March 17, 20178 yr Author Why ResponsibleOhio founders want $45M pot farm in Wilmington ResponsibleOhio co-founders Jimmy Gould and Ian James have an agreement to buy 19 acres through Wilmington’s community development group to build a “cannabis campus,” provided their proposed venture lands one of 12 licenses for large marijuana cultivation operations under the state’s 2016 medical marijuana legalization law. March 17, 20178 yr Author Nick Lachey not part of new marijuana venture – but an NBA legend is an investor The founders of the failed 2015 push to legalize recreational marijuana in Ohio have a new venture with an almost entirely new group of investors – except for one NBA legend. In 2015 ResponsibleOhio cofounders Ian James and Jimmy Gould lined up money from investors to put a constitutional amendment on the Ohio ballot. Those investors would then have a share of one of 10 locations where marijuana could be grown on large-scale cultivation sites. The proposal's backers included Cincinnati native Nick Lachey, who gained fame in the boy band 98 Degrees. March 20, 20178 yr Eastlake City Council approves sale of former Nike site for medical marijuana business Eastlake City Council on March 14 unanimously approved the sale of the former JFK Senior Center property, located at 33505 Curtis Blvd., to Buckeye Relief for a potential medical marijuana business. During a Finance Committee meeting, Mayor Dennis Morley stated that the property, which is also a former launch base for the Nike-Ajax missiles, was appraised for $300,000. That is the price for which the city would sell the property, he said. Sale of the property is contingent upon Buckeye Relief, which is based in Chagrin Falls, getting the required state-approved licensing. May 4, 20178 yr I guess it can no longer be said that Painesville is incapable of attracting new business. This is so funny. This is the little neighborhood is where I grew up. Makes sense. I didn't think the powers-that-be would allow a facility like this in a "nice" part of town (well, what passes for that in Painesville anyway :|). I love the name, "Growth Orchard." Council unanimously agreed to move forward with the resolution to allow City Manager Monica Irelan to enter into a one-year option agreement with Growth Orchard for 3 acres of land at 1170 North State St. Growth Orchard will purchase real estate that is no longer needed for municipal purposes at $45,500 per acre. July 5, 20177 yr House Bill 523, effective on September 8, 2016, legalizes medical marijuana in Ohio. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program will allow people with certain medical conditions, upon the recommendation of an Ohio-licensed physician certified by the State Medical Board, to purchase and use medical marijuana. http://medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/ There seems to be a few grow site projects across the state in the works, and I am just curious as to the level of competition to secure these grow licenses. Wilmington has both level-1 and level-2 grow sites in the works CannAscend Ohio, Level 1 facility http://cannascendohio.com/ Ancient Roots, Level 2 facility http://www.wnewsj.com/news/44908/a-second-medicinal-marijuana-growing-facility-proposed-for-wilmington Cincinnati has a level 1 facility in the works from the folks at Rhinegeist Nature's Apex, Level 1 http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2017/06/15/rhinegeist-co-founders-float-plan-for-large.html I look forward to discussing how this will impact the state's economy and how long before recreational marijuana is legal in the state.
July 11, 20177 yr Author Buckeyes legend Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Sr. looking to open Cleveland marijuana dispensaries A Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Ohio State University is teaming up with two other Ohio football luminaries to build Cleveland-area medical marijuana dispensaries. Troy Smith, who won college football’s top honors in 2006, is a partner with Ted Ginn Sr., his football coach at Glenville High School, and former Cleveland Browns player Eric Metcalf. They've teamed up with Jim Buchanan, a former Cleveland resident who runs a marijuana dispensary near Seattle. July 11, 20177 yr ^ That's bold. Surprisingly so. I absolutely predict that people who complain that Ginn Sr. and Smith are setting a bad example for children will not hesitate to get drunk off their ass on a beer named after Bernie Kosar.
July 27, 20177 yr Author Here's where Ohio is targeting for the state's 60 medical marijuana dispensaries Franklin and Cuyahoga counties could house most marijuana dispensaries in Ohio when the state's medical marijuana program is fully implemented. July 27, 20177 yr I met with a real estate broker a couple weeks ago who is working almost exclusively with a guy who is trying to set up locations in NEO in anticipation of this thing moving ahead. The broker said the biggest challenge is finding locations that fit the legal requirements. In addition to the obvious things like it can't be near a school, church, etc., they're running into the issue that if any property has bank debt, having a marijuana related business is a violation of their loan terms, so they can't have one as a tenant.
July 27, 20177 yr ^ At least non with Federally chartered banks. State chartered banks may have more leverage but it's up to their board to decide if they're willing to take the risk, which they may not given the current AG's stance on marijuana. Private money lenders would be willing to allow them as a tenant, I presume.

July 27, 20177 yr I'm interested as to why Montgomery County is set to get 4 dispensaries and Hamilton County 3. Seems like it should be the other way around...
July 28, 20177 yr Maybe a dumb question here. If Ohio legitimately wants to have a medial marijuana program with no recreational component... why isn't is just distributed through existing pharmacies like any other medical prescription? Why the need to set up a separate infrastructure for distributing marijuana?

If Ohio legitimately wants to a medial marijuana program with no recreational component... why isn't is just distributed through existing pharmacies like any other medical prescription? July 28, 20177 yr The way in which people are talking about it, take for example the Mayor of Wilmington, it has an air of inevitability that it will be legal recreationally very soon. I'm not involved in the movement to know what the game plan is though. Thinking about it, I have this sneaky feeling that despite our best efforts to vote no on the ResponsibleOhio legislation... something oligarchical could still be built upon the foundation on this state run medical operation. I'm not a politician, so I don't really understand how the transition would take place for growers. Maybe it just has to do with licensing?

I'm not a politician, so I don't really understand how the transition would take place for growers. Maybe it just has to do with licensing? I believe every state that has legal recreational weed started with medical. In California, medical dispensaries got first dibs on recreational licenses. Medical dispensaries greatly decrease in numbers in states that have recreational marijuana, although most allow medical dispensaries to sell with less tax, which does give them some positive point of differentiation. I believe growers can sell their product wherever it is legally available to be sold, so when recreational becomes legal, existing growers can sell to both medical and recreational dispensaries. I have been involved with some of the land use regulations for the sale of recreational weed in LA. It's very interesting how a multi billion $ industry is flourishing and growing in some states while still being federally illegal.
July 28, 20177 yr It's still surprising to me that recreational failed so badly in Ohio. If it were on the ballot in 2016 instead of 2015, it probably would've passed.
July 28, 20177 yr Too many beat-down heroin addicts bouncing around in rural counties scared the fat Jesus gang that spends untold hours a day eating and pissing/moaning. Appalachian and deep Midwestern Ohio counties such as Darke and Preble have an explosive dichotomy of these two groups that have great disdain for each other. Add in various West Sides and you can see why it failed.

Also have to add in the hippies and stoners who wanted in to the industry who were against the whole "man" aspect of the ballot initiative. No matter how it becomes legal, the cultivation and sale of marijuana is going to end up being quasi-oligarchical, as almost all industries in the US are.

December 12, 20177 yr Author Turned down for cultivator license, Responsible Ohio backers plan to bring recreational marijuana to ballot Frustrated by how state regulators are administering Ohio's medical marijuana program, backers of the failed 2015 marijuana amendment plan to return to the ballot next year seeking approval of recreational adult use. Jimmy Gould, one of the group's co-founders, said Monday he likely would have protested the state's process even if his new business, CannAscend LLC, had not been rejected as one of 12 large-scale indoor marijuana cultivators. "The process was contaminated beyond anyone’s imagination," Gould said in a Columbus news conference that was streamed online. “If we lost in a fair and balanced process, we would accept that," he said. Ms. Adams also cast the only “no” vote at council’s zoning and planning committee meeting Jan. 10, and she said Tuesday that she is concerned about the safety and security of Toledo’s residents. “It’s bad enough that we do have people driving under the influence of alcohol, and we add to that driving under the influence of marijuana, that is a concern to me,” she said. “I think it makes us enablers.” http://www.toledoblade.com/news/2018/01/16/Toledo-council-gives-Glass-City-Alternatives-the-go-ahead-to-open-medical-marijuana-dispensary.html
February 14, 20187 yr Author Ohio auditor finds 'critical flaw' in licensing process for medical marijuana cultivators Ohio Auditor Dave Yost said he has flagged a "critical flaw" – administrator access to scorers' account passwords – in the process of licensing cultivators for the state's medical marijuana program. In response, the Ohio Department of Commerce says it has fixed the issue and that there's no evidence that the flaw was exploited. February 22, 20187 yr Author Ohio's medical marijuana licensing flawed, auditor says, but too late to 'pause' and sort it out Ohio's medical marijuana program should continue issuing licenses despite several flaws in the process, state Auditor Dave Yost has concluded, because it's too late to stop and fix them. Yost said in a blistering letter to Commerce Director Jacqueline Williams that she should seek the advice of the Ohio attorney general. "The process as it has unfolded is sufficiently flawed that it seems likely the decisions on one or more application were wrong – indeed your own work has identified one such case," he wrote. "Weighing the multiple process flaws against the harms caused by 'pausing' the program at this late date seems to me to favor allowing the program to move forward and allowing the program flaws to be addressed through the administrative appeals process, or other litigation."
