IDK if I remember correctly but isn't Cleveland's bedrock pretty "shallow" as in it's relatively close to the street surface compared to other cities?

No. It's much deeper, which explains the number of 350'-400' skyscrapers we have along East 9th street. It's much more expensive to build taller in Cleveland, which is why we only have four skyscrapers taller than 500'.

Here's a shot from Tuesday from the 26th floor of 1111 Superior ... amazing how different it appears without the crane. I keep doing double takes, lol.

No, downtown it's around 175 feet.  I believe the Lumen site is approximately 189'.  Once you get to about E93rd and Carnegie, it starts rising quickly.  Some of the CCF buildings in the E 80s are on matts that are no where near the rock depth, while UH buildings near 105th are bearing on rock at about 15 feet deep.

Another reason why we may see more high-rises in/near University Circle -- sorry, getting off topic.

They were already pile driving this past Tuesday, unless they were sampling... I think we will have the majority of the foundations up before the beginning of June. Certainly an abrupt project.

They're probably pile driving the shoring they'll need to dig the foundation pit to start the foundations. Without the shoring the ground/foundations under Euclid, East 17th, The Hanna Building and the alley to the south would all cave in.

Once the shoring is in, they will excavate the pit and start driving the piers that will hold the tower. We did a study on the soils there, and much like all the other taller towers in Cleveland this one I do believe needs to have foundations on bedrock.

Pile driving example #1....

Yep,

The shoring to keep the excavation from caving in is pictured there.

You can see evidence of that in New York City too.  That's why there are concentrations of skyscrapers near Battery Park, then several blocks of low-rise buildings, then back to the Empires and Chrysler type skyscrapers.

^Yeah, the Downtown to Midtown skylines are met with a distinct gap of buildings all smaller than 15 stories.

yeah what i have seen is that what is required for a foundation really varies by a lot of factors, ie., the site, building specs, gravity loads, lateral loads, soil, bedrock level, etc.. for example, empire state only required digging 55 ft, but a mere seven story hotel by a soft riverfront bed somewhere required 175ft.

that's cool to know you can build tall much more easily as you go east and around uc --

All the more reason to wonder why Playhouse Square chose to build a totally new building, requiring caissons to bedrock, for its first residential high-rise rather than build on top of its Cowell & Hubbard building that was designed and built to support a much taller building.

I believe this building will not have pilings but will be placed on a “floating” concrete slab. This is a typical foundation for Cleveland buildings that are 400 feet or less. Taller buildings must be placed on pilings driven to bedrock. However, I believe, the Hilton Hotel was built on piles. In the 400’ range, the foundation could be either except pilings are much more expensive.

It's already been stated that The Lumen will be built on caissons to bedrock.

Well so be it! Foundation technology has advanced the slab foundation to carrying taller buildings. This makes it a choice for whatever reasons. The master of skyscraper foundations in Cleveland, Mr. Lewin, told me that at the excavation for the National City Bank Building many years ago as he was supervising the pour of the slab.

See, it's really not that hard guys

You forgot the underground part!

^^ RTA just credited BRT Healthine for spurring your project.

Construction progress on Lumen, the 34-story apartment tower in Playhouse Square. They're pile driving the walls for the basement foundation. And a lot of kids were out in force in PHS.

For reference, KJP's third picture shows the Keith Building across Euclid from The Lumen construction.  The Lumen is expected to be 34 floors, but The Keith Building is only 21 floors.

Wow. This building is gonna be yuge.

I heard today that they're expecting to have 10-12 floors done by the end of August. Am I the only one that thinks that's overly optimistic??

So i have a friend that lives right across from the construction sight..  i have her sending me pics daily!  here is yesterdays.

According to PHS Instagram post a few weeks ago, it wont even begin coming out of the ground till late august

^^ I never noticed the extent of the void that this surface lot created.

And we expect pic's daily! lol

Or just set up a webcam :P

epic viewpoint thanks !!

Excavators have uncovered something while removing dirt for the foundation of the new Lumen tower. Lots of speculation on Twitter...

I love watching the construction across from my office and find it fascinating. Not everyone gets it, but can we all agree that today’s discovery is wildly exciting?! What have they uncovered?! I like to think it’s the hatch from lost and Desmond is down there keeping us alive.

@KateWarrenCLE

Other possibilities:

-The actual crypt of Marcus Hanna

-A vault or secret treasure trove of some kind

-A time capsule

-Most realistic option: something to do with HVAC

Now accepting submissions for what this thing could be! We may never know for sure!

@TomHorsman

It looks like that was the old location of a Central National Bank branch. Perhaps a vault of some kind?

I dunno, maybe George Willey had a basement Ziggurat?

It could be the foundation of the annex building that was demolished in 2012.

A vault you say?

The vault under the former Jewish Community Center (where the Edge now sits) was MASSIVE. I remember it took them 3-4 days just to excavate it

When they were building the new WKYC-TV3 building on Lakeside, they were pouring concrete for a foundation. But the concrete kept pouring and pouring and pouring. Finally they stopped to look and see what was going on and found that they were filling in a massive, brick-lined underground vault for a old brewery that hadn't been there since the 1800s. So they kept on pouring more cement until it filled in. Someday, someone is going find this huge concrete underground slab structure lined with old bricks and be very confused.

U know he lives in the area now right? He could be interested lol

There may be an mjarboe[/member] article about this discovery. Excavators also found an old foundation wall along East 17th. Interesting because this section of East 17th was built only about 10 years ago.

What, no speculations about finding Jimmy Hoffa down there??

Still digging downward before they start building upward...

Sorry for the crappy drive-by shooting, but it looks like they've got the basement walls/supports in place and are now excavating out the remainder of the dirt for the basement.

I really love this development. Does anyone have a rendering of how it’s going to look in our skyline? A full skyline view. Thanks

As a matter of fact, I've made one a couple of months ago encompasing NuCLEus, 515, Lumen, The Edge, and the Hilton wasn't included so i tried to fit that in there... We fill in quite nicely!

Wow that’s awesome  :) Thank You

I don't think you'll ever have to worry about seeing that version of it in our skyline.

I always thought it would look better if it wasn't "cinched in" at the waist. Let that horizontal mezzanine flair out.
