St. Louis is making fun of us?

Unless you read the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week, you probably didn't know there was a war going on between the Gateway City and the Queen City. Columnist Bill McClellan identifies Cincinnati as the "enemy," basing this out-of-nowhere notion on the fact Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores bought out the hometown favorite, May Co., and that the owners of the St. Louis Cardinals hail from our town. Or something like that.

So dismissive, McClellan cleverly misspells "Cincinnatti" throughout his piece. (To read it, go to www.stltoday.com, click on link to Bill McClellan and go to "More Columns.")

I knew there was a conspiracy! ;)

*edited to keep the peace* ;)

Talk about someone who needed something to write about.  I'm not from Cincy, so I could care less about personal attacks, but what does he mean by "enemies"?  I didn't know any cities in the US were "enemies" to each other.

Being from Cleveland, I'd say that Pittsburgh is our rival on the football field, but I have nothing against the city or it's people.  I would never consider them an "enemy".

Now this guy is a straight up St. Louis hoosier.  It is official, St. Louis is Cincinnati's bitch.

Funny he mentions Olive Garden, I don't even think we have an Olive Garden in the city.

KMOX is a big station in St. Louis but has never been as big nor as important as WLW (The Nation's Station).  The only station in the world to have at one time broadcast in 500,000 watts.

Certainly, not a river as large or important as ours.

Yes because St. Louis has such a vibrant riverfront...  LOL  St. Louis has one of the most pathetic riverfronts of any major river city in this country.

As someone that moved from St. Louis 3 years ago I can tell you there is no contest that St. Louis is inferior to Cincinnati.

So this guy's saying that St. Louis can't hold on to anything?  That's not the fault of Cincinnati, it's the fault of the people of St. Louis.

anyway they got it wrong.

deny it all they want, but kansas city is the natural enemy of st. louis.

Wow C-Dawg, I am surprised you had something positive to say about The Queen!

Unless you read the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week, you probably didn't know there was a war going on between the Gateway City and the Queen City.
Or if you ever read the SSP Midwest forum...

What a dumb article. I think the people of St. Louis are getting a little to cocky about their new ballpark, and this is why they think they can put down other peoples cities. I would bet that Cincy has twice as many fortune 500 companies as St. Louis.

On the other hand, at least he is not bashing his own city, like all of the Plain Dealer reporters.

^ From what I understand he does bash his city and is a Cubbys fan that originated from Chicago.

Yeah, when I read that article I get a little feeling that he doesn't sound so proud as well.

...which is stupid...St. Louis, at least the times I've been there, has been a kick-ass city...lots of room for improvement, just like anywhere else, but when you've got a river and that arch and that huge park (with that fantastic art museum) and that history, you've got a lot to be proud of...

I dont even feel I should grant this article a comment, but it is a no contest comparison between Cincinnati and St. Louis.  Sure I dont like their sports teams, but as the author said about Chicago I feel that Cincy is above St. Louis and should not compare itself to them.  You should always compare yourself to the best in hopes to oneday acheive that success.  The basis of the article contradicts his main goal.  He wants to put down Cincy, but his points show how Cincy has grown and improved itself at the expense of St. Louis.

I could go on and on...but enough....you get the point.

By the way St. Louis dont feel too bad Cincy companies also gobbled up companies from:  Louisville, Boston, and Salinas (California...Fresh Express), Chicago, and others...this is just over the past couple of years or so.

FYI Cincinnati has 10 fortune 500 companies and another 8 Fortune 1000 companies.  Anyone have a number for St. Louis?

anyway they got it wrong.

That seems to be the run of the various posts at those "skscraper boards".  St Louisians get pretty defensive at those sites.  Thats what I found so funny about the article, the way it mimics the urban rivalry discussions at those skyscraper boards.

But seriously, historically (in the 19th century) the "enemy" for Cincinnati was Louisville.

In fact Cincinnati buisnessmen financed the first canal around the falls at Louisville as a form of economic sabotage so as to break Louisvilles 'break-in-bulk' mercantile buisness, so the steamboats wouldnt have to stop there.

Later, after the Civil War, Cincy financed that railroad down to Chattanooga to compete with Louisville for trade in the South.

So that was the historical economic rivarly for Cincinnati from the 19th century.

Cincinnati has had rivalry historically with many cities, actually.

Boston, Dayton, Louisville, Lexington, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Chicago all come to mind.  Even Gallipolis.  Currently, the city has no rivalry, as historical ties have severed.

I have lived in Cincy most of my life.  It is the city of my birth.  I have never even given St. Louis a thought frankly.  Our rivals are our neighbors of Pittsburgh and Cleveland.  We don't care about St. Louis.  St. Louis is pathetic anyway.  Anemic skyline, sprawl, terrible riverfront.  Yuck.

^Had to be the '75 World Series.

I understand most of these rivalries, but what's the whole story behind the Boston rivalry?

After what happened in the playoffs to the Bengals, I can see the Pittsburgh-Nati rivalry as the biggest one these days. If Cleveland actually could play football, maybe they'd be a rivalry too...

The Boston rivalry came in the 1800's, when the symphonies of each city would battle for "tops."  Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, New Orleans, New York, and Philadelphia all battled "back when" before regionalism (re: westward expansion) came along.  There was a book that dealt with the idea of Christmas (and how commercially it started out) and discussed the "battlings" of Cincinnati and Boston in more detail (it was in a history class at OSU).  It was really fascinating.

Expect an article like this from the Chicago Sun-Times when Marshall Fields becomes Macy's

They might cite a "rivalry" too.  Oy...

Don't forget the Boston Globe...still rubbing the salt out of the wounds from P&Gs feast.

Yeah, the Boston Globe had a more intelligent article about Cincinnati stealing Gillette last year.  It was great!  I am pretty sure it was posted on this site.  The article in the St. Louis Dispatch is embarrassing.  That guy looks like a moron from St. Louis.  Olive Garden?  Yeah, we don't have those except in places like Fairfield.  In fact, has St. Louis ever had a 5 star restaurant?

The only Boston article I remember about Gillette/P&G was as pathetic as the St. Louis one.  Look in the Gillette thread in OB&E, it's posted there.

i would say that cinci and st. louis have similarities, but are hard for me to compare, really...but st. louis really is a great city that has fallen pretty hard, and is trying hard to get back up.

st. louis is the rival of just about every city in a 500 mile radius... icon_lol.gif many st. louisans are stuck in a time warp, i wouldnt sweat it.

This is a shock to me. I never heard that St. Louis was pissed about Cincy before, considered it a rival or worse, an enemy. Cities do have their rivals, and my hometown of Cleveland is no different. Most are based on sports, as Clevelanders often think of Pittsburgh as a rival, and used to look at New York or Chicago as rivals (or perhaps still do, but moreso with envy). Though neither Chicago or New York likely even consider Cleveland. I also think Cleveland considers Columbus an economic rival, because the city of Columbus proper had eclipsed Cleveland as Ohio's largest city. But Clevelanders don't talk about Cincinnati much, except when football is concerned.

^ Ditto...  I rarely ever hear anyone bring Cleveland up but let me tell you, Pittsburgh has become a sore subject in the Queen City of late.  The only similarity that Cincinnati & St. Louis have is that they are river towns, that is it.

Cincinnati has a gorgeous hilly terrain.

St. Louis is flat and boring

Cincinnati has a functional riverfront park system with weekly festivals

St. Louis has a national landmark on their riverfront with 1 annual festival

Cincinnati has 5 pedestrian bridges that connect the city to their river neighbors

St. Louis has one pedestrian bridge

Cincinnati has retail downtown including two department stores.

St. Louis has 1 department store and an abandoned mall and the city has far less retail options than Cincy although the city has been improving the scene over the last two years.

Cincinnati has prosperous cross river neighbors with a government that recognizes that NKY is an important part of the state.

St. Louis has very poor cross river neighbors with a government that could give two shits about the Metro East.

Cincinnati is in Eastern Time Zone

St. Louis is in Central Time Zone

Cincinnati has 5 cities within 1.5 hours of the city limits (Columbus, Dayton, Lexington, Louisville, Indianapolis)

St. Louis is 4 hours away from the next major city

Cincinnati is primarily a white collar city

St. Louis is primarily a blue collar city

Cincinnati Metro uses approx 4,000 square miles to make up a population of 2 million

St. Louis Metro uses approx 9,000 square miles to make up a population of 2.8 million

L&N, Taylor-Southgate, Roebling, Clay Wade Bailey...what's the fifth pedestrian bridge?

Oops 4 ;)

^We ran into a girl who made the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge a pedestrian bridge yesterday after her car broke down on it, so actually you were right!

if you replaced the "st. louis" with "pittsburgh" stats on monte's list cinci then would have a rival. more so than st. louis that is for sure. it's kc for them.

I have always said that Cincinnati is more like Pittsburgh then like St. Louis and I absolutely love Pittsburgh!

The author of that article, Bill McClellan, is a Chicago native, not a St. Louis native.

And please, people, it was a joke.  Lighten up.

Uh...the last post in this thread was April 4th, 2006

I'm pretty sure people have lightened up by now.
