^ I didn't say that it was an act.  Merely that it might be an act.  I guess what I want to say is that Johnson comes across as very polished and wants to focus on neighborhood development over downtown development.  I don't know that I agree with that but he appears to be the best politician in the group of challengers.

^ That is just for city employees.

^ I'd find it hard to believe that there are very many city employees that make less than $15 per hour but perhaps some clerks and part-time workers.

It's hard to find very many that DESERVE $15/hour from my experience.

What about all the summer help?  Or are they excluded?

I wonder how many unionized employees get automatic raises if their salary falls below a certain percentage of the "base rate".  Such contracts aren't uncommon in the private sector.  Stealth raise in exchange for an endorsement?

Just saw with the wikipedia entry on the election. Long list of people.  I know its not always accurate....Madalone is not listed, for example. But I was trying to find a global view of the election and couldn't find one anywhere else.

They don't have to, Zack. You just did it for them...

It's official, running for Mayor @CityofCleveland.My opponents may bring up my past drunkenness & DUI's.I am focused on the future of #CLE https://t.co/6tvSilvrud

^Classic. In his own official announcement he mentions drunkenness & DUI's! No better way to demonstrate cluelessness.

Oh, hell, doesn't anyone recall the closing scene of "8 Mile"?

That was brilliant, not clueless.  He just largely defused the issue.

It is kind of entertaining that he used the term "drunkenness" instead of "alcoholism."

If you're gunna own it, own it.  At least he's not proposing spending $2 million bucks on a drunk driving track.

To be fair, I have had some of my best ideas whilst drunk.

My guess is that some of his signatures weren't valid.  But if he is having a hard time getting 3,000 signatures, I wonder how robust his campaign organization is.

He asked if I could fill a petition, I said okay and said they would bring one over.  Either they wouldn't drop it off (I am seldom home in the daytime) or never did.

Madalone, Brewer and Kilo all filed additional signatures to qualify for mayoral ballot.

Now the names will be checked against registered voters, according to the article this should be done by Friday.

I assume there must be a good reason each of these 3 candidates couldn't comply with the original deadline, but it sure shakes my confidence in them.

Six candidates already are in - Jackson, Councilman Jeff Johnson, restaurateur Brandon Chrostowski, state Rep. Bill Patmon, Councilman Zack Reed and Dyrone Smith.

Dyrone Smith - a total unknown - was able to get the required signatures in time, yet these guys were not? That's not a good look for them.

Brewer's inflammatory Facebook posts.

In an age of reporting on a politicians social media, pretty sure this qualifies as reporting. Anyway, it reveals, to me at least, more of Brewer's character. If the country couldn't find 2 worthy candidates to run our Federal government, why am I surprised that there don't seem to be any viable candidates for the Mayor of Cleveland?

"Zack Reed should fall in love with a woman.....".

He's threatening to "go there" if anyone speaks of cross dressing, isn't he?

I'm not seeing Tony doing much yet, which is a shame.  An outsider has to hit the ground running.

from the article: "But in 2007, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy McDonnell granted an expungement that cleared the way for him to hold office."

Why did Nancy McDonnell do that? Could this be looked at?  Could the expungement be reversed?  I had thought his conviction was overturned. But it turns out it wasn't---he's still guilty---only his record was expunged.  He shouldn't be allowed to run for any public office in the US.

This seems weird, OCI tweeted they were out on a neighborhood walk with the councilman and mayor tonight. Seems innocent enough, the mayor of the city and the ward's councilman talking to the residents.

But the mayor's tweets very much made it seem like a campaign event: https://twitter.com/CLEMayorJackson/status/892921656942972928

If that were the case, why is OCI participating in campaign events?

Apparently it was initiated by members of a local block club to talk about development. But it's curious why the mayor was tweeting about campaigning.

Actually, it was a group of residents who requested through the councilman that the mayor meet up with them in order to discuss an issue.

^ Just saw your post after editing mine. Got it, thanks.

I never thought I'd say this but don't even care who wins. I just want Frank Jackson out.

^Careful what you wish for. I agree that Jackson lacks vision and strong leadership, but he's a known quantity. If Zack Reed or Jeff Johnson are elected, this town will turn to crap and be the next Detroit. All this investment and momentum will be gone, and could ruin us for decades.

^ Exactly....Frank Jackson is the best of a horrible collection of candidates.  Having twitter conversations with Reed and Johnson is infuriating.  This area would come to a crashing halt if either of those two were elected.

Disagree, as long as neither pushes through that minimum wage increase.  Both are competent, both are capable, and both have a clue vis a vis "Cleveland Two".  If FJ doesn't start cracking down on these increasingly bold street criminals, we could be the next Chicago. The only candidate unequivocally worse than Jackson is Eric Brewer.

However, neither is really campaigning yet (I live in an area that would be crucial to any upset win) so at this point I don't see either overtaking Jackson.

Cleveland mayoral candidate Eric Brewer's Facebook postings show a profane, inflammatory style

Oh lord, don't tell me this guy is actually running for mayor? He sounds completely unhinged. So much verbal diarrhea.

However, I don't think felons like Johnson and Reed are any better; at least Brewer's unprofessionalism is limited to his rhetoric, whereas the actual conduct of those other two nutters is something toxic. They're on par with Kwame Kilpatrick if anything.

Where the hell is that orange guy from the last election?

He's president now.  :-D

As long as Reed and Johnson both stay in, I think they'll fight for the same votes to the left of Jackson.  Despite the DUI's, Reed does seem more viable and thoughtful than Johnson. (Although his "Safety First" campaign slogan is hilarious in that context.)  I think Frank would also be vulnerable in some of the western half of the city, but I don't see anyone consolidating the opposition to him in those areas.

At the end of the day, the more people on the ballot, the better it is for the Mayor. And the establishment support will probably be enough to put him over the top in a 9-person primary.

Being a 27 year old with close friends living in Detroit Shoreway, Ohio City, Tremont, Downtown, etc. do not sleep on Madelone garnering significant support from millenials in these areas. I think this election will be like a brick sidewalk.. certain "bricks" of the city will be taken out by Johnson, Reed, and Madelone, but Jackson will be the sandy-mix that fills in all of the spaces between those bricks and will win easily.

Doesn't anybody think Brandon can do anything?  I don't really think he can win, but certainly has some support?

Naw, I doubt one voter in ten has heard of him.  That's Tony's issue too and while it's beatable, either would have needed to start long ago.

I'm actually undecided, Madalone or Johnson most likely, possibly Reed.

Polensek hasn't endorsed yet AFAIK, but just about all the other Councilmen back Jackson.  That makes Collinwood key to a challenger but none seems to be making a big effort.

I know Brandon is popular and backed in Shaker since they are his biggest donors and supporters, but that doesn't do him much good in Cleveland.

Kind of like Tony and the millenials.  They've all heard of FBT it seems to me (I've got a foot in that camp).  He hired some former Koch people which is interesting, but they weren't very competent and he couldn't afford that false start.

^Whats FBT? And by Koch, do you mean Ed Koch?

I'm actually undecided' date=' Madalone or Johnson most likely, possibly Reed.[/quote']

E Rocc--you're a sound fellow! How could you possibly support Johnson or Reed?!? They'll destroy this city. At least Madalone has stated some strategies and ideas, but Johnson or Reed?

Koch Brothers.  Jonathan Petrea used to work for them.  He's the guy that screwed up TM's petitions.  FBT is Fresh Brewed Tees, Tony's company.

Tony comes closest to my views.  I knew Jeff in college, he was a solid guy then and most importantly he was someone you could reason with.  Zack reminds me of him in a lot of ways, if you listen carefully you can tell he knows better than some of the things he feels the need to say to get elected.

Either is better than a guy who thinks the solution to street crime and gangs is not to chase them and to build them a 2 million dollar hangout.  Chief Dogberry elected mayor.

I haven't encountered this wide scale of young Madalone supporters that has been mentioned above. Are they all just downtown? Everyone I've talked with has been impartial at best.

I haven't either.  I was referring specifically to mutual friends on my FB, most of whom are suburbanite millenials.

I'm mostly talking about people in their 30s I know from the bar or through Holly.
