Posted October 1, 20177 yr santiago, chile we spent a week here off and on --- a great city -- check it out! :banger: wiki sez: Santiago de Chile, or simply Santiago, is the capital and largest city of Chile as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas. It is the center of Chile's largest and the most densely populated conurbation. The city is entirely located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above mean sea level. The 2015 population was 7,314,176 and the density was 8,470/km2 (21,925/sq mi). Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santiago is the cultural, political and financial center of Chile and is home to the regional headquarters of many multinational corporations. The Chilean executive and judiciary are located in Santiago, but Congress meets mostly in nearby Valparaíso. Santiago is named after the biblical figure St. James. Santiago will host the 2023 Pan American Games. pajaritos barrio lastarria parque forestal plaza baquedano mapocho river barrio bellavista patio bellavista (2006) castillo rojo (1923) la chascona -- poet pablo neruda’s santiago casa museum https://fundacionneruda.org/en/museums-houses/la-chascona-museum-house/ around bellavista -- this is santo’s main touristic/nightlife neighborhood well alrighty noww! ayyyyy -- oh -- way -- to -- go -- o -- hi -- o -- ! around plaza de armas catedral metropolitania de santiago old central post office around mercado central the popular mote con huesillo drink (wheat with peaches) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mote_con_huesillo centro cultural estacion mapocho (1913-1987; 1994) la piojera -- santiago’s wonderfully charming oldest tavern (1896)

October 1, 20177 yr I've heard from many folks that they preferred Santiago over Buenos Aires. Thoughts? "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 2, 20177 yr ^ i guess you haven't been to los angeles or ny then? contrary to popular belief, we still get them fairly often. however, yes the santiago smog is often severe. the city sits in a wide bowl surrounded by mountains, which is quite stunning to fly in and out of. unfortunately, as beautiful a setting as that is, is as much as nature is against a city being there. that's not stopping its boom though. funny how it remains pretty unsung for seven and a half million people in 250 square miles and growing. I've heard from many folks that they preferred Santiago over Buenos Aires. Thoughts? hmm, that's kind of like comparing los angeles to paris. i couldn't choose. both santiago and buenos aires are great, safe and friendly places to visit and have their charms, but both are very different. i would say that for americans visiting that santo feels more familiar and bs as feels more foreign, so there is that factor. its nice to have the mountains so close at hand in santiago, but its also nice to have the consistently cleaner air in bs as. there is certainly plenty to do in both cities. i would recommend that a good week long visit in each is about ideal. btw they say the air is actually supposed to be better in santiago in summer than in winter, when the inversion is at its worst.
October 2, 20177 yr Stellar tour of Santiago! I've been wanting to go visit there as part of a ski trip in August. Never realized how massive of a city it is.
October 2, 20177 yr Stellar tour of Santiago! I've been wanting to go visit there as part of a ski trip in August. Never realized how massive of a city it is. thanks. yes most people i spoke with about this trip said the same thing. it seems santiago is really best known in the states to skiers. its very easy to fly in and go right up to the ski resorts, they are not far away. we also did a day trip up in the andes to cajon del maipo, which is spectacular. i'll make a little thread on that when i can.
