Well maybe Mr Wygamore got schnookered by his consultants. Maybe that is the reason it was never built. More likely, however, was the state of his finances. I do remember seeing a rendering of a 20 story (or so) building in the newspapers back in 1958. So, the C & H building will remain a two story building looking like an anomaly downtown.

Maybe someone can find the article in the Cleveland Press or Plain Dealer archives at the Cleveland Public Library.

Here's a shot from Tuesday from the 26th floor of 1111 Superior ... amazing how different it appears without the crane. I keep doing double takes, lol.

That's my memory as well.

What an awesome project!

Kudos to the PHSF for having the vision and determination to move this project forward.

Leave it to Playhouse Square to set the bar in this city.... in residential tower construction.... lol

If a McDonald's ends up in the retail space, I don't think it's the end of world.  Don't @ me.

I was out and about today...  got some nice pictures of the Lumen from some new angles.

A couple of fun attempts with the pano technique described by @ASPhotoman above. The effect is cool and slightly whimsical ?

^ and kinda creepy..  haha

The windows are at the perfect height to fit the entire reflection. It kinda looks like they're building ontop of Keith.

Hey!! Is that a fisheye lens you have on your phone there? ? Nice shots!

^^^ Thanks! No fisheye, just my iPhone camera. The slightly concave look is the result of my inability to keep the guide arrow straight while panning skyward. ?

I'm afraid that's as far as it pans up... Seeing as the horizon is perfectly centered in the shot. I wish they would have mounted the camera on a different building.

Instead of another pic of the building itself, here's the view from a construction worker at the lumen.IMG_5126.thumb.jpg.cec5bfcf5f7dff876e1c95a52c23ac10.jpg

What is that hanging of the top of the tower?  Looks like a giant mailbox flag.

Perhaps it's a silly question, but walking in today and hearing and seeing all the work going on, is there an estimate for how many day to day workers there are on site?

Cleveland is starting to look like a real city.

I count 27 floors. Only 7 more to go.

The transformation of Euclid over the last ten years is simply remarkable.  The only thing missing are places to shop.

Nice. It's moving along so fast. I took some shots of the construction progress when I was there a few weeks ago. Downtown looks amazing.  Keep up the great work Cleveland. :)

Cleveland has always looked like a real city and has since July 22, 1796.

^don't think I've ever seen that angle.  Great pic (nice lens!)

You sure?? Here's a photo I took of Cleveland on July 23, 1796 with the Pentax I brought from Connecticut... ?

Having been born in CLE and having spent most of my adult life in NYC, I was always amazed at how, despite being a suburban commute to NYC, people from CT always sound like native Clevelanders vs others from the NE.

I’m absolutely sure! That’s when Cleveland was actually “The Forest City” because there was still forest:)

They were doing about two floors a week but it's slowed down.

Well, technically a real city since 1836–still nearly 200 years.

I’d expect the Lumen to be topped off in mid/late October, if not sooner.

Good timing to get the building glassed-in for winter and interior work.

I think you’re just doing this to get a rise out of people now.

I live in Tampa, but regularly follow up on the construction goings-on in Cleveland (my home town). Anyways, can anyone explain to me the point of the long vertical stripes on the building? I can't judge them in person as I am in Florida. However, does anyone (who has seen the building in person) let me know if they actually look good or just as bad as they do in the pictures? Thanks!

Here’s the original proposal:

One of the review committees told them the design needed to be improved. They also told them that the garage must have first floor retail. (The original design was “display windows” in front of garage spots “that could be converted to retail.”)  Playhouse Square made changes to accommodate those requests, and the updated design was approved.

I think the updates are a big improvement. I do not expect it to be on the short list of best Cleveland buildings, but it will be a very nice addition to the city.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Great post by Boomerang- very enlightening (pun intended)

I know opinions will vary - I happen to think the revised design is more unique and generally dressier.  As any theatrical performer knows, better to make an impression - one way or another. The revision, to me, says “theatre district” more than “office”.  I’m sure that was the idea..
