Hitchcock Center to expand women’s services, add affordable housing in Glenville with new building

By Collin Cunningham ● Development, Health, Social Equity ● July 8, 2024

As the Hitchcock Center for Women prepares to round the century mark on its current brick-and-mortar treatment facility, the 46-year-old women’s recovery housing provider broke ground in late June on a 77,000-square-foot modernized addition. Once complete and open to low-income residents in 2025, the new building will offer over 50 single-family Section 8 housing units in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood and allow the residential addiction center to expand its services.

Section 8 housing along with women’s behavioral health and addiction treatment resources will be more modern and less scarce in Cleveland when the Hitchcock Center for Women (HCFW) cuts the ribbon on a new 77,000-square-foot building at its east side campus in 2025.

I can’t tell you how big of a deal the cleaning up of the National Acme site is. This is huge for the neighborhood, and I know that Mike Polensek began pushing for the cleaning of the site when his ward the ward he represents was expanded to include this part of Glenville. Without this funding, this site would have likely sat in the same shape for years to come as the cleanup costs were always very high.

Great news and thanks @KJP for getting this out there.

Glenville-Collinwood site may finally get new life
By Ken Prendergast / August 14, 2024

It’s a factory name that conjures thoughts from classic Road Runner cartoons. But few are laughing from the enduring health and economic burdens that the long-closed National Acme plant, 170 E. 131st St., is having on Cleveland’s East Glenville and Collinwood residents. Once one of Cleveland’s largest blue collar employers, its fate is similar to that of other aging industrial properties across the city.

My old man worked there right up until they sold to a Japanese concern and everything was dismantled.

There's an unwritten story on how Acme-Cleveland, a huge company with many divisions, (including Cleveland Twist Drill) just 'gave up.'

The Henn Mansion in Sims Park was the home of a founder.

Like many machine shops in the region (and likely the nation and world), we had a whole bunch of Acmes.   Built like tanks.   We had a major roof fire in their section of the plant, and most of them proceeded to run more parts once cleaned up.

It would be nice if the site could do likewise.

Yep. My dad worked at one in Dayton during World War II -- Acme Aluminum Alloy. BTW, right after the war, they were raided by the FBI because they may have sold industrial secrets to the Soviets.

CPC signed off on the City's  agreement with Bequest Builders for the sale of land bank properties in South Glenville. This would complete an initial agreement between the city and another developer that saw the completion of 6 homes. Bequest will finish homes on the remaining 20 lots at a pace of 5 homes per year. 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, dethatched garage. Moving target price of ~$330,000

That's actually a good price for new construction in Glenville these days. Look on redfin - something up.

Projects OK’d for affordable housing loan, credits
By Ken Prendergast / December 19, 2024

In Cleveland, one east-side housing development and one west-side development are set to receive 4-percent Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA). The agency announced that determination yesterday in a spreadsheet posted on its Web site. A third project won a $1.75 million OHFA loan, OHFA said in a written statement released today.

Is great news but even low-cost housing design can't escape the Geis-effect.  Wish they could moderate the repetitive features as it reminds us of a suburban extended stay hotel.

Treatment center to vacate St. Mary’s Seminary
By Ken Prendergast / January 10, 2023

It’s a place where few women wanted to go. And after their experiences at the Hitchcock Center for Women, many say they never wanted to leave. While each person tends to enter the center facing an abyss wrought by addiction, many leave feeling loved and hopeful. The Hitchock Center hopes their new home will be able to provide at least as much care as the old.

Still lots of renovations going on in addition to new homes; I did see one or two vacant houses with windows smashed in though. With this neighborhood's housing stock and location I expect it to become a very nice area with some more time.

My fiance' and I are looking for homes in the Glenville neighborhood and one area that is experiencing a lot of renovations is Columbia from 105th to the Cultural Gardens. Everytime we viewed a renovated home over there another one popped up.  Yale and Kempton have seen consistent renovations as well.

Hough Bakery plant site gets renewed interest
By Ken Prendergast / March 10, 2025

A Central Ohio developer is proposing a senior affordable housing complex across the street from the long-vacant Hough Bakery plant, which appears to be a part of renewed interest in redeveloping this area. The site, in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood is also across the street from East Cleveland’s Circle East District.

A shame I didn't realize the bakery also fell through. Whether knez proceeds with the Lakeview commons or someone else picks up the land i do hope the design language stays the same, felt perfectly at home in glenville.

Sadly, when little projects like these get revived someone suffering from a lobotomy seems to takeover the design work, they then throw out all previous work to shock us with some dreadful replacement.

I'm prepared to get all nostalgic over what could have been.

National Acme redevelopment site to expand

By Ken Prendergast / April 3, 2025

The fate of the National Acme plant at 170 E. 131st St., where Cleveland’s Glenville and Collinwood neighborhoods meet, is an all-too common story about the demise of a major employer-turned-abandoned factory. But community leaders today said they hope that the rebirth promised for this neglected, toxic site will also become a common story for Cleveland’s many problematic properties.

That's an old joke in the machining industry.  The plant may be long closed but the machines it built resembled tanks and there's thousands of them still making parts.   But it's still funny.

It's on the border of University Circle and Glenville on 118th street but does anyone know what development this is?

Has the design changed much in the interim?

The rendering looks nice I'm really digging it. The balconies remind of that old school cleveland look that's on the front of many pre-war apartments

yeah its a good upgrade that is a real gimmee for that block.

ya gotta love this:

“We’re trying to follow the spirit of the city’s new (Transit Oriented Development) zoning code by offering bike parking and vouchers for scooters and bus passes. We’re right on the Red Line (rail transit route) and you can walk to work, school, restaurants and shops,” he said. “At East 118th Street, we’ll also be offering an alternative transportation amenities package since not as many of our tenants are driving or have cars.”

Glenville, Hough, Ohio City housing wins big

By Ken Prendergast / May 21, 2025

Two new Cleveland housing construction projects and one renovation won coveted, highly competitive 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) from the Ohio Housing Finance Authority (OHFA) today. The awards promise a big financial boost to each of the projects which are located in the Glenville, Hough and Ohio City neighborhoods.

It's not sexy but these kind of new affordable housing developments are especially critical when it seems every new project is for top end rents. I'm all for gentrification but that can't be the only type of housing coming on board. The average wage-earner is rapidly being shut out.

Glenville Job-Ready Site more than doubles in size

By Ken Prendergast / June 3, 2025

Too much is never enough. When you’re marketing land to new end-users, you can’t have enough clean, developable land in the urban core. And one of the largest, if not the largest in the city of Cleveland has just been assembled by the Cuyahoga Land Bank. The site is located at 12610 Kirby Ave. in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood, bordering on Collinwood.
