I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread focusing on companies that are based in Cleveland, but that many people do not know about.

Cleveland Browns and Indians!

I found this article on Cleveland.com

I assumed the metro area was included.

Here are some I just thought off.  This took me about 15 minutes.  I could also add the "weatherhead" list of Cleveland's hottest and upcoming businesses.

It's funny we have a lot of great company's.  most need "brand management".  I mean look what starbucks and home depot have done for their cities.

I'll add more as I think of more.

Yes but as of right now, they are still MBNA.

I'd like to add Alcoa.  They have a few divisions HQ'd here.  If this doesn't qualify...please delete

^their HQs are in Pittsburgh.

So from a corporate stand point, Ohio's shows well as a place to do business.  It's our lack of leadership and willingness to work together that is the problem.  IN ADDITION, WE DO NOT HAVE STATEWIDE PUBLIC AFFAIRS/COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY IN PLACE.  :x

You actually took a picture of the sign!  Somebody get Letterman on the phone!!!

You saw the word "vibrator" and wanted to check the place out for own personal benefit, right?  :wink2:

^ Haha...I know it's kind of Beavis and Butthead humor, but when I saw it I had to stop and get a pic taken.

good lord... look at the logo for it...

Two updates:  ISG unfortunately moved their headquarters in 2005 to Chicago when they were bought out by Mittal.

2.  Aleris is a new recruit to Metro Cleveland and is Fortune 1000 (somewhere around $2 bil annually now).  Check out more information at  http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=8051.0

I'm so pissed at myself.  I can't believe I left of my FAVORITE and the world's best Ice Cream...Pierre's Ice Cream!!!  I just got my monthly delivery and it reminded me that I didn't add them to my initial list!

^

I forgot about them! When you listed Pierre's, it reminded me that Ruggle's ice cream (and their damn jingle) are from Cleveland, and don't forget about Dairymen's.

Here is some info on a few of these companies.

OM Group:

Overview

Mmmmetals is the mantra for OM Group (OMG). The company produces metal-based specialty chemicals for about 30 industries, including aerospace, automotive, computer, construction, and consumer electronics. OMG produces base metal chemistry products such as organics, inorganics, powders, and metals (nickel, cobalt, and copper). It offers about 1,500 products to roughly 3,300 customers; about two-thirds of the company's sales are in Finland. The company more than doubled in size in 2001 when it acquired the precious metals and metals management unit of Degussa Metals Catalyst Cerdec (dmc2). The deal didn't work out as well as OMG had hoped, though; OMG has sold the unit to Belgian metals giant Umicore.

Company Type Public (NYSE: OMG)

2005 Sales (mil.) $1,249.6

1-Year Sales Growth (7.3%)

2005 Net Income (mil.) $36.7

1-Year Net Income Growth (71.5%)

2005 Employees 1,451

Cleveland Cliffs:

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest producer of iron ore pellets in North America. Cliffs sells the majority of its pellets to integrated steel companies in the United States and Canada.

The Company operates six iron ore mines located in Michigan, Minnesota and Eastern Canada that currently have the capacity to produce 37.7 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Based on its percentage ownership of the mines it operates, Cliffs' share of the rated pellet production capacity is currently 23.1 million tons annually, representing approximately 28 percent of the total North American annual pellet capacity. The Company sells its share of iron ore production to integrated steel producers, generally pursuant to term supply agreements with various price adjustment provisions.

The North American integrated steel industry is undergoing a restructuring process. This process is, in Cliffs' view, producing a stronger, more productive industry through consolidation and some rationalization of less efficient capacity. The iron ore industry is also restructuring to meet the challenging needs of its customers. It is Cliffs' goal to lead this consolidation process and to continue to improve the competitiveness of its operations.

Cleveland-Cliffs and its associated companies employ approximately 4,000 people at operations located in Michigan, Minnesota, Canada and corporate headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio.

Located at 1100 Superior (I think that is the Diamond Building).
