January 3, 20178 yr Awesome thread! It looks like such an amazing city. I've been wanting to go but have been scared off by the coup and the terrorist attacks. What was it like being there during the coup? thanks all -- actually we were the first plane from america to land at ataturk after the airport attack. it was unclear if our night flight would go until late the next day as of course flights had been canceled, so that was nerve racking. but we left on time and all went well. when we came back, we went to taksim square in the morning, went back to the hotel and checked out, flew home and landed at jfk, took the subway home, dropped our luggage and immediately went out as is our traveling tradition when we get home. almost as soon as we sat down the news broke about the coup attempt. so that was nerve racking yet again, especially as we watched on the news as tanks rolled in on taksim square where we literally just were that morning. in hindsight, i did notice the internet went out a couple times and very weird website screens popped up once in the days before. so they were definately messing with internet service and the coup was actually in progress before anyone knew for sure. btw -- the reina club that was just attacked on new years eve is just across the bosphorus from our first hotel room in cengelkoy. its very popular and there are several big indoor/outdoor clubs like that along the waterfront on the european side. sad to say, but yeah i would certainly hold off visiting turkey for a while. i have some turkish friends and co-workers who agree.
