Just a few weeks away from USA v. Mexico!!! Sooo excited Cincinnati and TQL Stadium is hosting this HUGE game. I’ve looked at tickets and they are veryyyyyy expensive.  Alot of sports media will be in town covering this match, can’t wait to see the tweets and television views of the city and stadium. I’ve heard they are going to be using some very flashy/unique lighting during the game.

The BIG game is tonight!!! hotels and such are packed! Can’t wait for the soccer world to lay eyes on Cincinnati and this stadium. Lots of red, white and blue in the city. I’ve heard the organizing teams have been blown away by the city, accommodations and TQL Stadium. Also I have a connect who works at the stadium and told me projected revenue for this game is thru the roof. Having all those suites and premium seating is paying off big time for an event like this. The city is really using this opportunity as a rehearsal of a 2026 World Cup game which is great to see, all hands on deck tonight!

“Our community is really excited about this game. Think about it. Millions of people will watch the game not only in the U.S. but in Mexico and all over the world. What an opportunity for the Queen city to shine and to welcome everybody,” said Alfonso Cornejo, President, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“We've transitioned to the best soccer-specific stadium in this country,” said Jeff Berding, President, FC Cincinnati.

I got to swing by the basin neighborhoods for a little bit over Thanksgiving and was pretty impressed with how the stadium integrated into the neighborhood.  I didn't have too much time to look at it closely, but overall I'd say its a win even if some of the actions took to build it weren't the best.

Anyone know when the World Cup host cities will be announced?

Nope. Deadline keeps getting pushed back. Originally I think it was supposed to be this time last year, but site visits got pushed back significantly due to covid (site visits are done, though).

Last I heard it was supposed to be Q1/Q2 of 2022. So theoretically by the end of June.

Alicia Reece said in yesterday's County Commissioners meeting (in the context of a conversation about a proposed convention center hotel): "I understand that FC is building a hotel near Over-the-Rhine". No other details were mentioned, but I think this is the closest I've heard to an "official" announcment regarding FCC's plans for a hotel:

This is separate from the hotel that did not get approvals across from the stadium?

I think this semi-confirms, or at least lends credence to, the rumors that the hotel across from the stadium has been delayed and didn't get approval because of FCC wanting their own hotel to be the first/only.

Idk why they’d want to be the first/only there’s enough room and demand for two hotels if not more.

FC Cincinnati's TQL Stadium to be named 'Best Venue' award winner at World Football Summit in Madrid Spain

Can only imagine how much better it will get when the rest of the site is built out with the hotel, office complex and sportsbook

The stadium was rocking last Saturday for the home opener. There are high expectations for the team this year so you can bet that crowds will be big throughout the season.

One drawback of the stadium is that lines for things like concessions and restrooms are still really long if there's a big crowd. I got up to go to the restroom around the 35th minute and missed the end of the 1st half and the Houston goal.

^ you have to figure that given they control a lot of the area around the stadium, they can expand the offerings with pop up concessions to help spread out the lines. Similar to what the Reds do at the entrance before the game.

However, most stadiums have long lines for concessions during the games so I do not know if that is something that will be changing signifcantly any time soon.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

FC Cincinnati added more urinals and toilets to the men's rooms this offseason, which made a tiny dent in bathroom lines at halftime. They also added speakers to the restrooms so fans can hear the game broadcast. There are also digital ad boards and cup holders at urinals.

The new food options are pretty good but I'll miss Sam Adams beer as I don't like Moreline as much. Also, the stadium got its first championship banner GHNUErfX0AAjxER?format=jpg&name=4096x409

wait....a newer stadium was built without enough urinals? SMH.

I wasn't built without enough but they also had room to add more if needed. Unlike other sports where people can just get up and go whenever, there's usually a big halftime rush during a soccer match.

A few more details from Berding:

Quote

On the development surrounding TQL Stadium

Berding offered minor new details about the massive mixed-use development around TQL Stadium in the West End. FC Cincinnati hopes to begin demolition work north of TQL Stadium by the end of the year.

“We want to go very high and light it up,” he said, “because we’re not bound by the restrictions that are in this historic district across the street.”

A hotel will offer condominiums on the top levels, and the apartments will have “some different rents to bring an inclusive neighborhood together.”

While the first and second phases of the development will go north of the stadium, Berding confirmed a third phase south of it on the current Cincinnati Police District 1 headquarters building, which he said “at some point the city is going to relocate.”

If I didn't have 2 dogs, I'd be interested in one of those condos.

It looks like the NWSL is realistically down to Cincinnati and Cleveland for the next expansion team. All respect to Cleveland, but unless they're willing to overpay for expansion, I don't see how they get the nod this time around. There are way too many "ifs" associated with the expansion bid in Cleveland, whereas Cincinnati is ready to go. An NWSL team at TQL Stadium would bring about 20 more events to the stadium every year. I think Cincinnati is the odds-on favorite, and if they don't get the bid, I hope the FCC ownership starts a USL Super League team and poaches NWSL stars, and runs NWSL into the ground. Yes, I'm petty.

lol. I mean, even if this spot doesn't go to to Cincinnati... I have to assume NWSL will still want keep adding teams. Right? They only have 14 teams currently. Boston will join in 2026 along with one other expansion team, bringing them to 16. I don't follow NWSL at all... but I suspect the league would like to have quite a few more than 16 teams. If new ownership groups are willing to buy in, I have to believe the league will keep taking their money.

People around FC Cincinnati say they will be getting the bid fwiw.Already have stadium upgrades at TQL designed ready to be bid out. Also sounds like the women's team will have their own training facility out in Milford.

But has FCC requested and obtained the changes to their PD that will be required? There are limits on the number of events they can host each year.

I wouldn't be surprised if adding a women's team wasn't already baked into the agreements FCC has with the city/neighborhood. They've been talking about an NWSL team since the stadium plans were announced and already built a women's home locker room and everything.

If MLS moves to a Fall/Spring calendar, and NWSL stays on its summer calendar, you'll have something going on at the stadium nearly year-round.

It's not.

That is in their long term planning  a year round destination of entertainment with about 1200 residential units around the first 2-3 blocks of TQL.

Yeah no doubt a amended community benefits agreement will be in the pipeline with the new woman's franchise.FC Cincinnati ownership has paid off the Cincinnati  Ballet, Music Hall, West End Community Council tens of millions  and several others single digit millions.Just the cost of doing business for them nothing new.

It's the PD that requires an official amendment - approved by the city after public hearings.

Agreed that neighbors should ask for a new CBA - if they even want to negotiate at all, or just oppose additional nights of events at the stadium.

Interesting the Cleveland folks seem to think it’s very much a lock for them lol. Someone is very wrong lol.

I could see both bids being accepted, but maybe FCC's team starts sooner since they could theoretically start play in 2026 with the stadium already in place.

Cleveland probably does have a "promise" for a NWSL franchise.Just not a realistic path to have a expansion  team ready to play in a new stadium by 2026 in Cleveland. They do not even have the needed public funding in place to make it happen.FC is getting the bid because they do have everything in place for a team to start play in 26.

Yeah that’s what I have been perplexed by reading thru the Cleveland notes they don’t really seem ready for a 2026 team (2025 is in 6 weeks) that’s a very short window. Of course they would start out using some rental venue but even Cleveland’s permanent stadium plan looks very unbaked at this point.

I wonder if this is taking the place of the in-stadium sports book that they were planning. Since everyone bets on their phones, sports books are kind of obsolete.

Either way, as a regular season ticket holder, a speakeasy doesn't speak to me. Some big ass fans in the concourses or under the canopy however...
