Cleveland Apartment Hunting Advice - Detroit Shoreway/Ohio City

Hi everyone, I'm excited  :-D to be joining your community and could use some advice!!

My partner and I will be moving to Cleveland this summer (he'll be working downtown at CSU) so we're currently on the hunt for a place to live. After researching and visiting the various neighborhoods we've decided on renting in the Detroit Shoreway/ Ohio City area.

The good news - it seems like there are a number of places that meet our rental criteria: gas stove, spacious kitchen, allows cats, has *some* outdoor space, and is within walking/biking distance of a downtown area. The rents are higher than we're used to, but not unmanageable (it seems like we can expect to spend around 1K for a descent 2 bedroom).

The bad news - all the places we're seeing are available NOW, but we want to sign a lease for July (our current lease isn't up until early August). I'm concerned that all the places we're seeing will go quickly, and that if we wait too long there won't be many places left to choose from. The property manager we spoke with told us that there won't be anything available come July, but he had a vested interest in getting us to sign a lease early.  :|

My Question - What can we expect in terms of availability in the next few months? Should we rush to sign a lease if we see a place we like, or will rentals continue to open up over coming months? Any advice you can offer regarding what we should know/consider about renting in this area is much appreciated!! Thanks, Cleveland Community! <3

In my experience things open up pretty regularly throughout the warm part of the year.  If there's plenty where you're looking right now, there should be plenty in July too.

Google the Edison. Brand new units on the bluff in Detroit shore way. I think move ins are this summer

I can't advise on specific rentals in the area but wanted to welcome you to the board and to Cleveland. I spend a lot of time in Gordon Square myself and there is a lot going on there that's positive. Let us know as you get closer to move-in time whatever questions you have, this is a very smart and helpful group.

June/July is peak moving time for all the medical residents and fellows starting and finishing at the Clinic/UH/Metro.  Also grad students and law students graduating and moving on.  If you fall in love with a place though, it might be worth the early lease since it's nearly May 1.

Keep an eye on Trulia. I was in a similar predicament last year. You often feel like you're "gonna miss out if we don't act now!", but more places always become available. In addition, GS/OC neighborhoods currently have 100s of homes under renovation that won't be done until summer.

Thanks for the helpful advice and reassurance, everyone!

We'll definitely keep our eyes open for the right place, but won't jump to sign a lease out of a fear of missing out (as I was tempted to do). We're also open to considering other areas of Cleveland, if you have recommendations. We still like the Gordon Square/Ohio City districts and are looking primarily in those, but opening up our search to other areas near the downtown will broaden our possibilities of finding a great place.

Are there any areas of Cleveland that you'd highly recommend living in, or any areas you'd strongly recommend we avoid?

^  I don't think you'll find anywhere better than where you're already looking.
