Posted May 2, 20178 yr Does anyone know of or have experience with a summer program, course, or camp in the Cleveland area, preferably east side, for teenage kids with a focus on computer programming? Thanks for any input.
May 2, 20178 yr You might want to check with Great Lakes Science Center. I think they have some summer camps.
May 2, 20178 yr I know those programs exist. I think WeCanCodeIT, where I went to bootcamp might have one or is affiliated with one. Your absolute best route to go would be to join the "Cleveland-tech" channel on the Slack app and ask on there. You'll definitely end up having people who work at the camps contact you directly in the chatroom and give you all the information you need. Cleveland-tech is a very helpful community. You'll have to download the slack app and join the channel. You can download it on your phone or desktop. Is this for your son or daughter? Do they know what kind of programming they want to do? I don't know much about the summer camps for teens but I imagine some of them are geared towards front end or back end, maybe even database design. I'd definitely make sure the curriculum matches what you desire to get out of the program. FYI there are fantastic sites that teach you how to code for free. W3 Schools and Code Academy to name a few. They're a great way to get your feet wet before attending a coding program!
May 2, 20178 yr Case Western has one as well: https://www.idtech.com/locations/ohio-summer-camps/cleveland/id-tech-case-western-reserve/
May 3, 20178 yr sizzlinbeef[/member] I understand if downloading the Slack app and registering and joining one of the channels is a bit of a stretch or just weird or even intimidating. I finally have time to sign in and I'm in the Cleveland-tech channel right now, asking other programmers for you. I'll keep you updated. Do you know what the prospective coding program attendee wants to learn? Honestly, Case has a great reputation and is actually at the forefront in Software Engineering in Cleveland and I personally would not hesitate to go with them. Definitely look into their program and consider it. The CEO of the coding School I recently attended is a very accomplished Software Engineering Case Alum and despite starting her own school, has dedicated a lot of time recently to helping Case develop coding curriculums. If you're on LinkedIn, contact Mel McGee (or just contact her through wecancodeit.org's website but she's always available on Slack - honestly, that would be the quickest and most efficient way to contact her.) She's the CEO of WeCanCodeIT and she's awesome! She would definitely be glad to help you. When I brought all of this up in the channel, another guy in the Cleveland-tech also mentioned WeCanCodeIT as having a summer program for teens so you should definitely contact her and see what the deal is. She's very well connected in the Cleveland tech community and if nothing else would steer you in the right direction of what you are looking for. Good luck and if there's any way I can help, please let me know :)
May 3, 20178 yr Thanks, yes, I realized upon getting into the Slack app that it's invite only, and doesn't quite give you the contact information of the person that you would need to ask for the invite. I'll try Mel on LinkedIn. Thanks.
May 3, 20178 yr Thanks for all the suggestions. I was able to gather a number of options, including Mel's input regarding new summer modules at WeCanCodeIT.
May 3, 20178 yr I wonder if the summer camp at Hyland Software is a covert operation to scout young talent. I really wouldn't be surprised. That's what some of the hackathons are for.
May 3, 20178 yr Thanks, yes, I realized upon getting into the Slack app that it's invite only, and doesn't quite give you the contact information of the person that you would need to ask for the invite. It is?! I don't remember being invited by someone. Maybe I was and don't remember. Sorry I wasted your time (and hard drive space) with that whole process!
