Posted December 15, 20168 yr http://www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2016-north-america-airport-satisfaction-study CVG = the good CMH = the bad CLE = the ugly On the plus side, both CMH and CLE completed several million dollars worth of cosmetic upgrades to their respective terminals this year. Hopefully that translates to some improved rankings in 2017. CVG remains a gem. :-D
December 16, 20168 yr To me, it's clear Indianapolis is the best "midsized" airport in the country but I don't get Portland's ranking. I flew in-and-out of there in October and while it was okay, I wouldn't say it was better than, say, Seattle, Denver, or SLC. December 16, 20168 yr I find Nashville to be an absolute hole. Not sure what criteria rated them higher
December 16, 20168 yr Yeah, Indianapolis is gorgeous....but Eppley in Omaha being so high? Now that I don't get at all. The only thing they had going for them was the Omaha Steaks stand.
December 16, 20168 yr Yawn. Can we just find this thread from last year and change all the 2015s to 2016s? I'll say I fly all the time and CLE isn't that bad. You'll say CLE sucks. Someone else will say the only reason PDF is rated highly is because hipsters liked the old carpet. I'll say - take your dumb comment to the hipster thread! Someone else will say we should get rid of Burke. That guy will say CLE upgrades were a waste of money and it doesn't look that different. That girl will say CLE was better when Snow Road buses dropped off AT the terminal. They will say what about Terminal D? That guy will say United still has to pay rent until 20XX. The dude will be like, my wife's sister's in-laws came in town for the RNC and they really liked the airport upgrades. Done. Thread closed. Good talk everyone.
December 16, 20168 yr Yawn. Can we just find this thread from last year and change all the 2015s to 2016s? I'll say I fly all the time and CLE isn't that bad. CLE is a dump. However I do really appreciate the really cheap flights through Frontier and Spirit. I didn't have a bad experience but it is dumpy and lacks in amenities / features.
December 16, 20168 yr http://www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2016-north-america-airport-satisfaction-study CVG = the good CMH = the bad CLE = the ugly Most of the Jan-Oct opinion sampling for this study was during CLE construction when conditions were much worse than usual. Also, JD Power makes its money in the public relations consulting business. It's not totally unfair to note their customers tend to rank pretty high in these polls. December 16, 20168 yr I'm at CLE weekly and fly all over. CLE is not a dump, at all with the new renos. Sure wing A isn't fabulous, but it's also not a dump. Again, I feel like I need a shower when I leave BNA in Nashville. That carpet is nasty AF. Not sure what all the cleveland stink is when it comes to experience

I just flew in and out of CLE from LA and was pleasantly surprised at how it looked. It was clean and pleasant with more restaurant options than I had expected. Just because it doesn't have a Louis Viutton doesn't mean it's a "dump."
December 17, 20168 yr LaGuardia is a truely a dump IMO...which proves judging a city by its airport is stupid. All other USA airports are what they are, airports that look decent or not depending on how long its been since they have been updated. Who cares unless you get stuck at one. They are 21st century bus stations, and I wouldn't judge a city by it. A rail option to the center city is truely a good airport in any part of the world. Customs handling is a plus if that is a factor. Other than that, if the carpet tiles are 20 years old...I really don't give a F**K

December 23, 20168 yr To me, it's clear Indianapolis is the best "midsized" airport in the country but I don't get Portland's ranking. I flew in-and-out of there in October and while it was okay, I wouldn't say it was better than, say, Seattle, Denver, or SLC. Same here. IND has the luxury of having been built completely from the ground up in a post-9/11 environment. The facility is what every mid-sized airport terminal would love to be. I feel the exact same way about PDX. I flew through there and was neither impressed nor disappointed. As far as our Ohio airports are concerned, I really don't understand why CLE gets such a negative rating other than the rental car facility. However, I'm under the impression that is being remedied somehow? I love the ease of access of CLE as an arriving passenger. The connection to the Rapid is a huge advantage, and the taxi stand is incredibly convenient and easy. Outbound transit to through the terminal is relatively hassle-free as well. The food options are phenomenal and I think CLE's best attraction. I spent a lovely hour or two waiting for a flight at Great Lakes Brewing. All the other options are great as well. While the structure itself might be dated, it's a functional building overall. The terminal modernization project at CMH really helped bring up the appearance of the terminal, particularly the check-in area. Previously, the 80s-era ceiling and outdated desks were an extremely poor first-impression. The ticketing lobby looks phenomenal now with skylights, clean walls, and improved flooring and lighting. The concourses, especially B, have also seen pretty dramatic improvements. The only lack is CMHs food and beverage options. Everything is a Starbucks or a sandwich shop. Recent changes in concessions (Land-Grant Brewing, Eddie George, and Bob Evans), haven't done anything too inspiring to change that. Retail options are nothing spectacular either. I haven't flown out of CVG in ages, but I've always loved Terminal 3, now the only one in use. The openness of Concourse B and the ticketing lobby, the ease of the tram, and the retail/concession options make it an incredibly attractive facility. The renovations done to the screening checkpoint and Concourse A look fantastic though, only solidifying my impressions of CVG.
December 28, 20168 yr I still can't get over how much extra unused space there is in the security checkpoint area in CVG. There is probably enough space to handle 5x as many passengers as the airport currently serves. In their last remodel, they squished the security into the middle part of that area and just have massive amounts of empty space on the left and right.
January 12, 20178 yr IND deserves its high rankings. Even though it has very limited non-stop routes, it is an excellent facility with great amenities. I agree it's one of the best airports its size. PDX deserves a high ranking for its locally-based amenities and decent flight routes on the West Coast, but the airport looks dated now. I don't buy the hipster carpet argument. Both the old and new carpet suck! Lol, it's time for a revamp. SFO and DTW deserved way higher rankings than they got. In terms of amenities, flight routes, and facilities, they are two of the best major airports in the country. In fact, I'd rank SFO first and DTW second! They have really upped their game in recent years and handle their large passenger volumes well. SFO also has a good rail connection on BART. Considering its size, I can't think of any airport that beats SFO. JFK also deserved a higher ranking since all of its recent renovations have been solid, it is better than the other two major NYC area airports, and it has that people mover to Jamaica Queens station. SEA, LAS, and SLC were ranked fairly. They are good airports. Salt Lake City has a a shockingly good airport for a small city its size. It's exemplary, and the best model for airports its size. Though I might ding LAS for its rental car facility and trying so hard to ban Uber until recently (if Vegas had better, fairly-priced taxi service, I wouldn't be hard on this), LAS has kept up with the times and manages its high volume well. ATL was ranked way too high. Even though they have the best air-rail connection in the states on MARTA, it is a monstrous facility with crappy amenities and long TSA lines. ATL proves it's possible for airports to get too big. LAX proves this too. LAX is still an embarrassing dump with horrendous amenities. I can't believe that's the main airport for our nation's second largest city. Burbank Airport is actually much better (retro cool- it looks like Toledo Express lol) and easier if you're going to Hollywood. That's good for us West Coast folks. John Wayne Orange County is also a great airport. It should have been ranked higher. I find Nashville to be an absolute hole. Not sure what criteria rated them higher Agreed! It's way too limited in amenities and flight options. The live country music also did it in for me. AUS is similar. Austin is another example of an airport holding its city back. Around that size of airport, St. Louis is actually the best. It deserved a way higher ranking. Oakland International, while still terribly dated and limited in amenities, also deserved a higher ranking. All the recent route additions due to Oakland's tech boom have been great, and the new renovations are improving the facilities. OAK also added a great air-rail connection on BART to bypass the hellacious traffic of Silicon Bay. It deserves to rank higher now. Before the BART people mover, yeah, it sucked since you had to take the worst freeway in the United States (I-880) to get there. That new OAK people mover on BART is outstanding and better than what most airports have that are connected to mass transit. This airport ranking list is hella bunk! *Cities need to step up their airport game to compete in the 21st century. It's a big deal for corporate relocations and for start-ups raising capital and nabbing key business development accounts. The reason OAK is spending so much money right now improving the airport is because OAK has insatiable tech demand. SFO alone is not enough to meet this demand. If you don't invest in your airport, you really can doom your city. Businesses will move to cities with better airports...
March 4, 20178 yr I thought the Fort Myers airport was a really nice one when I flew there, and very new. (Maybe San Jose as well--could be confusing those.) I know when I flew to Fort Myers, though, that it was definitely an older crowd going there.... Atlanta is just too large. Plenty of food options, but it's overwhelming to navigate if you aren't that familiar with it.
