I assume there will still be some kind of small police station somewhere downtown after the new HQ is completed.

There is one on E. 45th and Chester.

It's the Third district, that's who covers downtown

We still maintain a presence at public safety central which is on Payne just north of CSU.

I will never not be disappointed that that building was not refurbed into the new HQ.

I know that place well...was glad the medical unit was moved there from HQ

I would expect any new Justice Center would have some sort of small CPD outpost?

Oh the medic unit. What's that? Four doctors have cleared you to come back? Okay, we will clear you in a month.

Former Plain Dealer building

What the absolute f***!?!?

I'll give them a pass if all this turns up being because of some monumental plans in another part of the city, but barring that this is an embarrassment.

They give the inflationary environment as one reason for reevaluating. Well that is one reason you should build this thing NOW instead of whenever they get their sh*t together.

I thought construction had already started. Maybe they can put new police HQ and jail on the Transport Rd site.

I never liked the OC site for the police headquarters. They should've pulled the trigger on the Plain Dealer site when they had the chance.

I thought the were losing money every day they stayed in the justice center. now they're delaying 4 months with no explanation besides 'due diligence'

A rushed groundbreaking ceremony was held so Frank Jackson could say that construction was started on his watch. Guess not. 🤔

The Plain Dealer location makes a lot of sense.

This here.  Historic building, downtown location.  Except for not being historic, the PD building makes sense as well.

I wonder if the city prefers a building that is more fortified vs one that is potentially vulnerable?  Perhaps that's why they backed out of the deal to move to the PD building.

Is there anyway they could operate a combined justice campus with the county on the transport rd site?

That's not going to happen.  The judges (and the lawyers) want the courthouse downtown.

They should at least put the jail and police HQ on the same site.  I would think building both on one site would cost less than building on separate sites.

Nothing's going on at the OC site (aside from the project board being updated to say Justin Bibb, Mayor on the sign), also biked through the area where the new stables are going to go (I guess?) and there's noooooooo work except for a catch basin.

Here's a photo from what's left of Chadakoin St. (where the stable is supposed to go). @freefourur here's a dropped pin of the street https://goo.gl/maps/7BuVFFtQCaPUVMEF8.

Where is that photo from exactly?

I'm told the Department of Homeland Security killed the idea at the last minute. Apparently it had something to do with the building having multiple non-police users and multiple access points.

Zoom in on that ex-neighborhood on satellite view. It's a street grid without a neighborhood. At least the city keeps the grass cut to keep it from turning back into forest for the first time in 200+ years.

Perhaps the police HQ could be located here too?

City of Cleveland seeks proposals for alternative police headquarters sites

The city of Cleveland is seeking proposals for a new police headquarters, two months after confirming that a planned project along Opportunity Corridor is on hold.

On Monday, Oct. 31, Mayor Justin Bibb's administration sent out a request for proposals to property owners, developers and real estate brokers. The 57-page document outlines a swift turnaround time. Officials want responses by noon on Nov. 14.

The city has not ruled out proceeding with a ground-up construction project on East 75th Street, on vacant land in the Kinsman neighborhood. But officials have been considering other possibilities, including existing buildings much closer to downtown that could be renovated to allow for a much faster move out of the county-owned Justice Center complex.

Put the police HQ and jail on Transport Rd site.

So, in order to secure a faster move, we're going to put everything on hold and put things back out for proposals?

And they will need to bring in a few consultants to evaluate potential locations.

Just put this thing in the Plain Dealer building and be done with it.

How much would it cost to bring it up to needed security standards?   At least it should be generally ADA compliant since it was built after implementation, but would it be for public access?

I believe that they already did an analysis on the site and then Mayor Jackson pulled out of that agreement. I wonder if that information is available somewhere.

TRW Clarkwood was over there, we used to sell them metal until they decided some hard spots in it came from our process no matter what the world's foremost aluminum metallurgist told them.  Other similar decisions closed the place down.

Also Ashland Chemical.   I remember being told that the houses over there housed workers at those plants, especially during and right after the war.   They got beat up, or they were older and not built to last.   Some of it was also light industrial.

Police HQ should be downtown, no question.  Maybe the PD bldg, though its far from the courts, but 1000x better than Opportunity Corridor.

The city was all ready to go with the PD building but Homeland Security put the kibosh on it at the last minute. The reason was never publicized.

Seems like an awful lot of SF for a police headquarters - And that design seems excessive.  Why not renovate the existing building and expand if needed?

Why don’t they rehab the old police station on Payne and do a new build on the adjacent lots?

Cleveland police HQ site search begins anew
By Ken Prendergast / November 2, 2022

Officials at Cuyahoga County and now at City Hall are having difficulty deciding where to build their new venues for addressing crime. Three years ago, an effort began in earnest to find a new home for Cuyahoga County’s new jail campus and a new courthouse tower. A steering committee set up to decide that course of action has failed to settle on a site for those facilities in that time. But the city’s efforts to find a new home for its Cleveland Police Department (CPD) Headquarters has been going on for even longer and will continue for at least a few months more, following an announcement today by Mayor Justin Bibb’s administration.

Plain Dealer site: only issue seems to be other tenants.  Couldn't the city just buy out the leases? That should be less expensive than new construction.

And perhaps vulnerability at that location.  Homeland Security would probably favor a more bunker-like facility.

Oh man, reading this is an exercise in seeing just how NEO leaders kick themselves over and over. Most notably the portion about how they made money from the sale of HQ and all of that jazz. To borrow a line from South Park ...annnnnnd it's gone.

Our taxpayer-funded “Steering Committee”….

Sure...it's a clown show but ultimately this delay may turn out to be good news IF the headquarters ends staying downtown where I want to see it. I never thought moving it out was a good idea in the first place.

Man, what's that expression? Cleveland, you gotta be tough? Yes we do.

True.  Keeping those jobs downtown would be good for the food, beverage and other establishments in the vicinity.
