I'm hearing more and more about the candidates in this race, so I was very surprised there wasn't already a thread started on this topic.

 

Incumbent Sherrod Brown will be seeking a 3rd term as Ohio Senator. Josh Mandel, State Treasurer, has also announced he will again challenge Brown for his seat. Mandel lost to Brown in the 2012 Senate race. Democrat Brown won with 50.7%, Republican Mandel had 44.7% and Independent Scott Rupert had 4.6%, according to wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_election_in_Ohio,_2012

Michael Gibbins will challenge Mandel in a Republican primary, and it's possible that U.S. Representative Pat Tiberi could join the race with a good chunk of money he's already raised. There have also been rumors that best selling author, J.D. Vance might throw his hat in the GOP ring.

I know it's early, but there have already been some polls and Mandel has been ahead. Hopefully that's just because Brown hasn't really started campaigning yet.

Mandel is already off to a bad start getting admonished online for siding with Alt-right trolls.  He is gonna try to ride the Trump wave that has already crashed.  But I guess those of us in Ohio are always behind the trends.

That's what I thought, but it seems Mandel is way out in front of Trump on this type of behavior. As far back as 2010 Mandel was calling his African American opponent, Kevin Boyce a Muslim in the race for State Treasurer. Boyce is not a Muslim.

He accused Boyce of insider dealings, the same thing he is accusing Brown of doing.

It's probably not a bad strategy given the fact that Trump carried Ohio with one of the biggest victory margins in nearly three decades.

Mandel wont defeat brown, the only person who could take Brown down would be Portman (theoretically) at this point. Obviously that wont happen.

Cleveland literally watched Mandel sell his soul from establishment GOP candidate into becoming a whore for populist rhetoric. The man is a career politician elected with his family's money. He is the swamp.

Pod Save America episode from last month in Cleveland.  They interviewed Sherrod Brown and his wife and played a fun game with Mandel quotes (believe the game was called "Breitbart or Mandel?").  Interview starts at 46:30.

 

-Who promoted a tweet that said "I stand with Israel and my Judeo-Christian culture and I find Islam offensive?"

 

-In a conversation about sexism in the tech industry, who said there's no bias against women they just suck at interviews?

 

-Who came to the defense of an alt-right misogynist behind PizzaGate when the Anti-Defamation league called him out as a bigot?

 

-Who posted an unsubstantiated three year old story about kids getting beaten at an Ohio mosque for failing to read the Quran?

The article mentions Taylor and Renacci ... and I have to admit, I don't know either of them that well.

 

I do know, however, that they are different than Josh Mandel.  That likely means they're an improvement based on general laws of statistics.

Honestly, what an awful thing to say. I honestly can't believe I'm even defending Josh Mandel who is likely my least favorite Ohio-wide candidate in history.

 

This reaction is why I am politically homeless. Here I am, a fiscally conservative, socially liberal white male who doesn't like Donald Trump, pretty much begging to be pulled back into the Democratic fray and yet this petty BS persists. If you believe your policy is better then be the better person.

On issues of trade, Sherrod Brown and Donald Trump (or perhaps I should say candidate Donald Trump) actually have more in common than either might admit.  Those issues are high-salience (i.e., more likely to determine actual vote) to a decent chunk of blue-collar Ohio, even those who might be more traditionalist on other issues where Brown is more progressive.  Sight unseen, I'm guessing there are a lot of Ohioans who voted for both Brown and Trump.

Brown would have a good shot at POTUS (wouldn't be my preference). But he's widely popular with blue collar workers and has a progressive enough agenda to win over the Left. He gave my commencement speech and I was fortunate enough to speak with him. I disagree with him on a lot but he came off as a very genuine and kind guy.

 

Honestly, the biggest thing standing between him and a run at POTUS is his appearance. Buy a comb, Sherrod, and button your collar.

I think you touched on something too.  I think he is genuine and it might be why I like him.  I don;t believe for a second that trump is genuine about his concern for working class but I think the Sherrod is.  I don;t agree with him on trade but I think he actually believes in it because he actually cares about workers.

Given his vote for the tax plan do you really agree with him on fiscal issues?  Seems to me he's all talk on being fiscally responsible with no real principals of the sort.

Portman is inoffensive, but the past year has made me really dislike him. He seems to just want to hide away, never wants to open his mouth at all let alone take the lead on a key issue (except opiate crisis which while important, doing something about it is pretty noncontroversial). We never get any town halls, he never comes out strongly for or against anything, we never have any idea what he's thinking. The headlines always say "Marco Rubio wants x" or "Bob Corker wants Y" or "Ted Cruz said Z." And McCain, Collins, Flake, Murkowski etc... but never, ever Rob Portman. Maybe he's working it behind the scenes but it appears that he isn't.

 

It's like we aren't even being represented at all. I noticed this behavior with the Obamacare repeal saga but truthfully, it's how he always comports himself. At the end of the day, I'd rather have him than a Trumpublican, but seriously, do something man.

 

Don't know if there will be strong competition. Headwinds are not in GOP favor, Mandel lost 6 years ago. To do so again is political suicide and he would be finished. He is going to sit back and wait for another opportunity to run for a different seat. Maybe a viable challenger will surface with less to lose politically than Mandel, but he did this as a calculated political move so he could have a future.

I can confirm that his wife does indeed have serious health issues. So let's all be kind (not calling you out KJP[/member]) and just wish her well and move on from this point.

 

I can also confirm that Mandel and his staffers have never left their fraternity. The guy employed his friends as staff at every position he's held. He encapsulates "the swamp"

I can confirm that Josh's wife does have some health issues.

 

I can ALSO confirm that his wife's health was NOT the reason Josh Mandel dropped out of the Senate race. I anticipate the story will be out within a week or so.

Marines remember him carrying lens-cleaning supplies for no reason in his commercials. I say that's it.

midwest democrats are best sticking to economic issues.  I think Trump and the GOP will try to bait culture war issues due to the new era of conservative victimhood.  It will be best to for dems. to not fall into the trap.
