'm sure you know- 104 goes right over the property- so you definitely get a decent look at it- especially when you're headed west.

I just went through there about 10 minutes ago, and now they're digging some huge trench, something they hadn't even started this morning.
