Floor counts don't always dictate a certain height, it can all depend on the ceiling heights per floor- what utilities might be between floors, and the age and use of the building.  For instance- One Cleveland Center is about 450' tall and has 31 floors.  The Hilton has 32 floors and is only 374' tall.  Key Tower is almost 1,000 feet tall (This does include a spire & crown) and has 57 floors- but there are some buildings that height that have 80+ floors.

Here's a shot from Tuesday from the 26th floor of 1111 Superior ... amazing how different it appears without the crane. I keep doing double takes, lol.

Keep in mind, the last two floors of the Lumen are 22' tall which is approximately double the height of the floors being poured last night.  Last nights pour was for 26, so technically there are 10 deck pours left.

This is interesting.  The Keith Building has 21 floors.  The Lumen is currently at the same height as the roof of the Keith (The Keith's "22nd floor"?) but has 25 floors?

Is that correct?

Buildings can have very different floor heights. I've noticed modern hotel and apartment high-rises usually have a smaller average floor-height, but it still varies.

^ apparently good manners and polite language don't either

It doesn't block the view of the B.F. Keith Building though!

Terdoplph, sometimes blockages are good as it pertains to hiding ugly Buildings. Case in point is the the Justice Center that is blocked by  the Hilton from the east. I noticed that watching the orchestra last night from on top the sloped mall. The Beacon looks great from that vantage point btw!

Which building in downtown has the most stories?

The public library!!!

I'll show myself out.

It would be a beautiful addition to Terdolph Park!

Much better location than downtown. The brutalist design makes thematic sense when you consider the denizens within . That's not the issue. it's where its located presently.

So refreshing.

The Lumen will be such a beautiful and classy addition to the CLE skyline.

My own feeble contribution....

Beautiful indeed.

I love this building! I really appreciate the contemporary design, and how it pays homage to its context by reflecting the beauty of its neighbors. I would expect nothing less Fromm the Playhouse Square Foundation. This building will fill up so fast that I would be surprised if The Foundation has not already begun planning for the next phase.

KJP, thank you so much for your awesome photographic contributions!

From what I hear, they are considering it. I even wrote about it, here: http://neo-trans.blogspot.com/2019/05/seeds-sprouts-early-intel-on-real.html

Thanks for the compliment, but I yield to The Master, MayDay.

KJP: In your seeds and sprouts blog you wrote that the Cowell & Hubbard building was built so that it could do an 8 floor vertical addition.

i could have sworn that in the playhouse theater thread somebody mentioned that it was 15-20 stories. Also, in that thread somebody mentioned that there is 1 or 2 other buildings on euclid that were built to accomadate a vertical expansion. Is there any interest by any of these building owners to do what appears to be a big success with the 515 beacon building.

That would be great news for us fans of Ichabod the Crane’s Twitter feed ?

I got that from a Playhouse Square source, that C&H can accommodate another 8 stories above it and the reason why they don't develop it. Also, you're right about another building that can be built upon in Playhouse Square but I don't remember which one. I have it in my notes though. I can check later today.

I think the other is 1255 Euclid (Sterling Lindner ). I believe the owner at one time was floating a 12 story expansion?

Someone also mentioned that the building that Dwellworks is in at 1317 Euclid is built for possible vertical expansion.

This is next door door Cowell & Hubbard building at 1305 Euclid.   Is this all one complex like the

John Hartness Brown buildings or is this 2 different ownership groups?

Any idea when we will hear updates on this or a pre-leasing timeline? They still don’t have a website.

I work in the building - think it was built for 10 stories total but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

We were driving into downtown Saturday night for PHQ's Silent Disco (go to it if you can make the next one!!!), and almost all of the stories were lit up with construction lighting. Holy crap it looked awesome! Was going to get a pic, but wouldn't have done it justice.

Do you happen to know anything about the two empty retail storefronts on Euclid- I thought one of them was supposed to be a Chase Bank?

It's a blurry live cam screen cap and the building is quite dark, but I couldn't resist messing with that view. Might be short a foot or so

Great photo and massing illustration, Pleco!

This photo would be great to use as a basis to add all of the new buildings that are either under construction or planned, as it would be interesting to see what the enhanced skyline will look like from this eastern vantage point.

Well, she's now above the horizon line for us here on the 26th floor of 1111 Superior! Taken this morning.

Transformative building!

Already improving the city atmosphere of CSU with more floors to go. It will look great from the campus when finished!

Downtown could use ten more of these. It has a great impact!

Actually makes a significant dent on the skyline for a change!

There's more than a half-dozen skyline changers on the drawing boards.

Is this inside information in addition to what's already in the works or are you just restating facts? ?

Whoever lives in one of the west facing top floors is going to have one hell of a view of downtown. Too bad they couldn't incorporate a restaurant at the top of it like Bar 32 in the Hilton. Would have been great for theater goers.

A little bit of both. There are some projects in the embryonic stage.

Besides the much talked about  possible Sherwin Wiliams headquarters on the Jacob lot, do any of these projects in the “embryonic“ stage approach 500’ ? (Wishful thinking lol).

Not that I'm aware of.

To echo what I posted in the JHB comments, brought my DSLR to work today and got some shots after- Lumen is too tall to really be standing under it expecting a full shot-what a great problem to have! ?

I am that person who mentioned the height potential for C&H. In 1958, a developer named Wygamore proposed building a twenty story building above the Cowell & Hubbard Building during  Cleveland’s mini building boom of that year. Why do you say that anything on top would be eight floors. Have the Playhouse Square people investigated this in a thorough manner such as digging up any files on the 1958 proposal and its supporting engineering studies? It was in all the papers when it happened.

Because that's what a Playhouse Square Foundation construction-engineering source told me about C&H, a building that they own. The same source also told me the detailed tax-law reason why PHS hasn't developed it. So there.

A wide-angle lens is a good friend to have when this sort of problem arises. ? Great photos BTW!

Or if you have a phone with pano mode here's a tip:  Put it on pano mode and flip your phone horizontally to pan up with it. ? Here's a photo of Lumen I captured doing just that.

fullsizeoutput_3f62.jpeg

Well maybe Mr Wygamore got schnookered by his consultants. Maybe that is the reason it was never built. More likely, however, was the state of his finances. I do remember seeing a rendering of a 20 story (or so) building in the newspapers back in 1958. So, the C & H building will remain a two story building looking like an anomaly downtown.

Edited by fgerlak

I would love to see the 1958 rendering.
