May 27, 20214 yr https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/26/22455365/elon-musk-boring-company-las-vegas-test-lvcc-loop-teslas Quote Elon Musk’s Boring Company started shuttling passengers through the twin tunnels it built underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) this week, as part of a test to get the system ready for its full debut in June. Videos, images, and accounts shared around the internet by the people who showed up for the test offer the most coherent glimpse yet at Musk’s solution for traversing the LVCC campus. It is quite literally just Teslas being driven through two 0.8-mile tunnels — a far cry from the autonomous sled-and-shuttle ideas that Musk once proposed for The Boring Company. Quote In one video, one of the test riders said they had to wait about three to five minutes for a few of the rides, though even with a top speed of around 40 miles per hour, trips between stations appear to have taken about a minute to a minute-and-a-half. One of the things increasing that total travel time was the underground station. There were times when test riders pulled into the station only to run into some congestion. The drivers have to maneuver around other parked Teslas, people getting in and out, and cars queueing up to reenter the tunnels. It’s a tight fit. There was also just some general confusion as people got used to how the system worked. Passengers were being constantly reminded to leave the doors open when exiting the vehicle to speed up the transition to the next ride. One person got bonked on the head by one of the Model X’s Falcon Wing doors. Quote The company says it wants to eventually transport 4,400 people per hour through the LVCC Loop’s tunnels, though TechCrunch discovered documents late last year that seem to show it will only be able to transport 1,200. Beyond the LVCC Loop, The Boring Company wants to build a massive tunnel system that runs under the whole city, including the Las Vegas Strip and the airport. It claims this massively scaled-up version of its underground highway will be able to handle a little more than 50,000 passengers per hour. The Boring Company has claimed it plans to allow a max speed of 150 miles per hour in these tunnels but has limited speeds during the tests so far. And while the goal is to ultimately have the Teslas drive themselves, the system will rely on human drivers for the foreseeable future. Very Stable Genius

August 29, 20222 yr Author Several major developments are taking place near Las Vegas Blvd & Harmon Avenue, which has been a surprisingly underdeveloped area near the center of the strip. At the southwest corner, a vacant lot (former site of the failed Harmon Hotel tower) is being replaced by a new shopping center which will feature an Ocean Prime Restaurant from Columbus' own Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. At the southeast corner, it is rumored that a new luxury resort will replace a Travelodge, parking lot, and adjacent retail space. Just south of that, the former Hawaiian Marketplace shopping center has suddenly closed and is expected to either be redeveloped as more upscale shopping, or possibly incorporated into the previously mentioned new resort. Meanwhile, a little further south, New York Yew York is getting a minor remodel with some refreshed rooms and some small upgrades to casino and arcade areas.

I recently went to Birmingham, Alabama for work. I had about 4 weeks of notice to coordinate. So not super far in advance, but also not last minute. The cheapest room Downtown, which is the one I got, was $378/night. It was a fine room, but I was amazed there wasn't a single budget option Downtown. I discovered they were hosting the World Games, so I figured it was a fluke related to that. But then my team member also went down a month later for some additional scope and her room was over $400/night and it was just some random weekend. I keep looking for cheap weekend trips, but so far...that's no longer a thing. There are zero deals to be had. I wanted to do a Jersey Shore trips starting in Wildwood and stopping at all the amusement parks along the way, but there was nothing under $500/night actually on the Shore. It's insane.
August 29, 20222 yr I guess the hotels finally realized they have to pay people like their house keeping staff and desk clerks a real living wage if they want to keep them-especially given the current level of immigration-and guests are paying for it, which I guess is the way it is suppose to work economically.
August 29, 20222 yr Author The prevailing theory seems to be that there is so much pent-up demand for travel right now, hotels can charge whatever they want and guests will pay it.

The best part of working at a hotel has been and continues to be the company discounts on rooms.

May 12, 20232 yr A’s throw a curve, plan to build $1.5B ballpark at Tropicana site The Oakland Athletics have shifted their Las Vegas stadium plans, entering an agreement with Bally’s Corp. to build a $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat ballpark where the Tropicana Las Vegas now sits. The plan would bring yet more dramatic transformation to the Strip: The Tropicana, a relic of the 1950s, would be demolished to make way for a partially retractable roof stadium on nine of the site’s 35 acres, a person with knowledge of the arrangement told the Review-Journal Tuesday. In moving the ballpark site east, where it would be surrounded by megaresorts, the A’s are reducing the amount of public funding they want from the Nevada Legislature to $395 million. The Major League Baseball franchise was seeking $500 million in tax financing for a stadium on the former Wild Wild West site, at Tropicana Avenue and Dean Martin Drive, land the team last month had agreed to buy from Station Casinos parent company Red Rock Resorts. May 12, 20232 yr What is a "partially retractable roof". Does that mean it does not close all the way ever or just that a small portion of the dome opens? I would think that you would want a roof in LV not because of rain or snow (especially for a baseball stadium which plays in better weather) but because you want to cool it with air conditioning when it is miserably hot. Would defeat that purpose if open even partially. Maybe the goal is just to keep fans in shade when it is hot and forget the air conditioning.

COURTESY OF FONTAINEBLEAU LAS VEGAS Fontainebleau Las Vegas is officially open (other than many of the restaurants that are still under construction and the pool area which won't open until this spring). Based on some of the YouTube reviews I've seem, it looks really nice inside and definitely different than any other Las Vegas casino/resort. The weird thing about it architecturally is that it doesn't seem to have a proper "front". The view I see most frequently is the one above with the Fountainbleu name on the side, but that's a weird angle since the rest of the strip is behind you and there are no recognizable Las Vegas buildings in that shot. And the parking lot in the foreground is likely to be developed in the next few years anyway, blocking this view. I guess the expectation is that most guests will enter through le porte-cochère anyway, since there isn't exactly much else within easy walking distance. It does have the advantage of being the closest hotel to the convention center, but it's going to struggle based on its location, pretty far from the walkable center of the Las Vegas Strip. Word is that their hotel occupancy rate is still very low; they're spending a ton on advertising; and their SVP of Gaming has already been ousted as of a few days ago.

I am also seeing some rumors that the Tropicana location for the new ballpark is not as set in stone as they are leading people to believe. Given that the strip's two newest resorts are at the north end of the strip, and both are struggling mostly because of the location (not walkable to any other casinos or venues), it would make way more sense for the county to push for the ballpark to be built at the "Wynn West" site or the Las Vegas Festival Grounds. Not only are both of those sites currently vacant lots, meaning nothing notable will need to be demolished, but it would significantly help out Resorts World, Fontainebleau, and Sahara.

The renderings shown make the guitar out to be about 1/3 taller than the existing tower, which is 325' tall, placing it around 425-450' tall. But now it's known it'll be 660' tall, or almost exactly twice as tall as the existing tower, which is going to have a much more dramatic effect on the vibe of the strip when looking that direction.
