Driver hits statue of Hamilton in wreck

HAMILTON — A female driver struck the Alexander Hamilton statue with her car Monday night in downtown Hamilton.

 

Around 7:30 p.m., Hamilton police and emergency crews were dispatched on reports of an accident involving a woman striking the statue. According to authorities, the woman was traveling westbound on High Street when her vehicle crossed the median.

 

The car settled on the median and was facing west while blocking the eastbound lane. Authorities said the woman appeared to suffer minor injuries.

I should have taken a pic of the two foot high post that shines on him at night, that is what was damaged, or should I say annihilated.

Hamilton statue likely to stay on High St.

HAMILTON — The Alexander Hamilton statue will likely remain on High Street, despite a recommendation to relocate the art piece after a car hit it in March.

 

Members of groups involved in the issue said this week they feel strongly that the sculpture should stay in its place on High Street.

 

The issue of relocating the statue surfaced after a March 6 accident in which a car driven by a Hamilton woman rammed the $235,000 statue.

 

Emily Anderson, 22, of the 700 block of Main Street, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, and two felony counts of assault for allegedly striking a police officer and an emergency response worker after the crash.

Cape-clad statue returning today in Hamilton

HAMILTON — After a six-week absence, a cape-clad Alexander Hamilton will return today to his High Street pedestal.

 

Portions of High Street will close from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today to allow a work crew to reset "The American Cape" statue damaged in a March car accident. The westbound lanes between Second and Third streets will close and a detour will be posted, according to the city. The eastbound lanes will be restricted to one lane of traffic.

 

The closing and work are weather permitting, officials said.

 

A crane is scheduled to reset the 13-foot statue at 8:30 a.m., with work to be completed by noon, said Hamilton Engineer Jim Collins.
