January 18, 20169 yr Oh wow. That could've been a nice boutique-type retro hotel. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 19, 20169 yr The Hotel Seagate demolition is a huge mistake and giant waste of taxpayer dollars. I suspect a backdoor deal on this one given how excited Lucas County Commissioners were to tear this building down. Typical Rust Belt demolition politics... This will remain a hole for a long time, and it was an incredibly stupid decision to tear it down. The hotel was structurally sound and easily could have been renovated. I agree it would have made a nice retro boutique hotel. I've seen many mid-century buildings like this turned into boutiques in LA, the Bay, Seattle, and Portland. Marriott also expressed interest in Downtown Toledo for years, but tried to get a sweet deal from the city/county during the recession. Why didn't Toledo/Lucas County just give Marriott this hotel? Was Marriott even contacted about this building? They probably would have taken it since they like these 1970's type of high-rise hotels, particularly with the awesome riverfront views this hotel surely had. Marriott probably would have taken it and renovated it. Instead, the county wasted millions of dollars to buy it and tear it down. Disgusting. Something doesn't add up about this... *The county's asbestos argument is total bullshit. How many buildings in America have been abated of asbestos? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands? Are they going to tear down the Fibgerglas Tower next since it has asbestos? A lot of these mid-century skyscrapers in Toledo and other cities have asbestos. It's not a big deal. Hell, Toledo's own Owens Corning made the stuff and sold it around the world (which later led to their bankruptcy back in the 90's). Asbestos is in a ton of buildings from that era.

August 14, 20168 yr Author Follow-up article this week from the Blade about the Hotel Seagate: Inquiries prompt halt to Seagate demolition Possible buyers show interest By Mark Reiter | BLADE STAFF WRITER Published on Aug. 10, 2016 | Updated 7:57 a. m Lucas County officials have halted further demolition of the 19-story former Hotel Seagate after receiving inquiries about preserving the building’s concrete and steel frame for potential redevelopment. The building, which had been a vertical brownfield because of asbestos used in its construction in the late 1960s, was days away from a date with the wrecking ball this summer when the county received calls from prospective buyers, said Megan Vahey-Casiere, deputy Lucas County administrator. “We were about a week away from a getting a crane on the site to take the building down when private-sector companies, independent of one another, said, ‘If you can stop [the demolition], do it,’ ” she said. The building as it stands now, county officials said, could give developers a $6 million head start in construction costs and could be redeveloped as a hotel, housing, or retail. The property is near the redevelopment of buildings for ProMedica’s future downtown headquarters. MORE: http://www.toledoblade.com/Politics/2016/08/10/Inquiries-prompt-halt-to-Seagate-demolition.html

December 4, 20177 yr Hotel Seagate renovation builds hope for revival of downtown Toledo Tourism is a giant economic engine in Lucas County, generating $2 billion in business activity in 2015 and supporting 1 in every 11 jobs in the county. But a study conducted last year by the 22nd Century Committee said that engine could be much bigger — and having more than 600 committable hotel rooms would allow Toledo to be more competitive for convention business. “Basically, if you’ve got a group that needs 600 committable rooms and you have only 400, then you can’t fish in that pond,” said Tony Vetter, director of sales for Destination Toledo, the area’s tourism and convention bureau. December 4, 20177 yr I'm glad this is happening. This section of Downtown along Summit is finally coming back to life. Promedica HQ. The new Promenade Park. Renaissance Hotel w/ Brim House and The Heights. Tower on the Maumee (Fiberglas Tower) will be done soon. Barry's Bagels is open. City Egg is opening soon. Balance Pan-Asian is working on their location that will have a hydroponic farm where they grow their own produce. Fort Industry Square is supposed to be redeveloped. Seagate Center is redoing the Monroe st side of the building so it isn't a sheer blank wall facing Fifth Third Field. Lots of progress in the heart of downtown.
December 4, 20177 yr ^ Nice. That hotel reminds me of one they just demoed near the lakefront in Cleveland a few years back.

Key Hotel & Property Management LLC, which Lucas County chose in November 2017 to develop the 19-story hotel at 127 N. Summit St., withdrew from the $30 million project six weeks ago. Meanwhile, First Hospitality Group, Inc., which redeveloped the downtown Renaissance Hotel on Summit Street and owns 45 hotels in 10 states, has asked to take over the project. https://www.toledoblade.com/business/real-estate/2018/12/06/downtown-toledo-hotel-seagate-project-new-developer/stories/20181205129

December 11, 20186 yr I would be even more excited to have the people that did the Renaissance take over this project. I've never had a reason to stay in a room there yet as I live in Toledo... but we visit the hotel often to visit Brim House and The Heights which are both amazing additions to the downtown food/drink scene. The hotel is awesome with its Toledo theme. I hope when they renovate the Hotel Seagate that they can make the streetfront very inviting with a restaurant and/or bar and not just a brick wall pedestrians must trudge past. Lots of potential!
