There wasn't an NKU sports thread, so I'm starting one.

NKU men's basketball won the Horizon league regular season championship in their second year in the league.

Are they really called NKU Norse? I lived in Cincinnati for a long time and I don't remember that. Admittedly, I don't even follow sports that closely but it just sounds like a weird name to me.

Yes. Their name and logo are very similar to the Cleveland State Vikings, whom they share a conference with.

NKU has only been D1 since 2012, so they're still building up their brand. Last year they won the Horizon tournament and played well against Kentucky in the first round of the tournament. This year they had a successful season and hosted UC's men's team. The BB&T is a really nice venue, especially for the Horizon league. They've set themselves up to have a solid program.

Wow. I'm sorry, I don't follow sports much unless it's a championship but the Norse play the Vikings. That's...pretty ridiculous. That's like the Cleveland Indians playing the Seattle Native Americans. The NCAA and those universities should do something about that.

NKU is division 1?! I didn't know that.

I actually kinda like the Norse name, it's unique. I wish they'd use something other than the horn helmet though, it looks so generic. Maybe a Norse longship instead?

I've already voiced my opinion about CSU's branding on a few other threads, but briefly- I think a rebrand to something like "University of Cleveland Clippers" would go a long way.

It is different and therefore, kind of cool. I just have to admit, my first reaction was, "why don't they just call themselves "Vikings" but you explained why.

Are there any other NKU fans on this forum?

I'm so for "University of Cleveland" but I'm very much against Clippers. How on earth did you come up with that? LA Clippers are a mediocre franchise and the Columbus Clippers are a minor league baseball team whose stadium is being turned into a race-track.

Ha, I didn't put much thought into it. It was meant as an ode to Commodore Perry. I also forgot about the Columbus Clippers.

Cleveland has such a rich history that I'm sure something interesting could be picked.

I'm all for an Ode to Commodore Perry. That's my absolute, all-time favorite beer.

Cleveland has more history, character and originality than it thinks.

I keep tabs on them and am proud that we have another D1 program in GCNKY.

Additionally, there’s Thomas More College who won 2 women’s NCAA D3 championships recently.

Thomas More will rebrand/reorganize as Thomas More University and move to NAIA later his year.
