My God>  Nucleus is the absolute ugliest building ever proposed in Cleveland.

Ummm, Ok

^Oh boy... You're not the architect are you?

One does not need to be a architect to have a valid opinion, just as one does not need be a musician to have good taste in music!

Here's a shot from Tuesday from the 26th floor of 1111 Superior ... amazing how different it appears without the crane. I keep doing double takes, lol.

Nice progress

great shot thanks!

do i see a bit of piling in the ground there?

if so, that makes it officially u/c.

do i see a bit of piling in the ground there?

I don't think so -- that concrete right up against the Hanna building was uncovered, not recently poured.  And it looks like they're driving retaining walls in front of those concrete structures.

yeah the steel looks to be for more retaining and on closer inspection the yellow thing is just equipment sitting on the ground and on the far right is i guess just a drainage pipe.

work seems to be moving along at a pretty steady rate though, so i hope we can get more regular updates.

Nice webcam

Wow that's a clear webcam lol

compared to all the buildings it will hide behind that alley, it has quite a large footprint

So when should we see The Lumen begin rising above ground?

First foundations to be lay in october if I'm right, correct me if i'm wrong? There's still some extra site prep they need to do before they methodically pile drive.

It was stated upthread that the crane should be in the sky in August

I don't think that's the case anymore. I think we're looking October-November.

I would expect to see concrete walls/foundation floors in place before that. In fact, I don't think they've even put the foundation pad in place yet, have they?

Not to my (limited) knowledge

As much as I don't like seeing threads going off topic, I think the following photos of the Hilton construction might help put things in perspective.

March 7, 2014

End of the "moving dirt around" phase, note how the site is smoothed out (Lumen site isn't at this point yet):

April 17,2014

Caisson drilling equipment has been set up:

May 9, 2014

Caisson drilling well underway:

July 16, 2014

We finally see the first portion of the tower crane (far right of photo), and by the end of July the first phase of the tower crane was in place:

That was on topic...and depressing! So we could be looking at December or January before the tower crane makes its appearance?

Are they using caissons or a pad to support the Lumen?

The article also states that Cleveland new construction costs are equal to Chicago?

That's probably true. Is there a way to reduce them? Probably deserves its own thread.

I'm not sure if I believe it. Chicago has some interesting building codes that add costs to construction. But construction is not my area of expertise.

This project is really going to bring life and more energy to that area and I can envision it in our skyline everyday I’m driving on I-90. It’s going to be an awesome site.

From the Lumen webcam, it looks like the next phase of construction is beginning - caisson drilling!  :)

5 months for excavation is much longer than I expected. Crane might be up by the end of the year?

I remember they were thinking August for the crane to be constructed. Doesn't look like that's going to happen

^^

"“We’re not building on farmland, we’re building on structures in an incredibly active section of Euclid Avenue during the late 1800s and early 1900s,” he says. “It’s not a surprise that you’d find something left. It’s a matter of what you will uncover.”"

And that's on *top* of the issues with construction/excavation when it comes to downtown (glacial sediment, till, etc.) - our forumers in the geotechnical field are welcome to chime in.

I walked by today because I'm overly nosey and why not... one of the guys walking to Corbo's told me they think they'll start actual construction in early October with the crane coming somewhere near Thanksgiving to Christmas

How long will the crane stay up at the beacon? Will we have two cranes in the air at the same time?

I don’t understand this obsession with cranes. It’s the finished product that counts.

Because they look like progress

^ I’ll take any building being built in Cleveland as a sign of progress, crane or no crane.

Because they look like progress

I read an article about a year ago about the psychological impact cranes have on investors. They had a cool anecdote about Austin, when people came into town, they felt they were in the right place because they could see a crane in every direction, and felt more confident investing.

WOW. That is significantly more prominent than I anticipated

Shiny. Definitely shiny. Definitely.

LOVE IT!!!

BEAUTIFUL

Awesome rendering of the Lumen! Cant wait to see see it rising - Love the view (except for Burke Airport sitting on the city’s lakefront)

Quick question for the construction experts....if you look at the Lumens web cam, it looks like they are done drilling the caissons?  Everything is cleared out?
