Redeveloping that "TALS Corner" building would be excellent, as well as beefing up that area in general with more businesses. Taqueria Mixteca is already very popular but there's definitely still a perception among many that it's not an area you want to be.

Another East Dayton project happening soon: a Cat Cafe with a space under contract at 1513 E Fifth St., very close to the Fifth St Brewpub. I'd post the Bizjournals article but I'm new and can't post links.

Here's the history of the building(s) where the bakery will be...it used to Anticoli's!

Here's an article about all of the new businesses coming to St. Anne's Hill.....looks like the brew pub has really been a catalyst for activity on East 5th Street.

All great news! St. Anne's is such a charming little area and I can't wait to see its commercial strip take off. It helps too that although 5th is still a dead zone between Wayne and High, it's at least had a bit of a road diet this past summer. Between that and Oregon East hopefully popping up soon, St. Anne's won't seem so far away any more.

Anticoli's must've moved like the circus.  I remember it being on Salem Avenue and then eventually moving out to Clayton on Main Street.  And now it's gone, like the Grub Steak.

Yes - Anticoli's moved a lot. They started on East 5th, then moved to Salem Avenue (across from the old Miracle Lane Shopping Center). I had my college graduation party there in 1988. As the Salem Avenue area began to decline they left and moved to Clayton. I think that was around 2000.

There was a proposal about 10 years ago to build some infill along the south side of 5th in front of the Dayton Towers building to try an enliven that stretch. With all of the activity happening further east, maybe that proposal will come back.

I didn't know that; interesting. I think the recent road diet for 5th definitely could help make that possible. (And man is there a lot of space on the SW corner of Keowee and 5th too.) The new bike lanes on that stretch of 5th are nice and there's a Link bike share station right up across from Stivers near the new stuff. Getting a new restaurant in the space that was most recently New York Pizzeria would be big too. I know there was recently an article that said the same people might try again with a new restaurant, but not sure how that's going.

Yeah, that NY Pizzeria space would be a great place for another neighborhood pub.

The Dayton Metro Library is moving forward with plans for a new branch to combine two existing sites.

The library will break ground this fall on a $9.7 million Southeast Branch at the corner of Wayne and Watervliet, equal distance from the East and Belmont branches it will replace. The project will be completed in about a year, said Jayne Klose, community engagement manager for the library.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: Pizzeria, bar, coffee shop, antiques mall planned for east Dayton

On a section of East Third Street where there’s nearly as many vacant stores as occupied ones, good things are happening behind closed doors because of some local entrepreneurs.

Work is underway to give a former funeral home new life as an antiques marketplace and coffee shop.

A tire shop that closed is being cleared out and may become a pizzeria that has won over diners in northeast Ohio.

A coffee roasting operation has moved into an abandoned garage.

And a shuttered donut shop that has been collecting dust has been bought by someone who wants to reopen it as a bar and restaurant.

-- I'm still amazed at how quickly Huffman is turning itself around. I still wish the area could have become a coherent Hispanic district, but I'm just as happy to see more hipster business opening up around there.

Exclusive: Century-old building converting to new wedding venue in historic Dayton neighborhood

A former ice cream cone plant built at the turn of the 20th century is being converted into a new wedding venue in downtown Dayton. The massive project will bring premier event space to the region while redeveloping a former factory that has become an eye sore in a historic neighborhood.

The 30,000-square-foot property, located at 141 Ringgold St. in the historic Huffman neighborhood, will be redeveloped as "The Lift." The venue will mostly be for wedding ceremonies and receptions, but will support corporate gatherings and other events. The venue will have 20,000 square feet of event space on the lower and upper floors, and a 10,000-square-foot basement may also be converted in the future.

Local nonprofit's $6M expansion seeks more funding

About $1 million away from its fundraising goal, a nonprofit on Dayton's east side is hoping a local funding committee will get it one step closer to financing its nearly $6 million expansion and renovation. The group wants to finish fundraising this spring.

East End Community Services wants $300,000 from the Dayton Region Priority Development & Advocacy Committee (PDAC) to fund the "Whole Family Services Hub" project at 624 Xenia Ave. in the Twin Towers neighborhood. East End has already raised $5 million toward the effort's $5.9 million price tag, with a goal of completing all fundraising by April 30.

East End, which merged with the national behavioral health and human services nonprofit WestCare Foundation in 2017, addresses the "complex needs of individuals and families living in poverty" and seeks to "break the cycle of generational poverty that has gripped inner east Dayton since the 1960's," its application said.

Local nonprofit's $6M expansion gains traction with funding boost

A local nonprofit has secured most of the funding it needs to embark on an $5.9 million expansion and renovation project. The funding available will kick off phase one of the project and help grow critical programs aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty.

East End Community Services has raised $5 million to begin work on phase one of the “Whole Family Services Hub” project at 624 Xenia Ave. in Dayton. The renovated and new spaces will add a second floor and one-story addition, bringing East End’s footprint to approximately 22,000 square feet. The second floor will add 5,500 square feet of space, and the addition will be incorporated into the northeast corner of the building. The renovation of 614 and 700 Xenia Ave. will add an additional 4,500 square feet.

The renovation will provide a more conducive and welcoming environment for the people the organization serves on the east side of Dayton. Additionally, this expansion will allow the growth of critical programs aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty in the community.

Dayton nonprofit plans $4M revitalization of neighborhood in Southeast Dayton

A Dayton-based nonprofit is embarking on a $4 million effort to renovate and restore a local neighborhood that boomed in the 20th century, but has now become impoverished. The project will see historic buildings restored to their former glory and provide new jobs and services to Miami Valley residents.

New Hope Project, Inc. is currently undertaking an effort to redevelop the 500 block of Xenia Avenue.

Dayton-based CityWide recently identified the area as the best location for economic development along the corridor. The project is currently in the early stages, with physical structure and community needs assessments underway.

The 35,000 square feet of contiguous building space used to be the economic hub of the Twin Towers community, located Southeast of downtown Dayton.

While Xenia Avenue is currently only known for crime and vacant house fires, it has tons of potential.  Hopefully, some of the progress seen in South Park and Walnut Hills will spill over into the Twin Towers neighborhood.
