Downtown Dayton getting renewed business interest

WEB-DowntownDayton04*280.jpg?v=1

Downtown Dayton is getting more suitors. Last year, 36 new businesses relocated or opened in downtown, and many of those are singing the praises of the district. Despite a still-high office vacancy rate, parking issues and perception problems, downtown Dayton may be poised for a business bump.

Of the 36 new businesses downtown, 15 were office users, leasing or buying up more than 53,000 square feet, according to the Downtown Dayton Partnership.

Dayton gets national shout out for immigration efforts

The city of Dayton has received national mention for its immigrant friendly stance.

In a Sunday article published in the New York Times, the city was held up as an example of Midwestern cities that are adopting immigrant friendly policies to attract new populations for economic revival.

The article noted in particular the Welcome Dayton plan organized by the city government and Mayor Gary Leitzell, as well as the revival of the Old North Dayton neighborhood thanks to the surge of Turkish immigrants redeveloping housing there.

Ailing Midwestern Cities Extend a Welcoming Hand to Immigrants

20131007_IMMIG-slide-4OXV-articleLarge.jpg

DAYTON, Ohio — Fighting back from the ravages of industrial decline, this city adopted a novel plan two years ago to revive its economy and its spirits: become a magnet for immigrants.

The Dayton City Commission voted to make the city “immigrant friendly,” with programs to attract newcomers and encourage those already here, as a way to help stem job losses and a drop in population.

In north Dayton — until recently a post-apocalyptic landscape of vacant, gutted houses — 400 Turkish families have moved in, many coming from other American cities. Now white picket fences, new roofs and freshly painted porches are signs of a brisk urban renewal led by the immigrants, one clapboard house at a time.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Loved that article, and I think the efforts Dayton is taking to welcome and encourage immigration is fantastic! The NYT just had to assert that little tone of east coast condescension with this line, though:

Other struggling cities are trying to restart growth by luring enterprising immigrants, both highly skilled workers and low-wage laborers. In the Midwest, similar initiatives have begun in Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Lansing, Mich., as well as Detroit, as it strives to rise out of bankruptcy.

And why the hell is Cincinnati not doing this...?

Immigrant initiative gets another national shout-out

Dayton’s efforts for immigration got another shout-out, this time from TIME Magazine.

Welcome Dayton, an initiative the city launched several years ago to be a more immigrant-friendly city, was featured in a June 5 piece for the national magazine. In it, TIME interviewed city officials and told the story of several immigrant groups, from the Ahiska Turkish community in Old North Dayton that I recently profiled, to business efforts of the Dayton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Bombs away -- for taxpayer-subsidized defense jobs in the Sun Belt, that is: Thomas Suddes

Amid last week's bread (organic, of course) and circuses (Republican, for now), came the 70th anniversary of the day in 1945 when Japan surrendered, ending World War II.

Seemingly forgotten is this fact: The United States is still at war in Asia — and has been more or less continuously since Pearl Harbor, as the American Century morphed into the New American Century. And that calls to mind another fact: War can be good for business — some businesses, anyway.
