Posted October 25, 20168 yr Over a year ago I went to Seattle for a little vacation and I'm finally posting the pictures I took while I was there. I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there last year, but I had a wonderful time and really loved the city and wanted to share some of the photos from my trip. Part 1 Last year I was still working at a non-profit and not making much, so I minimized costs as much as I could on this trip, which included staying at a hostel. Although sharing a room with complete strangers isn't always the most ideal situation, I had a great time and the free breakfast was a welcomed amenity. Not to mention, Pikes Place was right out the front door, which is where this little photo tour begins... Part 2 Part 3
October 25, 20168 yr Nice set... I spent my one and only week in Seattle over a decade ago during the summer. Oddly enough, it didn't rain a drop. Seattle is a very beautiful, bustling city which reminds me of San Francisco because of the hills. It falls just short of SF in terms of sheer beauty and excitement, but Seattle is certainly no slouch and, imho, often underrated as a borderline world class city.
October 25, 20168 yr Sounds like you stayed at the same youth hostel I did. I had somebody in the room who wouldn't shut up about conspiracy theories. DT Seattle has a colder and more corporate feel to it than I was expecting. Luckily the streets aren't as narrow as they appear and so they're going to be building a surface streetcar there with dedicated lanes. I was there before the light rail service began in the transit tunnel, and if ST3 passes there will be a second subway tunnel beneath a parallel street in about ten years.
October 26, 20168 yr Great shots. Downtown Seattle is great. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 26, 20168 yr Nice! BTW: Has UO ever had a Seattle thread that did not include the Showgirls marquee?
October 27, 20168 yr clvlndr[/member] - Thanks! And I was surprised by the weather too. It was beautiful for most of my trip, although it did rain a couple of times. And I've never been to SF, so I'm not sure how it compares, but Seattle was beautiful and I had a great time...a little too much of a good time my last night there, but worth it. jmecklenborg[/member] - My roommates were pretty quiet and I got along with them. We actually went out together a couple of times. And their transit, including their bus transit, was amazing and part of the reason why I loved the city so much. When I was there only one of the streetcars had opened, I think the second one opened up a week after my trip, but the light rail line was super convenient. MyTwoSense[/member] - Who are you? Oh wait, you're that strange man who lives in Shaker Circle surrounded by an absurd amount of shoes. ColDayMan[/member] and UrbanSurfin[/member] - Thanks!
October 27, 20168 yr Yes only the SLUT streetcar was running when I was there, there were "light rail coming 2009" signs up. I flew out of SEATAC and got there on a Seattle city bus which went through the Boeing complex, which was interesting to see. Now of course somebody would take the light rail line to get there. We flew over Mt. Ranier on takeoff, which was really impressive, after not having seen it during my time in the city. I got the impression that Seattle's residential neighborhoods get pretty low-density outside of downtown pretty quickly. Hills you can see from downtown are dotted by houses on 1/4 acre lots, not the row houses that cling to San Francisco's hillsides or ring the downtowns of Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. So it's pretty car-dominated outside of the areas within walking distance of downtown or maybe out to about 2 miles. So combined with the growth and the area's very complicated layout, traffic is pretty horrendous.
