Ohio's medical marijuana program's manual scoring for cultivator licenses created security risk, report says

An independent review of Ohio's scoring of applications for large-scale medical marijuana cultivators by EY did not turn up any significant errors beyond one that already resulted in an extra licensee.

But the accounting firm knocked the state Department of Commerce for manual processes and gaps in IT security.

The state agency, one of three regulatory bodies overseeing implementation of the program, hired the former Ernst & Young to review how it's handling the licensing process, starting with disputed scoring for indoor grow operations. EY is a subcontractor to law firm Squire Patton Boggs, Commerce's special counsel for lawsuits and administrative appeals by rejected applicants.

A Look at One of Ohio’s First Medical Cannabis Dispensaries, Greenleaf Apothecary

greenleaf-1150x550.jpg

Provisional licenses for Ohio’s pioneer medical marijuana dispensaries were handed out last week, simultaneously revealing the sites where patients in need will be able to purchase the drug.

Greenleaf Apothecary, one of the five companies awarded licenses here in Franklin County, will set up shop Downtown at 111 Vine St., near the North Market. Their Director of Community Engagement and Patient Services, Kate Nelson, said the facility will function much like a pharmacy, with reliable information and patient comfort among their top priorities.

“One of our goals was to destigmatize medical cannabis so that all patients feel comfortable accessing treatment, and by making the dispensary experience open and welcoming and bright and informative,” Nelson said. “We thought that would really be a value to the community.”

MyCannX Looks to Form Medical Cannabis Network Built on Outreach, Education

MyCannX, a Maryland-based company focused on community outreach and education around medical marijuana, is making the move to Ohio.

As the state nears its September 8 deadline to make the drug available to patients, MyCannX — currently operating in Maryland and Washington D.C. — is beginning to establish its Ohio network of potential patients, physicians and dispensaries. Headed by Columbus native Shawnta Hopkins-Greene, the company will take up residence in German Village next week.

Hopkins-Greene, 45, happened into the medical marijuana field in the midst of research on the drug. She’d heard already that marijuana could be used effectively as a treatment for Autism and was looking further into it as a possibility for her 12-year-old son Marcus Tyler, who was diagnosed with Autism at age 5.

Ohio gives green light to first large-scale marijuana cultivator

Ohio has given approval to the first large-scale cultivator to begin growing medical marijuana in the state.

Regulators from the Ohio Department of Commerce granted a certificate of operation Friday to Buckeye Relief LLC after completing an inspection of its facility in Eastlake in Northeast Ohio, the final hurdle before it could begin growing.

It is the first of the 13 approved large Level I cultivators – up to 25,000 square feet – to begin growing.

Norwood to vote on decriminalization of pot possession

On Election Day this fall, voters in Norwood will decide whether to join a growing number of cities across the U.S. by decriminalizing misdemeanor marijuana possession, WLWT reports.

The pro-cannabis group Sensible Norwood got the initiative on the ballot Monday after official certification from the Hamilton County Board of Elections. The community group failed to advance a similar measure past the board of elections in 2016.

Ohio medical marijuana program pushed back again

Patients waiting for access to medical marijuana in Ohio are going to have to wait a little longer.

While Ohio’s medical marijuana sales were originally set to begin in September and were later pushed back to November, a representative from the Ohio Department of Commerce has said the agency is now targeting to have the system on line before the end of the year, the Enquirer reports.

Ohio law requires that all medical marijuana is tested for potency and purity before being sold in dispensaries, but none of the state’s five licensed testing labs are open. Two are scheduled for final inspections in mid-December.

Ohio's largest credit union to offer marijuana-related services

WPCU_Corporate_Office.jpg

Ohio’s medical marijuana program is getting assistance from Wright-Patt Credit Union.

The Dayton-based credit union will offer limited banking services to qualified, licensed and legally operating businesses involved in medical marijuana.

It made the decision after consulting with the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions, the Ohio Department of Commerce and elected state officials.

Ohio House Bill 523 legalized medical marijuana use in Ohio by patients with 21 conditions, including cancer, Crohn's disease and Parkinson's disease. The program is expected to begin serving patients by early by next year.

Ohio's medical marijuana patient registry opens

Ohio's medical marijuana regulators opened the registry for patients on Monday, while cautioning the first supplies will be scant.

Activating the online registry indicates that the Board of Pharmacy anticipates the first sales within 60 days because that's the window in which patients with a physician recommendation have an "affirmative defense" to a marijuana possession charge.

Physicians certified to recommend cannabis are now able to register patients, the Medical Board of Ohio told members, after tests confirmed the online system was working.

First medical marijuana dispensary OK'd to open in Ohio

Ohio's first medical marijuana dispensary has the OK to open at the eastern edge of the state – and it could do so and make its first sale before the end of the year.

CY+, located in Wintersville in Jefferson County, will be operated by Chicago-based Cresco Labs, a seed-to-sale cannabis company licensed in six states.

"We look forward to servicing the patients of Ohio, but won’t officially open until product is available in the market," spokesman Jason Erkes said via email. "Once the grower's product is tested, we expect to receive the first product in the market and conduct the first sale in the state."

Dayton site approved for medical marijuana cultivation

A medical marijuana cultivator based in east Dayton has been granted a provisional license by the Ohio Department of Commerce.

Certified Cultivators LLC, located at 1654 Springfield St., was one of two medical marijuana cultivation companies granted provisional licenses as a result of a recent court case, PharmaCann LLC v. Ohio Department of Commerce. The second license was granted to Middlefield, Ohio-based Greenleaf Gardens, according to a news release.

Ohio OKs first medical marijuana test lab to open, licenses two more growers

transplant-082118ii*750xx1920-1080-0-100

Sales of medical marijuana – although a small quantity – might yet start before the New Year.

The Ohio Department of Commerce approved the first testing lab on Thursday and licensed two more cultivators as a result of a court decision.

Five cultivators have a limited license to sell dried flower without going through a processor – none of those are ready to open. The agency couldn't say how many weeks the testing will take before product can be sent to the state's first dispensary near the eastern state line.

The first sale of medical marijuana in Ohio will take place this week, nearly four months after the program was initially scheduled to launch.

Cresco Labs’ CY+ dispensary in Wintersville has been approved to begin sales to physician-certified patients from across the state and will open its doors on Wednesday morning.

The dispensary will offer one-on-one consultation areas where patients can discuss their conditions and appropriate marijuana products for treatment. Products offered will include edibles, vape pens and cartridges, oral sprays, pills and transdermal patches.

Signatures Being Gathered to Legalize Recreational Marijuana in Ohio

A state board gave the green light for organizers to begin gathering tens of thousands of signatures to inch closer to legalizing the sale of marijuana for recreational use in Ohio.

Should they gather the roughly 133,000 signatures needed, the so-called “Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol” organizers would give their proposal to the Ohio General Assembly. Lawmakers would then have four months to act on the proposed law legalizing marijuana use for those 21 and up.

On Monday, the Ohio Ballot Board unanimously agreed the proposal only spans a single-issue, the final regulatory hurdle before signatures can be amassed.
