Posted March 6, 20178 yr Second Lakefront Tower Coming? Barrett-Lo has made plans for second tower next to The Couture. By Jeramey Jannene - Mar 3rd, 2017 03:01 pm The Couture, the proposed $122 million, 44-story lakefront apartment tower, is being designed to have an attached, neighboring tower. Barrett-Lo Visionary Development, the firm developing The Couture at 909 E. Michigan St., is designing the apartment tower and its mixed-use base in a way that will allow for a second tower on the site. Design documents recently filed with the city detail the first tower’s ellipse-shaped footprint on the northeast corner of the site and show an area at the southwest corner of the site that leaves space for the foundation of a second tower. http://urbanmilwaukee.com/2017/03/03/eyes-on-milwaukee-second-lakefront-tower-coming/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 10, 20204 yr Milwaukee: The Couture Developer Secures Financing https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2020/06/26/eyes-on-milwaukee-the-couture-developer-secures-financing/ "Barrett Lo Visionary Development has crossed a major milestone for the The Couture. The firm has secured the necessary private financing commitments to advance the 44-story, $122 million apartment tower according to a statement from developer Rick Barrett." December 31, 20204 yr Cross-posted from Light Rail thread - 44 story Couture apartment tower has secured final financing and will break ground in January. Originally proposed in 2012. The best part about this project is the street level transit center for the Streetcar and BRT transit center. (In fact, this loop of the Streetcar has been held up for a few years because the developer had trouble getting the financing together and the proposed route goes right through this building.) According to the developer, 97% of the ground level of this multi-use development will be public spaces. The second best part is that the ugly US Bank building will no longer be the most prominent skyscraper in Milwaukee’s skyline (although it will still be the tallest). June 27, 20213 yr The Couture, A Downtown Milwaukee Lakefront Skyscraper, Begins Construction After 9 Years Of Planning https://www.wuwm.com/2021-06-07/the-couture-a-downtown-milwaukee-lakefront-skyscraper-begins-construction-after-9-years-of-planning Groundbreaking FINALLY happened a few weeks ago on this project which was originally proposed in 2012. Lots of great info in the article. Some highlights: *** When the construction is finally completed, the building will have 44 stories, 322 high-end apartments, around 4,300 square feet of restaurant and shopping space and a transit concourse on the street level. The entire construction project is projected to be completed in 2023, but the transit concourse is expected to be done sooner and help expand Milwaukee’s downtown streetcar. “In June of 2022 when the transit concourse is done, we’ll finally be able to run lakefront loop of the Hop,” Daykin explains. “That’s been awaiting the transit concourse because we have tracks that run down Michigan Street off of the main line, we have tracks that run Clybourn Street parallel to Michigan that run down the main line and where do those tracks connect? Right through the transit concourse.” The lakefront loop of the Hop isn’t the only project The Couture has unlocked. The city of Milwaukee has proposed developing a park across Lincoln Memorial Drive from The Couture and building a pedestrian bridge to connect the lakeside park and the new skyscraper. Daykin says the city is looking to fund this project mostly through private funds, which it can now look to raise as The Couture has finally broken ground. “[The park] would tie together both The Couture, Discovery World, you’ve got the Milwaukee Art Museum in that location and then of course, you also have Maier Festival Park where we have Summerfest and Irish Fest and all those other great festivals,” he says. *** When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

October 6, 20222 yr I’m in the good land of Milwaukee this week and I’m staying just a couple blocks from everyone’s favorite coming-soon streetcar station, the 36-story Couture residential mixed-use high rise. I grabbed some pix and was relieved to see both progress and active work. Maybe this several years old station will finally see use: Elevator core rising: This place is going to have great views of Lake Michigan and is close to the Calatrava designed art museum and the science museum (Discovery World). Also close to the Summerfest grounds in the background of this shot. Here’s the 794 bridge that my Uber driver accidentally got on this morning before picking me up, losing both of us a solid ten minutes. And here’s the stupid stretch of 794 that separates downtown from the Third Ward: Here’s a post on Couture that shows what they are building. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?
June 5, 20232 yr Another big wooden building has been proposed for Milwaukee - called The Edison. It was initially proposed for 28 stories; the latest version is 32 stories. Maybe Harbor Bay is paying attention to this. September 16, 20231 yr I was in Milwaukee the last week of August and I visited some of the new development sites, including Couture. This one is particularly exciting with the Streetcar running through the first floor. The latest article on this development: https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2023/06/02/friday-photos-streetcar-rolling-through-rising-couture/ Streetcar tracks and the shadow of me and my Bublr rental bike: A look back at the US Bank building: Before heading to the other side of The Couture, I turned around and took a picture of the Calatrava designed entrance to the MKE art museum - it's so good!: Now I'm on the garage directly west of the building - you can see how close the art museum is from the first picture, and then Summerfest grounds to the right in the following picture. Here's how it looks from the streetcar tracks on the south side of the building: Um, did someone forget to close the construction gate on this side? Yes, they did. Thank you! Check out this future PoV of the streetcar: Another view from the streetcar tracks under the building: For reference, a quick picture of the Hop, Milwaukee's modern streetcar: Another interesting project is going up across useless I-794 in the Third Ward, as @mrnyc posted above. I grabbed some pics. The first is from atop the same parking garage next to Couture, looking the other direction: Here's a couple more after I returned my rental bike and was walking to dinner. Note the streetcar tracks, this time south of I-794. And a few shots from the Amtrak Hiawatha on my way into town: With Northwest Mutual building and US Bank building in background: And this gem: I looked over from our eighth floor cafeteria and noticed the northbound Amtrak Hiawatha go by - what a treat!
